Sports Edge's NFL betting
preview of all 32 teams continues with the NFC
West's St. Louis Rams. St. Louis is 100:1 to win
the Super Bowl, 40:1 to win the NFC Championship,
and 10:1 to win the NFC West. The Rams were 6-10
last year.
Schedule
St. Louis’ 2006 opponents
had a record of 130-126 in 2005. That is tied
for the 6th easiest schedule in the NFC. The Rams
get their bye-week after Week 6.
St. Louis opens up
their season with a tough game at home against
Denver. The Broncos are 3.5 point favorites in
that contest. The Rams’ schedule before
the break is much easier than after, with winnable
games against San Francisco, Arizona, Detroit
and Green Bay.
Sports Edge Analysis
Quarterback, Marc Bulger
is one of the best in the NFC when he is on the
field. The problem is that he always seems to
miss some time during the year, and he is coming
off a shoulder injury. Bulger has not looked great
this pre-season, but there is no reason to get
concerned just yet.
The bright side for Bulger
is that his receiving core is both talented and
experienced. Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce. Kevin Curtis
and Shaun McDonald provide as much depth as any
team in the NFL. Bruce seems to be wearing down
some in his 13th season, so all four of these
guys will be needed during the year.
Running back, Steven Jackson
is ready for a breakout year in his third season.
Jackson has averaged 4.4 yards per carry in his
brief career, and now is the full-time guy with
Marshall Faulk in the broadcast booth. Tony Fisher
comes over from Green Bay to be the backup, but
the team needs Jackson ready and available for
all 16 games.
St. Louis’ offensive
line has two former first round tackles in Orlando
Pace and Alex Barron. Pace is still one of the
best in the NFL, while Barron can get to that
level if he continues to improve. The interior
of the line is nothing special, and they must
play better this year if they hope to be an above
average unit.
The Rams’ defense was
15th in the NFC in yards allowed last year, and
tied for last in points allowed. Those numbers
demanded major changes in the defensive personnel,
and that is exactly what the team has done.
The Rams’ defensive
line got the first makeover with tackles, La’Roi
Glover signed as a free agent, and Claude Wroten
drafted in the third round. If nose tackle, Jimmy
Kennedy can start playing up to his potential,
then the run defense should be much improved.
The Rams do have two good pass rushers in Leonard
Little and Tony Hargrove.
Will Witherspoon was a good,
and expensive, free agent acquisition from Carolina,
and he will start at middle linebacker. Pisa Tinoisamoa
will be on the weak-side and add even more speed
to the unit. The other side will be manned by
Brandon Chillar. Chillar is more comfortable on
the strong-side, and he is going to be expected
to make a lot of tackles.
The secondary was another
spot for massive change. Veteran safety, Corey
Chavous was signed as a free agent, as was cornerback
Fakhir Brown. Travis Fisher starts opposite Brown,
although Tye Hill was drafted in the first round
and will compete for time. Jerametrius Butler
is returning from an ACL injury, and he provides
corner depth.
Prediction
Coach Scott Linehan takes
over the reigns after spending last season as
offensive coordinator for Miami. While Linehan
does have a good offensive pedigree, it is going
to take the offense some time to learn his system,
and they are likely to take a half a step back
this year.
The defense has a lot of
interesting talent, but it will also take them
time to come together as a unit. That is what
happens when you have so many new players. St.
Louis is a team that is going in the right direction,
but they are looking at a 6-10 record this year,
and better things in 2007.
