Sports Edge's football betting
preview of all 32 teams continues with the NFC
South's Carolina Panthers. Carolina is 10:1 to
win the Super Bowl, 5:1 to win the NFC Championship,
and 4:6 to win the NFC South. The Panthers are
the heavy favorite in their division.
Schedule
Carolina’s 2006 opponents
had a record of 129-127 in 2005. That is right
in the middle of the pack in the NFC. The Panthers
get their bye-week after Week 8.
Carolina starts their
schedule off with a Week 1 home match-up against
Michael Vick and the Falcons. Carolina swept the
two-game series last year, so the Falcons are
sure to be looking for revenge. Overall, there
are not a lot of automatic wins on the schedule,
but there are no definite losses either.
Sports Edge Analysis
Quarterback, Jake Delhomme
is a gutsy, big game quarterback who normally
plays his best during crunch time. That is why
it was so strange that he turned into Kordell
Stewart in the NFC Championship game against Seattle.
Not much fazes this “Ragin Cajun”
though, and he is sure to do better the next time
he is put into that situation.
One factor that Delhomme
is sure to be smiling about is his wide receivers.
Steve Smith’s hamstring injury should not
effect his regular season and he may be the best
receiver in the NFL. Free agent acquisition, Keyshawn
Johnson is the prototypical number two possession
receiver. Drew Carter is fighting Keary Colbert
for the 3rd slot.
The running game has also
had a big addition with first round pick, DeAngelo
Williams. Williams is going to find the going
much tougher in the NFL versus Conference USA,
but all he is expected to do now is spell DeShaun
Foster. Foster is fully healed from last year’s
broken ankle.
The Panthers’ offensive
line has the potential to be very good. The tackles
are strong with Travelle Wharton and Jordan Gross.
Mike Wahle is a very expensive guard who can also
play tackle if necessary. Center Justin Hartwig
just got a big free agent deal to come over from
Tennessee.
Carolina’s defense
was 3rd in the NFC in yards allowed last year,
and 2nd in points allowed. That is incredible
considering that tackle, Kris Jenkins missed almost
the whole year with a knee injury. Jenkins is
back to plug the middle of the line along with
free agent pickup Ma’ake Kemoeatu. With
Julius Peppers and Mike Rucker on the outside,
this is one of the best units in the NFL.
At linebacker, Na’il
Diggs replaces Will Witherspoon who left for St.
Louis. That exchange was a net loss for Carolina.
Dan Morgan is still in the middle with Thomas
Davis on the outside, Overall, this is an average
unit that looks better due to the front four.
The secondary is another
strong group but one that lacks a lot of depth.
Shaun Williams was signed to play strong safety
next to Mike Minter. The corners are excellent
with Ken Lucas and Chris Gamble. Cornerback, Richard
Marshall was a great second round pick and he
could be pressed into action if one of the starters
gets hurt.
Prediction
Carolina went 11-5 in the
regular season last year, and then looked great
in road playoff wins against the Giants and Chicago.
They almost seemed destined for a win against
Seattle in the NFC Championship game, but it was
a 34-14 blowout loss.
Remember, this team went
to the Super Bowl in the 2003 season and almost
upset New England. A big part of that team still
exists as well as Coach John Fox. Carolina is
looking at an 11-5 regular season record and a
great shot for another Super Bowl appearance.
