NFL Betting Odds
The Giants are 20:1 to win
the Super Bowl, 10:1 to win the NFC Championship,
and 5:2 to win the NFC East.
Schedule
New York’s 2006 opponents
had a record of 139-117 in 2005. That is the hardest
schedule in the NFC. The Giants get their bye-week
after Week 3.
The first six games of the
Giants’ season is flat-out brutal. That
early span has Indianapolis and Washington at
home, and Philadelphia, Seattle, Atlanta and Dallas
on the road. New York will be lucky to be 3-3
at that point, but fortunately their schedule
does get easier in the final 10 contests.
Sports Edge Analysis
Quarterback, Eli Manning
enters his 3rd season, and he is developing his
own persona that is far different than his brother,
Peyton’s. The question is, are we going
to see the Manning who played very solid during
the regular season, or the guy who imploded against
Carolina in the playoffs? The answer to that question
will determine how far this team goes this year.
Running back Tiki Barber
had his best NFL season last year with 1,860 rushing
yards. Barber is 31 years-old though, and it is
unrealistic to expect that kind of production
again. Still, the drop-off should not be too significant.
The wide receiver core is
in good hands with receivers Plaxico Burress,
Amani Toomer, and Jeremy Shockey is also an elite
tight end. The big question here is whether Manning
and Burress are on the same page, and whether
Tim Carter or rookie Sinorice Moss can step in
as a starter if Toomer quickly deteriorates.
The Giants’ offensive
line returns all five starters, and that cohesiveness
alone means that they will play better as a unit.
Guard, Chris Snee may be the most talented player
on the line, as well as coach Tom Coughlin’s
son in law. Tackles, Luke Petitgout and Kareem
McKenzie also give some good comfort to Manning.
The Giants’ defense
was 14th in the NFC in yards allowed last year,
and 7th in points allowed. That is the kind of
“bend but don’t break” defense
that was successful for Bill Belichick and the
New England Patriots.
That being said, the Giants
know they must tighten things up defensively if
they want to make it to the Super Bowl. Their
run defense was more than adequate last year,
and should continue to be so now that LaVar Arrington
has joined Antonio Pierce in the linebacker group.
The alarming part of the
defense last year was the secondary. They were
15th in the NFC in passing yards allowed, an incredible
figure considering that they got a good pass rush
from defensive ends, Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora.
To shore up the secondary,
free agent dollars were spent on cornerback Sam
Madison and safety Will Demps. They join Corey
Webster and Gibril Wilson in what looks to be
a good mix on paper. Now all they have to do is
show it on the field.
Prediction
Coach Coughlin is a Bill
Parcells disciple like Belichick and many others.
That means Coughlin is a coach that prides himself
on team discipline and toughness. Unfortunately,
Coughlin has yet to have the Super Bowl success
of Parcels or Belichick.
The Giants went 11-5 last
year, but three of those losses were by just three
points. Normally, you would think there would
be improvement this year, especially with a developing
quarterback. With a schedule this tough though,
10-6 looks to be the most likely outcome.
