here before you know it so that means getting
an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season.
Knowing the teams now will save you time in August
and Matt Fargo is here to help you get a grasp
of what to expect this upcoming year. We go from
worst to first in this 2006 College Football Preview.
Fargo’s Take
- TCU has won at least 10 games in three
of the last four seasons and the Horned Frogs
blew through the MWC last season, going 8-0 in
their first season in the conference. If not for
a letdown loss at SMU in the season’s second
game, TCU could have made a run at a BCS bowl
but still ended up winning against Iowa St. in
the Houston Bowl. Trying to match last season’s
record will be difficult but the pieces are in
place to make another sensational run. Five of
the Horned Frogs wins last season were by a touchdown
or less so winning the close games will once again
be the key to success. The defense was the rock
last year and the stop unit has the potential
to be even better this season. On offense, three
running backs capable of surpassing 1,000 yards
gives TCU a chance to be one of the best rushing
teams in the nation. Having one of the best kickers
in the country does not hurt either.
Returning Starters
on Offense – 7 The offense finished
22nd in scoring last season as quarterback Jeff
Ballard came in to replace an injured Tye Gunn
and went a perfect 8-0. His numbers were nothing
special but that was due to the fact he had a
running game that couldn’t be stopped. TCU
rushed for 220 or more yards in four of the eight
games Ballard started so throwing the ball wasn’t
even necessary. Ballard does lose his top wideout
as Cory Rodgers bolted early for the NFL but there
are potential playmakers to make up the loss.
The lingering question is along the offensive
line and how the Horned Frogs are going to find
replacements for four starters. The backs cannot
do it alone and if the line doesn’t jell
early, TCU might struggle. Even so, the defense
can carry this team as long as it needs so there
is no huge sense of urgency.
Returning Starters
on Defense – 6 The Horned Frogs finished
2005 ranked 25th in total defense and 15th in
scoring defense and come into this season with
even higher expectations. The defense has been
tabbed as the best heading into 2006 as the front
seven will once again be a force. Defensive ends
Tommy Blake and Chase Ortiz are two of the best
in the country as they combined for 16 sacks a
season ago. Finding replacements inside should
not be a problem as Lorenzo Jones and Cody Moore
should make quick impacts. The linebackers feature
five players who could all start. The weakness
lies in the secondary where both cornerbacks need
to be replaced along with the free safety. The
passing defense allowed big plays last year but
also picked off 26 passes. The defense was opportunistic,
leading the country with 40 takeaways.
Schedule
- The schedule is not a cakewalk but it wasn’t
last season either and the Horned Frogs had no
problem then. TCU starts the season playing at
an improved Baylor team before playing three straight
games at home. The first comes against UC Davis
followed by two challenges against Texas Tech
and BYU. The game of the year comes right after
the game against the Cougars as TCU travels to
Utah in what could be the deciding game for the
conference title even though it takes place at
the beginning of October. The remaining seven
games are all contests that the Horned Frogs should
win with the toughest of the bunch being a game
at Colorado St. If TCU can upset Texas Tech and
win on the road at Utah, an undefeated season
is in its grasp.
You can bet on…
If TCU had only known what that game against SMU
meant last season. It can run the table again
this year but the same amount of breaks needs
to go its way such as winning the close games
and winning the turnover battle as it did in 10
of its 12 games. The defense going up against
Texas Tech in the third game of the season will
be an interesting battle. The Horned Frogs have
not been very profitable when laying chalk on
the road as they are just 7-15-1 ATS in that spot
over the last seven years. They are giving a touchdown
at Baylor in the opener and they had better be
ready for the Bears who will be much improved
and who are implementing a new spread offense
this season. With UC Davis on deck, there will
be no look ahead and the loss to the Mustangs
last season only helps them here.
