Denver: Plummer
and the Broncs have little to play for except
to stay sharp. However with 131 yards Tatum
Bell along with Mike Anderson, who won’t
play, will become the first tandem of backs
with 1000 yards since 1985. Shanahan will
give him every opportunity to get it as
he will limit Jake’s exposure to the
SD pass rush and grind up the clock. The
Broncs will want the line and running game
in top form in 2 weeks when they will play
their first playoff game and Jake has proven
effective and efficient when looking for
Smith or Lelie. The defense will have its
hands full with the Bolts explosive offense.
Look for them to try and contain Gates and
LT and pressure Brees into mistakes but
that is easier said than done.
Start: Bell,
Plummer, RSmith, Lelie - Bench:
DST
Chargers: Don’t
tell Marty this game doesn’t mean
anything. A win is a win and Brees LT and
Gates are winners who will play hard game
in and game out. Turner could be a bigger
factor if LT is hurting but San Diego won’t
lay down for Denver and will want to give
their coach and fans the best back-to-back
seasons in club history with a 10 win season.
Confidence for next year will be huge for
a young team and the Chargers are stacked
in all the right places. Playing in Denver
is always tough but Brees will be firing
to Vincent Jackson and McCardell to open
up and early lead and take the Broncs fans
out of it. Probowl rookie LB Shawne Merriman
and the defense will look to take out Jake
and the Denver running game with their ferocious
front seven. The defense has been rock solid
against the run and at getting to the QB
but they sometimes suffer in coverage keeping
games closer than Marty would like.
New York: Tiki
has been the heart and soul of the Giants
locking up a playoff spot with a week to spare.
Don’t expect the Giants to relax though,
its not Coughlin’s style. Eli, Plax
and Toomer will want to get the passing game
going and need extra effort without Shockey
who may be out with an injury. Eli needs to
play better on the road and this is an excellent
confidence builder for a potential road playoff
game for the young pivot. We could see 100
plus yards from each Burress, Toomer and Barber
if Eli can shake his road issues so expect
the Giants to be firing on all cylinders.
The Giants defense has been stellar and gotten
an awesome breakout season from DE’s
Umenyora and the predictable disruption Strahan
causes to opposing QB’s. The Giants
are a work in progress in the secondary but
are solid up front creating and taking advantage
of opportunities for big plays.
Oakland: The Raiders are
closing out what must be a disappointing season
to their fans who expected a fireworks show
every week with Collins to Moss/Porter and
Lamont Jordan tearing up defenses. The players
will be playing for their jobs next year because
no one is safe after a season like the Raiders
had so expect an inspired effort in the final
week. Jordan is again out and not a safe play.
No. 2 RB Zack Crockett, who gained 61 yards
on 15 carries against the Broncos, will start
again for the Raiders.
The Giants have some injuries to LB’s
and that could slow the pass rush leading
to opportunities off of play action which
Collins is very good at. Moss will want the
ball which isn’t always true giving
his new fans in Oakland a reason to come back
next year. Expect the Raider defense to give
a game effort in an effort to spoil the Gmen’s
New Years celebration. The Giants explosive
offense should keep them focused and the sack-monster
Burgess could wreak havoc with a little help
from his friends.
Seattle: The
Seattle Seahawks, conquerors of the Colts
last week and the winners of 12 straight games
overall, ride into the final week of the regular
season as the perceived superior among the
two teams boasting 13 wins and the nine others
with 10 or more victories. Former Penn State
wideout Bobby Engram has a team-high 64 catches
for 748 yards and three touchdowns, while
Joe Jurevicius has reached career highs with
nine touchdown catches and 683 yards receiving.
The offensive line has permitted just 23 sacks
- fourth fewest in the NFL - and the Seahawks'
plus-9 turnover ratio is good for third in
the NFC.
Start: Jurevicius - Bench:
Everyone Else
Green Bay: The Green Bay
Packers, seeking to end the nightmare of a
three-win season and suddenly in the early
stages of turmoil relating to the future of
quarterback Brett Favre, who made noise in
a recent interview by inferring that he felt
unwanted by the organization. Favre has too
often been forced into the role of all-everything
for the Packers in 2005, making up for the
loss of several running backs to season- ending
injuries and the absence of another legitimate
threat to stretch the defense along with wideout
Donald Driver (80 catches, 1,103 yards). This
game won't provide much, keep an eye on the
weather, throw in Favre if your desperate
and play Driver for sure. The Packers will
continue to flounder and be only too happy
to run for the bus.
Houston: Will
the texans win the "Reggie Bush Bowl?"
The individual most impacted by Sunday's matchup
between the Houston Texans and San Francisco
49ers doesn't figure to be anywhere in the
vicinity of Monster Park. Now if the Texans
win, there could be five teams with a 3-12
record vying for that coveted first pick in
the draft. Houston is actually favored in
this game despite being 0-7 on the road. Domanick
Davis (knee) is out and backup Jonathan Wells
(thigh) is considered questionable for Sunday.
The possible absence of both players means
that rookie Vernand Morency (101 rushing yards,
1 TD) could be in line for his first NFL start
against the 49ers.
Start: Morency, Johnson,
Carr - Bench: DST
San Francisco: San Francisco
comes off perhaps its most positive moment
of the 2005 season. The 49ers were 24-20 winners
in St. Louis, as rookie quarterback Alex Smith
engineered his first victory as an NFL starter.
The 49er defense is playing well and the running
game has looked strong even with out Barlow
(maybe stronger actually) but the passing
game? Well, they need something to work on
during the offseason. Four players notched
multiple receptions in the St. Louis game,
and oddly enough given the team's catch distribution
this season, none of those players was a running
back. McCadlley, Battle, Lloyd, and TE Terry
Jones are all sleeper candidates this week.
