I love this time of year…games
on Saturday!! Now I am a worthless heap of <stuff>
both days of the weekend. Besides getting nothing
done and putting off my Christmas shopping another
day I can bypass the tragic congestion of a mall
on Saturday and visit later on Tuesday. See how
football makes life’s decisions easier and
my fantasy fanaticism requires the second by second
stat tracking online during fantasy playoffs! Here
are my thoughts on the games this weekend and how
you too can win your league and become legendary!
At least for the next nine months anyway. The Week 16 Previews are next...
Falcons: The DVD attack has
to get back to basics and help keep their
defense off the field. Vick has become a
more reliable fantasy option but the Falcons
have been losing those games so Falcons
fans may hope for the fantasy bust Vick
for the rest of the season. The playoffs
are not lost to the Falcons yet but they
need some help to get in. Expect Dunn and
Duckett to carry the load from here out,
Crumpler will contribute in the passing
game. The Falcons D must improve or a promising
start will end in disappointment for the
Falcons. Defense needs to establish the
Dline and stuff Caddy but that is easier
said than done.
Start: Dunn Duckett Crumpler Bench Vick
WR’s
Buccaneers: Simms has proven
an effective option for Gruden’s offense
when the Caddy suits up. Cadillac Williams
has been everything the Bucs could have
hoped for. A productive and reliable rushing
game has been the Bucs winning combination
on offense led by the rookie standout. Simms
has been able to find Galloway for big plays
when his team needs it and that has the
Bucs primed for the playoffs after a dismal
season last year. The defense plays an attacking
style and has found the secret to past successes
has the ability to dominate games. The Bucs
control their own destiny and expect them
to prove their place in the NFC elite
Start: Caddy Galloway Bench Simms Pittman
Cowboys: The Cowboys have fallen
short in big games this year and must win
out to have any chance at the playoffs but
they need help in any case. Bledsoe and the
offense had an off week against the Redskins
and the running game hasn’t been as
reliable or explosive as expected. Glenn has
been great when called upon but his number
doesn’t get called enough in key moments.
The Cowboys defense which looked to be their
strength early this season has struggled and
doesn’t apply any pressure to opposing
offenses and has few answers recently. They
need to find some quickly or the promise of
the playoffs will be a mid-season dream only.
Start: Bledsoe, Julius Witten Bench Glenn
Barber DST
Panthers: Playing superb football
since the defense started playing to potential.
DeShaun Foster has contributed some recently
but the MAN in Carolina is Steve Smith. He
is the everything wonder for the Cats and
is the most dangerous man on the field every
week. Delhomme has had a fair season but Smith
has bailed his QB out this season by scoring
from everywhere. The Julius Peppers led defense
has picked up their play since the midway
point, right after I dropped them I think.
The defense is the reason this team is leading
their division and is fighting for a first
round bye to rest and heal key players.
Start: Smith Foster Bench Delhomme DST
Bills: Holcomb has outplayed
rookie Losman and the Bills must wonder “what
could have been” if they had started
Holcomb all year. Instead of a meaningless
late December game against a terrific opponent
we would have had a battle between division
contenders. The Bills have to figure out their
offense for next year and find some help for
MacGahee who has delivered a solid effort
with little help from his teammates. The defense
was hit with key injuries but didn’t
deliver a consistent enough foundation for
a struggling offense to succeed. The Bills
will be up against a solid offense this week
and we will see how much fight is left in
the Bills.
Start: MacGahee Bench DST Evans QB
Bengals: A year ago this was
a mismatch the other way around. What a difference
a year makes where the Bengals have exploded
into the playoffs with a great season and
look to continue by running over the Bills
on Saturday. Rudi has emerged late in the
season and is carrying the Bengals while Chad
Johnson has been awesome and Housh has stepped
up to give Palmer legitimate threats on the
outside. This team is all about confidence
on offense and they will try to keep the Bills
defense off balance and on the field while
resting their own attacking D. The D has been
opportunistic and helped ease the burden on
Palmer by creating turnovers and field position.
A new world order and the Bengals want to
be part of it
Start: All Bengals should start Bench: none
Lions: Harrington is back in.
I am an ‘I told you so’ kinda
guy and I told you so. The QB is not the problem
in Detroit and the fans have targeted GM Millen
as their scapegoat since Millen fired Mooch.
The Lions Oline needs to step up and create
holes for the running game and protect their
QB much better or Joey may not even make it
through the season. Roy Williams has sparked
the offense but not enough to help the woeful
Lions win games late in the season. The defense
has softened the past few weeks after starting
the season strong and keeping the Lions close
in games. The Lions owe their fans a better
effort and we’ll see which players want
to prove to their fans next year will be different
Start: Roy Williams Bench Everyone else
Saints: Bouman has not come
in and ‘wowed’ Saints fans and
I wonder if we may see the draft pick MacPherson
in one of the next 2 games. Horn has been
virtually invisible since his return from
injury but Stallworth has stepped up his game
and shown some of his oustanding speed and
skills. ASmith and Stecker have filled in
as well as can be expected and the Saints
need to continue to play hard for Haslett
in the most difficult season ever faced by
a team and city. The defense has been inconsistent
but has shown signs of being able to make
plays and create turnovers for their offense
and will look to extend Joey’s painful
season this week
Start: Stallworth Bench Horn QB DST
Jags: Garrard has filled in
well for Leftwich who is trying to get back
in game shape for the final regular season
game. Look for Garrard to try and convince
coaches and teammates to rest Leftwich for
the playoff by having a great game this week.
