NFL Betting Odds
Philadelphia is 25:1 to win
the Super Bowl and 12:1 to win the NFC Championship.
Their Over / Under win total is 8.5.
Schedule
Philadelphia’s 2006
opponents had a record of 133-123 in 2005. That
is the 4th hardest schedule in the NFC. The Eagles
get their bye-week after Week 8.
All NFL teams need
a good start, but no one more so than Philly.
The Eagles had confidence problems last year after
the Terrell Owens saga and the injury to Donovan
McNabb. Their first four games include home games
against the Giants and Green Bay, and road games
at Houston and San Francisco. It gets a lot harder
after that, but a 3-1 start would make things
much easier.
Sports Edge Analysis
Quarterback, Donovan McNabb
was limited to just nine games last year with
a sports hernia. McNabb is back at full strength
and ready to return to being the quarterback who
threw for 31 touchdowns versus just eight interceptions
in 2004. His quarterback rating that year was
an incredible 104.7.
Wide receiver, Terrell Owens
is an All-Pro on the field, and an All-Pro pain
in the rear off the field. Now that Owens is Bill
Parcells’ problem in Dallas, Reggie Brown
fills the number one receiver role. The number
two receiver spot is still up in the air, and
that means McNabb is sure to look to tight end
L.J. Smith even more.
The running game ranked 14th
in the NFC last year and that just does not cut
it. Part of the reason was injuries to Brian Westbrook,
the other part was a lack of confidence in the
run. Coach Andy Reid knows the team needs to utilize
the ground game if they hope to keep McNabb healthy
throughout the entire season.
Another key element for McNabb’s
health is the offensive line. They have a good
blend of youth and veterans, and they may be even
better next year when rookies Winston Justice
and Max Jean-Gilles have some snaps under their
belts. This looks to be a slightly above average
group, which would be helped a lot if the team
passes less.
Philadelphia’s defense
was 13th in the NFC in yards allowed last year,
and 13th in points allowed. That is markedly down
from 2004 when they were ranked 3rd and 1st respectively
in those categories.
The Eagles’ front four
is boosted by the addition of defensive end Darren
Howard. With Howard on one side and Jevon Kearse
on the other, quarterbacks can never feel safe.
The tackles also look good with Darwin Walker
and Mike Patterson starting, and first round pick,
Brodrick Bunkley subbing in.
The linebacker group is not
as strong as the line. Middle linebacker, Jeremiah
Trotter is always motivated and will continue
to rack up the tackles. Dhani Jones is only average
on the strong side and Matt McCoy is unproven
on the weak side.
The secondary should
be one of the best in the conference even if they
struggled last season. The emotional leaders are
the safety combination of Brian Dawkins and Michael
Lewis. The cornerbacks have depth and plenty of
big game experience.
Prediction
The NFC East is the most
balanced division in football. Not only could
any of the four teams conceivably come in first
place, each team has expectations that they can
go to the Super Bowl. Don’t forget that
the Eagles went to three straight NFC championship
games before falling to 6-10 last year.
As mentioned earlier, the
team must start off at least 3-1 as the schedule
gets tough quick. Even with a good start, there
is a good chance that they are mired at .500 for
the season. 8-8 is the prediction.