Tennessee:
Tennessee was handed a 24-10 loss by the Miami
Dolphins in south Florida last Saturday, and
look to bounce back this week led by the Billy
Volek to Drew Bennett connections once again.
(No wait Matt Mauck?? is the starter now)
Chris Brown is bothered with a sprained ankle
and only had seven carries for 18 yards last
week while Travis Henry ran 16 times for 65
yards. The Titans' Jeff Fisher is 13-9 versus
Jacksonville all-time, including the 33-14
road win over the Jaguars in the 1999 AFC
Championship. On the road at the end of a
bad season, the Titans could end up using
all three quarterbacks in this game so just
stay away from all Titans.
Start: Bennett - Bench:
Everyone Else
Jacksonville: The Jaguars
are eager to begin their first postseason
since 1999, but still have one final regular
season contest this week against the visiting
Tennessee Titans. The Jaguars won 31-28 when
they visited the Titans in week 11 but in
the five games since, the only two wins have
been against the visiting Texans and 49ers.
The Jaguars at home will play a much better
rush defense than the Titans can handle and
Brown is banged up and not running well here
anyway. With the Jaguars already locked into
their playoff seed, it is difficult to determine
exactly how long Del Rio will play his starters,
but the return of Leftwich could alter things
a bit.
Start: J. Smith, Wilford
- Bench: Taylor, Gerrard,
Leftwich
Chicago: With
a first-round bye already clinched, the Bears
will be playing for pride when they visit
the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The Bears
won 28-3 when the Vikings came to Chicago
in week six but this game has no meaning since
Chicago has clinched a bye, cannot get the
home field through out and the Vikings were
dropped from playoff contention last week
by the Ravens. The last time Grossman took
the field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome,
he left on a cart after suffering a torn right
ACL that knocked him out for the final 13
games of the 2004 season. He'll be looking
to go into the playoffs on a role here in
this game. Linebackers Urlacher (121 tackles)
and Lance Briggs (106 tackles, 2 sacks, 2
INT), who are 1-2 on the Bears in tackles
lead the best defense in football.
Start: DST - Bench:
Everyone Else
Minnesota: Both teams have
a chance to improve their showing within the
NFC North division. Minnesota is 8-7 (4-1
in the division), while the Bears sit at 11-4
(5-0 in the division). After a surprising
winning streak of six games, the Vikings have
now dropped their last two match-ups and end
the season with a chance to have a winning
record. At worst they'll be .500 and that
alone should be considered as a major success
for Mike Tice and the rest of the team. With
a win over the Bears this week, Minnesota
will have clinched just the second winning
season in Tice's four-year tenure. Though
he was unable to guide the Vikings to a much-needed
win on Christmas night, Minnesota quarterback
Brad Johnson (1638 passing yards, 10 TD, 4
INT) had one of his most efficient games of
the season.
Start: DST, Johnson, and
pick a WR - Bench: Everyone
Else
Buffalo: The
Bills are coming off a 37-27 victory in Cincinnati
last Saturday. The victory ended a five-game
losing streak for Buffalo and was the team's
first road win (1-6) of the season. It now
appears likely that Kelly Holcomb will take
the start and that J.P. Losman will sit this
game out. So IMO upgrade Moulds and Evans,
even though the Jets are fairly tough against
the pass, and soft vs the RUN. The Bills have
already handled the Jets once this year and
that was ten weeks ago when there were a lot
more Jets than there are now. Look for only
moderate numbers here from McGahee with a
chance of one score.
Start: Moulds, Evans - Bench:
Everyone Else
New York Jets: The Jets,
at 3-12, will finish last in the division
for the first time since 1996 when they went
1-15 under head coach Rich Kotite. Buffalo
(5-10) will finish fourth in the East. New
York played in the final Monday night game
on ABC this past week and was pounded by the
New England Patriots, 31-21. It was the ninth
loss in their last 10 games. After five starting
quarterbacks and the loss of Curtis Martin,
this team finally heads to the golf course
with a decent defense cloaked by a terrible
offense that has never had a chance at continuity
this season. Bollinger usually throws one
touchdown even though the yards are lacking,
so start Coles.
Arizona: McCown
has played well spelling Warner at times this
season and now gets the ‘resting’
version of the Indy defense. The Cards are
not resting and expect superb efforts from
all the Cards offensive stars…that’s
Boldin and Fitzgerald. The dynamic duo should
have a field day against a secondary that
is resting players and McCown should have
time with the Colt DL sitting a few players
as well. Arrington could be a factor with
his speed and the TE have started to become
a part of this offense. The Cards disappointed
fans this season but a win against Indy will
raise expectations for next year and there
are 16 teams in the same boat as them. The
defense will have fewer superstars on offense
to worry about and should show well against
the backups led by Adrian Wilson the leader
of this young aggressive D. Big plays on D
will help the Cards win this game.
Minnesota: So let the resting
begin. Ok so it began last week against the
Hawks who dominated the Colts second stringers
and kept it close when the first stringers
were in. A dangerous game the Colts are playing
but they are a very good veteran team and
Dungy’s crew should keep them sharp
regardless who plays or not. The Colts seem
to be giving up the last few games but it
mayy pay off if they have injuries in the
playoffs and this veteran group will adjust
any timing or intensity issues that may be
lost with the rested players. The defense
is a swarm of killer bees, fast and smallish
like the awesome defense Dungy built up in
TB that dominated the NFL for years. The Colts
are definitely the team to beat this season
and the rest should help the defense be fresh
in game one.
Start: Whoever is playing
- Bench: Manning, Stokely
