Sports Edge's football betting
preview of all 32 teams continues with the NFC
North's Green Bay Packers. Green Bay is 50:1 to
win the Super Bowl, 40:1 to win the NFC Championship,
and 8:1 to win the NFC North. That makes them
the solid underdog in the division.
Schedule
Green Bay’s 2006 opponents
had a record of 115-141 in 2005. That is the 2nd
easiest schedule in the NFC. The Packers get their
bye-week after Week 5.
Green Bay opens with two
home games against Chicago and New Orleans. That
is a good break for a team with a lot of young
players and a rookie head coach in Mike McCarthy.
The Packers have three night games this season
showing that Brett Favre still has some star power.
Hopefully, the team is playing well enough to
warrant that kind of national attention.
Sports Edge Analysis
Brett Favre comes back for
his 16th NFL season after mulling retirement.
The question is, should Packers’ fans be
grateful that Favre is gracing them with his presence,
or should they have sent him a gold watch to convince
him to retire? Another 29 interception season
will answer that question.
Favre’s passing prospects
are not helped much with Javon Walker being traded
to Denver. Donald Driver is more suited as a number
two receiver, but he is the top guy now. Robert
Ferguson was penciled in as the other starter,
but he is being pushed by rookie second rounder,
Greg Jennings.
Having an actual running
game will also take a lot of pressure off of Favre.
The team wants Ahman Green to be the featured
back, but that might not be possible with his
injured quad. Najeh Davenport and Samkon Gado
are the other two options, but there is a lot
of uncertainty right now.
While the skill positions
are worrisome, the offensive line is one step
beyond that. There are two veteran tackles in
Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher. The guards however,
will be rookies Tony Moll and Jason Spitz. Third
year pro, Scott Wells is the center. All in all,
this could be one of the worst groups in the NFL.
Green Bay’s defense
was 4th in the NFC in yards allowed last year,
and 9th in points allowed. A lot of the credit
for that has to go to departed defensive coordinator,
Jim Bates. Bates did not stay on after McCarthy
was hired as head coach. Instead, Bob Sanders
was promoted from within and he will stay with
Bates’ same defensive system.
The Packers have a couple
of guys who can rush the passer in Aaron Kampman
and Kabeer-Gbaja-Biamila. The big question is
whether they can stop the run, a big weakness
in 2005. Ryan Pickett was signed as a big free
agent to replace Grady Jackson, but that is a
downgrade from a run defense standpoint.
Green Bay drafted two linebackers
on the first day of this year’s draft. A.J.
Hawk will start immediately on the weak side,
while Abdul Hodge will back up Nick Barnett in
the middle. Ben Taylor will likely start on the
strong side, but Barnett could move over there
and have Hodge start.
The secondary made
a couple of free agent upgrades with cornerback
Charles Woodson and safety Marquand Manuel. They
join holdovers, Al Harris and Nick Collins in
what should be the strongest part of the defense.
Prediction
Favre was quoted as saying
this Packers’ team is the most talented
he has played on, even better than the Super Bowl
winning team of 1996. It sounds here like Favre
might have been drinking heavily before making
that statement, but we will give him the benefit
of the doubt and assume that he was making a larger
point.
That point is, there
is a lot of young, raw talent on this squad. When
they finally jell as a unit, this will be a team
to be reckoned with. That will not be this year
though, as there are too many new pieces to fit
together, especially with a new coaching staff.
Another 4-12 record is in the cards for 2006.
