Last week was huge for a couple
teams making statements and stepping to the head
of the class for divisional races. Pittsburgh lost
to Cincy, Dallas lost to the Gmen, Atlanta was wiped
out by DeShaun Foster, I mean Carolina and the Bills
lost a backbreaker to Miami. Props to Foster who
showed his potential with a huge game last week
against a divisional opponent. This week those teams
that lost last week find themselves almost desperate
to win and stay in contention as we head into the
most meaningful point of the season…fantasy
playoffs. I meant, of course, divisional championships
and wild card races. It's Fantasy Playoffs time.
Leagues are slowly ending, players have been eliminated
or find themselves in the consolation fantasy brackets
(oh joy) and the time to WIN is now. Not next week
right? We're here before week 14 of the NFL season
to help you prepare for your week so that you could
perhaps become your league's fantasy champion! Here
you can view the predictions for each game. The
Week 14 NFL analysis and fantasy previews are next…
Patriots -
Brady has shown signs of weakness but the
Buffalo D maybe be what he needs to recharge.
The Pats were tied with the Bills only a
few weeks ago so expect them to be motivated
to thump a divisional opponent and eliminate
them from the race. It will be cold in Buffalo
and Dillon has been off lately with nagging
injuries so Brady’s passing numbers
could be down from his seasonal 300 yard
2 TD games. The Pats D has been ravaged
by injuries but is starting to get some
players back. Seymour and Bruschi’s
return has strengthened the unit and given
them a chance to win close games with their
defense again but not reliably so look for
the D to play MacGahee hard and try to pressure
young Losman. Start: Pats
Defense, Branch - Bench:
Brady, RBBC (Running Back By Committee)
Bills - The
Bills have been awful lately and suspending
your best receiver is not a smart retort
by a team that should be fighting for a
playoff spot not beginning a controversy
and attitude check on the star in Buffalo
the past decade. Losman has been less than
spectacular and you almost wonder if the
Bills are trying to decide whether they
need to draft another QB or not. He has
tunnel vision to Evans and makes poor decisions
with no positive results from his gunslinging.
The Bills O rests on MacGahee and 31 other
teams know it and stack the line when the
kid is in. The defense suffered a huge loss
but has played well except against the run.
If they can pressure Brady and force a few
turnovers Buffalo should win this one on
their turf in adverse conditions. Start: McGahee, Bills Defense
- Bench: Losman, Reed,
Moulds (Susp), Evans
Bucs - Simms
has played well but 10pts against NO? Time
to re-visit the offensive gameplan because
they will need more than 10 against the Panthers.
The Caddy must have near 30 touches for the
Bucs to have success so expect Gruden to get
the rookie involved early and often. His effectiveness
also determines the effectiveness of the play
action to Galloway so Caddy gets the ball
in a big divisional match up between the front
runners. The defense has been spotty but very
good when Caddy carries the ball so expect
this to be noticed by the Bucs braintrust
and keep the defense fresh by running against
the Panthers. The Bucs will have to stop Foster
who had a big game last week while containing
Steve Smith, not easy to do. Start:
Cadillac, Galloway, Tampa Defense
- Bench: Simms, Clayton,
ASmith
Panthers - Finally Coach
Fox listens to me and plays Foster. Not a
bad idea huh? 131 yards on 24 carries and
2 TD’s led to a huge day for Foster
who averaged nearly 7 yards per touch. Looks
like a big play back to me and even the formidable
Bucs will have trouble stopping the speedy
and elusive Foster. Speed and elusiveness
is Steve Smith’s game too and he is
too good to bench or I would suggest it. He
will make a play in some form while Delhomme
avoids the rush from the Bucs line. Colbert
could be a factor as he has been a forgotten
man in the offense. The defense has been terrific
lately but Peppers is not at 100 percent and
he leads this defense. Carolina is a solid
team and should be able to match the Bucs
O and put Simms under pressure to turn the
ball over. Start: Smith,
Foster, Carolina Defense Bench: Davis,
Delhomme
Browns - With
the loss of emerging stud Brylon Edwards last
week Dennis Northcutt moves back into the
starting lineup along with Antonio Bryant.
Frisman Jackson will be the third receiver,
and Joshua Cribbs and Brandon Rideau will
battle for the fourth spot. Crennel has no
plans to sign another receiver to the active
roster. Jacksonville blitzed and sacked Charlie
Frye five times in the second half last week.
