Every week we will provide a Blitz
Package, which is our way of giving an overview
of the weeks upcoming games and our expectations
in a quick hitting preview. We’ll run down
the match-ups and give our insights on offensive
and defensive components to help you be the most
informed fan on the planet…in less than a
minute. We’ll dig deep into the war chest
and review plans of attack and expose team secrets
that could prove to be the difference between winning
and losing. Well last Sunday and Monday made for
a pretty crazy week in the NFL. The two teams at
31 and 32 of most power rankings with big wins over
top-half teams and no really closely contested matches
made for a poor week of fantasy stats and hurt my
pocketbook a little. Enough babbling on, the previews
are next.
Tennessee:
McNair is a pro and will bounce back trying
and exploit the Ravens through the air with
short passes. Henry/Brown won’t find
much room but if they continue to give the
rock Henry will score on a short run. Calico
and Bennett may not be factors but Troupe
could be dangerous in the short/medium middle
passing game and score. Defense has to tackle
better or Lewis will run amok and never
be stopped
Baltimore: Looked
very good for 3 quarters against Manning
but the offense made the Colts D look very
good. I don’t think they are and Wright
should find receivers open and Lewis should
have a huge game and score. Heap will have
a great week and should score maybe more
than once. Defensively what can you say
but Ouch! Even in a loss I am sure some
Colts players have bruises this week.
Buffalo: Looked dominant
in a win over the Texans last week but offensively
they were unspectacular kicking five field
goals. MacGahee was as advertised, punishing
and consistent but he didn’t explode
for any big gainers. Losman looked good, mobile
but he will need to keep improving for the
Bills to have post-season dreams. D was dynamite
and is good enough to be scary.
Tampa Bay: Chucky returns!!
Is Tampa that good or Minnesota that bad?
TB will find out this week as there are no
freebies against a menacing Buffalo D. We
will see if the Caddy has gas and is still
a dependable ride in week 2. Tampa’s
D surprised what was thought to be a good
Minnesota offense and that is something to
rally around. Bucs’ D is back?
Detroit: Harrington played
mistake free safe football. Williams and Rogers
totaled less than 50 yards and Pollard had
more and a score but look for Harrington to
get the ball to his explosive wideouts more
this week. Jones won’t find nearly as
much running room but should be a factor in
the short passing game. Lions D played well
stuffing Farve and Green and look for this
to continue against a weak Chicago offense.
Chicago: Played well in
a tight defensive battle. Expect more of the
same all year and Orton didn’t make
critical mistakes so look for a better performance
in the passing game with a TD pass this week.
Jones was unspectacular so expect a bigger
contribution from Benson this week. Defense
shut down Washington and almost beheaded Ramsey,
they will continue their aggressive pressuring
D against the Lions this week.
Jacksonville: Leftwich looked
in control last week and Jags showed flashes
of rookie sensation Matt Jones and he will
burn Indy down the middle early for a long
TD. Taylor should have a good game with 80+
and his first TD and be a factor in the short
pass game. J “too old” Smith should
have another great game. Jax D will be tested
but will push Indy around at the line of scrimmage
and could disrupt Manning just enough.
Indianapolis: Manning and
the Colts played great…for a quarter
and that is all it took. They need to do more
this week against a very solid conference
foe. The passing attack will be heavy dose
of Wayne and Clark with a sprinkle of Harrison
and 2 of them should score. Edge will find
little room but ran well last week and 80+
and a TD. Indy’s D looked great last
week but Jags are a much better offense in
the run and passing games.
Minnesota: Culpepper looked
awful against TB last week and this weeks
opponent looked good in their opener. Tice
and Culpepper need to get together and figure
out how they can get time and space with absolutely
no rushing attack. Last week raised more questions
than answers about the Vikes but the D was
solid and kept it close for awhile. Bizzarro
world…Vikings D kept them in the game?
Cincinnati: Lewis had to
be happy with his team’s solid effort
on both sides last week. The game was no as
close as the score would indicate and Palmer
looked pretty good but I want to see more
before I jump on his bandwagon. Rudi was great
rushing for 100+ and should again. Cincy’
D looked but did give up a big play and will
have stiff test as Culpepper will look to
exploit them through the air.
Patriots: Brady was quietly
great again picking apart defense and mixing
in Dillon’s 100+ yards. Branch and Givens
should have OK games but expect Dillon to
struggle until Brady finds the soft spots
in the defense then gain his 100 on the ground
and a TD. TE Watson scores and has 100 yards
in the soft middle of Panther D. Defensively
the Pats will try and stuff a solid Panther
run game but may be over-matched.
Carolina: Delhomme was stoic
and Smith was spectacular and repeat performances
are likely. If Panthers are to win this game
they need to run a lot with Davis and Foster
who could both have 100 yard games and each
score. Colbert will score this week after
a Smith big gainer. Defensively losing DT
Jenkins hurts, bad but Carolina has a solid
corners and will try blitzes and schemes to
pressure Brady and knock him around.
Houston: Carr had a rough
outing against a tough D but it gets no easier
this week. Davis will have to find some room
to run or through short passes and should
score. Johson had an awful week 1 but look
for him to bounce back with a great effort
and catch a TD pass. The Texans D was good
last week bending but not breaking and will
stuff Parker but must pressure the limited
mobility of injured QB Big Ben.
Pittsburgh: Dominant against
the Titans but will face a stiffer test from
the upstart Texans. Big Ben is walking wounded
and will need to pass early to open up lanes
for Parker or he will be hobbling away from
defenders all day. Parker may score but don’t
expect 100 yards and Ward will catch a TD.
Defensively the Steelers will look to emulate
Buffalo’s immaculate defensive performance
vs the Texans last week
San Francisco: Congrats
Coach Nolan. The Niners exploited the Rams
through the air but will need Barlow to step
up with a big effort or they will leave their
D on the field against a great offense too
much. Rattay needs to continue to find young
WRs Battle and Lloyd quickly. Defensively
the Niners held a good offense to 21 points…if
they do it again and Rattay can pull another
rabbit the Niners are 2-0…Not gonna
happen
Philadelphia: Owens wants
to win this one so bad he is silent? Bizarro
world part 2! After being held scoreless last
week he gains 150 and 2TDs. Westbrook may
not score but McNabb will go to him often
on dumps and short passes. The Eagles outmatch
the 49ers on D and should put up a solid line
with sacks and INTs with pressure and superior
talent.
