Sports Edge's NFL betting
preview of all 32 teams continues with the NFC
South's New Orleans Saints. New Orleans is 75:1
to win the Super Bowl, 40:1 to win the NFC Championship,
and 12:1 to win the NFC South. The Saints were
3-13 last year.
Schedule
New Orleans’ 2006 opponents
had a record of 138-118 in 2005. That is tied
for the 2nd hardest schedule in the NFC. The Saints
get their bye-week after Week 6.
New Orleans opens up
with road games at Cleveland and Green Bay. That
doesn’t seem nice of the NFL’s scheduling
department considering their “home”
games last year were at San Antonio and Baton
Rouge. The good news is that all home games this
year are in New Orleans, even though there are
very few easy ones.
Sports Edge Analysis
Quarterback, Drew Brees comes
over after a good five year career with San Diego.
The Chargers had some concern about Brees’
shoulder, but the real reason he is gone is to
make room for former first round pick, Phillip
Rivers. It is safe to say that the Chargers’
loss is the Saints’ gain.
Brees had running back LaDainian
Tomlinson in San Diego and he has Reggie Bush
and Deuce McAllister here. Bush has been dazzling
so far in the pre-season and McAllister will be
a great compliment if his knee holds up.
The receiving group of Joe
Horn and Donte’ Stallworth are talented,
but don’t always play up to their level
due to injuries and inconsistency, The player
Brees will miss the most from San Diego is tight
end, Antonio Gates. Zach Hilton started to come
on last year, but he is no Gates.
New Orleans’ offensive
line is down two starters from last year, center
LeCharles Bentley and left tackle Wayne Gandy.
Former first round pick, Jamaal Brown will move
from right tackle to left and Jeff Faine was acquired
from Cleveland to play center. A couple of the
other positions are still being worked out, and
that needs to happen soon for cohesiveness.
New Orleans’ defense
was 8th in the NFC in yards allowed last year,
but 14th in points allowed. Coach Sean Payton
has an offensive pedigree, so a lot of the improvement
is left to defensive coordinator, Gary Gibbs.
Gibbs spent the last four years as linebackers
coach with Dallas.
The Saints defensive line
is led by pass rushers Will Smith and Charles
Grant. Smith had 8.5 sacks last year while Grant
had just 2.5. However, Grant averaged over 9 sacks
in his first three NFL years, so the talent is
there. Hollis Thomas was brought in to try to
improve an awful run defense.
The linebacker unit is still
in flux with different players being tried at
different positions. Albert Fincher, Scott Fujita,
Tommy Polley, Colby Bockwoldt, and the newly acquired
Scott Shanle are all in the mix.
The secondary needs
cornerback Mike McKenzie to play more consistent,
while Fred Thomas is on the other side. The safeties
have four or five guys competing for the two spots,
and there are really no standouts.
Prediction
The addition of Reggie Bush
and Drew Brees makes this team very exciting.
The Saints are also the feel good team after they
had to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Coach Sean Payton has a big
job ahead of him in his first year as Head Coach.
His offensive background plus the talent there
suggests that the offense will be well ahead of
the defense. Throw in a very hard schedule, and
it is hard to think of this team any better than
5-11.