The Browns expect the Bengals to copy that
strategy. They could use two tight ends and
a blocking back for max protection, but that
would mean sending out only two receivers
against the defense that leads the league
in interceptions. Defensively, the Browns
expect to see a lot of Rudi Johnson. Johnson
rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown against
the Browns in the opener Sept. 11. They won't
dare put an extra safety in the box because
they have too much respect for Bengals quarterback
Carson Palmer. RB Reuben Droughns has been
the most consistent part of the offense this
season. If he is slowed by his knee injury,
the Bengals will be able to tee off on QB
Charlie Frye. Start: Droughns,
Bryant (sleeper) - Bench: The
Rest
Bengals - Stat of the week
type stat - QB Carson Palmer is first in the
NFL with 26 touchdown passes, second in passer
rating (106.6) and second in passing yards
(3,149). WR Chad Johnson leads the AFC with
71 receptions and 1,139 receiving yards. What
if any kind of answers do the pathetic Browns
Defense have for the high flying Bengals?
We'll know Sunday. The Bengals see a Cleveland
defense that has found some comfort and familiarity
with its 3-4 scheme, much more than it had
in the season opener, a 27-13 Bengals victory
Sept. 11 at Cleveland. The Bengals will want
to again control the clock and strike early
and often with their high-powered offense.
The Bengals are focused on slowing down Browns
running back Reuben Droughns and forcing rookie
quarterback Charlie Frye to beat them with
the pass. It will be just the second NFL start
for Frye. The Bengals had the ball for 34:13
in the opener against the Browns. RB Rudi
Johnson (knee) is probable but did return
to practice Thursday. If I were a Rudi owner
I'd grab Perry if he's still available on
the WW this week and watch the pre game reports.
Start: Palmer, Johnson, R. Johnson, Bengals
Defense, Graham - Bench: Perry,
Houshmandzadeh, Washington, Henry
Indianapolis vs Jacksonville
- Week 14 Fantasy Preview
Colts - Dominant!
They are playing on a whole other level than
the rest of the NFL right now. Start all the
Colts but don’t expect huge numbers
against the Jags D. They will move the ball
on the ground and through the air. Unlike
the first meeting there will be more points
in this game so look for Edge Marvin and Clark
to score while Peyton to roll up 250+ yards.
The D is why the Colts are dominant, they
stop people and make big plays. Peyton doesn’t
have to score everytime he gets the ball and
that puts the Colts on another level. I think
they would be crazy to rest guys and not go
for 19-0 but only my opinion. An elite team
meets a solid divisional opponent who held
the vaunted offense to ten points in the first
meeting and in enemy territory. Colts will
have to be sharp but are the better team and
should slide to 13-0. Start: All Colts start! -
Bench: No one…ever
Jaguars - Garrard has filled
in nicely for Leftwich and has some ability
to tuck the ball and run which could curb
the pass rush from the Colts DE’s led
by Freeney. Taylor should be back but expect
him to split with Jones who has been solid
in Fred’s absence and one may reach
100. Matt Jones’ production has dropped
off with the injury to Leftwich but look for
the Jags to try and involve the talented former
QB in more ways in the coming weeks. Jimmy
Smith is always a factor and makes big plays
for his QB, expect a decent outing from him.
The Jags D has their hands full but this is
a great test for a dominant defense against
an unstoppable offense. They will need to
apply pressure to Manning and force turnovers
because the Colts will score on offense so
they need to create more offensive plays for
Garrard to keep up. Start: Garrard, M. Jones,
Taylor - Bench: Smith, Wilford
Rams - Fitzpatrick
has come in and played well for an Ivy League
arm but the kid is smart and can make the
throws. Holt, Bruce and Curtis shouldn’t
lose much production but Jackson is the guy
in this game who will rebound from sub-par
performances in the past couple of games.
The offense needs him to produce from the
backfield in the run and pass games so look
for a great performance against a vulnerable
Vikes D. The Rams D is another story however.
They can’t stop anyone and have to find
a way to assert some pressure and create turnovers.
The offense generally scores enough to win
but the defense hasn’t made big plays
when needed to contribute. Start Jackson
Holt Bench: St. Louis Defense,
Curtis
Vikings - 5
in a row and saving their playoff hopes but
by no means is this a team feared by the NFL
yet. Brad Johnson has added some consistency
to the QB position and has done a great job
limiting turnovers. Moore has been good and
Bennett fills in nicely from the backfield
while KRob is starting to make a name in Minnesota
with some good showings. Marcus Robinson is
steady but unreliable from a fantasy perspective.
The defense is what turned this thing around
for the Vikings and improved play from the
CB’s and defensive line has created
more turnovers and scores than any defense
over the past month. If they keep it up they
won’t be out of the divisional race.