He has made plays with his legs and to Jimmy
Smith who seems to get better with age. Taylor
has been on the shelf but Greg Jones has stepped
up nicely and gives the Jags a formidable
rushing tandem with size and speed. The defense
has been the backbone of the Jags this season
and the defense is playing its best football
late in the season when it is needed most.
Look for them to get after Carr and send Houston
home bruised and battered.
Start: Garrard Jones Smith DST Bench Taylor
Houston: Houston is in danger
of losing the race for the number one pick
but winning some games this season may help
save Capers job and some players to prove
their value to the organization. Andre Johnson,
David Carr and Dominik Davis should all be
safe as they have performed well under the
circumstances and lead the offense of the
Texans which is improving. Expect Carr to
continue to demonstrate his growth and poise
under fire getting the ball to Johnson and
making big plays. The defense has improved
with the offense unfortunately too little
too late to salvage this season but hoping
to inspire their fans to higher hopes next
season.
Start: Johnson Bench DST Carr Davis
Steelers: The Steelers are
in real danger of missing the playoffs and
will have to win out to remain in the race
for a playoff spot in the highly competitive
AFC. Big Ben has stoically fought through
injuries to try and help his team but the
running game has not been as productive recently
and the offense has gone south with it. Hines
Ward has stepped up and been brilliant lately
but the Steelers need the running game to
be successful and will have a stiff challenge
against a game Cleveland defense. The Steelers
have ridden their defense and will need the
aggressive unit to play mistake free football
the remainder of the season. Cowher will make
certain they do.
Start: Ward, Parker DST Bench Big Ben, Randle
El Miller
Browns: Frye has been very
good in relief of Dilfer and maybe Edwards
was right when he said Frye should be starting
earlier in the season. The young strong armed
QB has shown poise and the ability to make
plays. The WR’s Bryant and Northcutt
have been solid but will need to be good today
against the aggressive Steeler DB’s.
Droughns has been great in the backfield and
has carried the Browns offense all season
so expect him to continue to show well late
in the season. The Cleveland D has been much
better than anticipated and has the ability
to stop opponents but not create enough big
plays for an offense that struggles. Crennel
would love to finish the season strong and
taking the Steelers out of the playoff chase
would be a great start to next season.
Start: Droughns Bryant Bench DST Northcutt
Frye
Chargers: Brees and company
have endured some difficult losses but need
to win out or their fate is likely to fall
outside of the playoffs. Tomlinson has been
incredible this season but nagging injuries
have limited his effectiveness in recent games.
The Bolts need the superstar healthy and contributing
to make the push even with the chemistry of
Gates and Brees shredding other teams defenses.
McCardell has been solid and helped Brees
capitalize on defenses stacked to stuff LT
with his veteran savvy. The defense has been
solid against the run and will need to continue
against LJ and his seven straight 100 yard
games. AFC West showdown with playoff implications…
Start: Brees Gates Bench DST McCardell Parker
Chiefs: The Chiefs have to
win out and have some help to be a playoff
factor but they have the talent to make it
happen. Green has endured a difficult season
but has found his star TE Gonzo lately and
the Chiefs find success when Green finds Gonzo.
LJ has been amazing in relief of the Priest
this season and is dominating defenses but
will be challenged by the Bolts run D. The
defense has to play to their potential and
off season additions must prove their worth.
The defense has to be more consistent and
make more big plays if the Chiefs hope to
extend the season into the playoffs.
Start: LJ Green Gonzo Bench DST Parker Kennison
Giants: Eli and the Giants
can wrap up the East and end playoff hopes
with a win over division rivals Washington.
Barber has been the stud in New York this
season and has had an MVP type season. He
will look to match his performance earlier
this season against the Skins and open passing
lanes for Burress and Shockey who have also
contributed solid seasons supporting young
Eli. The Gmen have surprised on defense where
they have been active and created turnovers
led by Strahan and the defensive line backed
up by solid addition Pierce to the LB corps.
The Gmen will pressure try to stuff Portis
and create turnovers when Brunell tries to
throw the ball.
Start: Tiki Shockey Burress Bench Feely Eli
Redskins: Brunell exploded
against the Cowboys last week and made Cooley
a star by tossing 3 TDs to the versatile halfback.
Moss has been shadowed since his early season
breakout but is a dangerous open field weapon
as is Portis who has quietly put together
a solid season. Portis will look to improve
on his poor performance in the first meeting
between these teams and carry his team’s
playoff hopes on his back. The defense had
their best effort of the season last week
in a huge game and expect them to continue
to play at a high level with the playoffs
on the line. Stopping Tiki and applying pressure
to young Eli will be on Washington’s
wish list this Christmas.
Start: Portis Moss Brunell Bench DST Patten