Start: Vikings Defense, Brad Johnson,
KRob, Moore - Bench: Marcus
Robinson and Wiggins
Raiders - Marques
Tuiasosopo gets his second start of his career
and in time to save Turner’s job I think.
Tuiasosopo (I like saying it but hate typing
it) has a live arm and good mobility so watch
for some deep plays off scrambles and Jordan
to have more open lanes due to the elusiveness
of the QB. Moss should start to play better
now that the Raiders are officially playing
for nothing and Porter should continue to
see more balls and opportunities to make big
plays. The defense has played better but got
ripped against SD’s offense so expect
a better effort this week even with Warren
Sapp on the IR and Woodson still out. Start:
Moss, Jordan, Tuiasosopo, Raiders Defense
- Bench: Porter, Crockett,
Kerry Collins (drop him he’s done)
Jets - Bollinger
had a couple of bad weeks but has to show
enough to keep a spot on the team next year
and the floundering offense is wasting solid
play by the defense. Martin has been solid
and should find room against the Raiders depleted
line. Coles has to make plays for Bollinger
and McCariens needs to make plays like the
Jets though he could when they signed him.
Really the Jets offense is putrid and there
is no bright spot but Martin. The defensive
has been very good but the Raiders can score
on anyone and the Jets D must create more
to help Bollinger find a way to win. Start: Martin Bench:
Everyone else
Bears - 16.4
-- Averaging point total allowed by the Bears
since the start of last season, tops in the
NFL. The Steelers are second at 17.0. All
this means is the first team to score 6 points
on Sunday will win. QB Rex Grossman has been
promoted to No. 2 and says he's ready to play
and that his mobility is about where it was
before he suffered a fractured ankle on Aug.
12. Keep an eye on this sitch in C-Town. If
the rookie Orton continues to struggle throwing
the ball the Bears will try to Grossman in
there. The Bears have been able to run the
ball pretty well against some of the NFL's
best run defenses this season, getting 122
yards against the No. 2 Panthers and 118 against
the No. 8 Bucs, and they face another big
challenge this week against the Steelers,
who are No. 4 in rushing yards allowed. But,
especially with rookie QB Kyle Orton struggling
to make the passing game work, it's even more
important for the Bears to establish a strong
ground presence. There is no doubt that Orton
will be looking over his shoulder. Start:
Bears Defense Bench: Everyone
Else
Steelers -
Pick your poison on offense: Run against the
NFL's seventh-ranked run defense or try to
throw on a defense ranked No. 2 in yards and
fourth in sacks per pass? The Steelers want
to mix it up but believe they must have the
threat of a run in order for their play-action
to work. Defensively, they will try to swarm
Kyle Orton and force him into turnovers, which
they believe are their ticket to a victory.
WR Hines Ward has caught at least one pass
in 115 consecutive games, a team record. He
produced his third 100-yard game of the season
last Sunday and ranks second among AFC receivers
with nine TD catches. QB Ben Roethlisberger
is one of only three NFL passers with a rating
over 100, at 101.5. But he has not topped
100 since the fourth game of the season. Don't
expect these kinds of gawdy numbers from any
of the Steelers on Sunday. If you are in a
TD league you may want to start Jerome Bettis,
he'll be good for 40 yds and a score in a
matchup that will suit him just fine. Start:
Steelers Defense, Hines Ward, Jeff Reed -
Bench: Everyone Else
Texans: David
Carr has looked much better with his main
man Andre Johnson back and the offensive line
has conspicuously looked safe to pass behind.
Expect a high scoring game with big offensive
plays and Andre Johnson should be huge against
young smaller CB’s. Davis has been great
now that teams leave a safety deep more to
help out on Johnson and that line again seems
to make the holes they couldn’t earlier
in the year. Gaffney has stepped up and been
a nice second option for Carr and the defensive
has solidified as the offense rounded into
shape. These guys may save Capers job yet
and still get Reggie Bush. They need that
offensive line to keep gelling and playing
well but when this team is on they can beat
most teams and Carr and the Texans have. Start:
Davis, Carr, A. Johnson - Bench:
Houston Defense, Gaffney
Titans - McNair
may not play but either he or Volek will be
throwing a lot of effective play action because
Chris Brown and/or Travis Henry should have
decent days. Look for one of the TE’s
to have a big day and if Calico is healthy
he could see some big plays with Bennett drawing
double teams. A young WR could step in and
make an impact on third downs when the Titans
line up in a spread offense. The Titans D
is young and “Jeff Fischer” aggressive
so they can make big plays and while they
learn have a few big plays against them. If
either D steps up and contributes points that
will decide the game. Start:
C. Brown, McNair, Bennett - Bench:
Titans Defense and Kinney
