Jacksonville is 35:1 to
win the Super Bowl, 17:1 to win the AFC Championship,
and 4:1 to win the AFC South. Their Over / Under
win total is 9.
Schedule
Jacksonville’s 2006
opponents had a record of 125-131 in 2005. That
is tied for the 6th easiest in the AFC. The
Jaguars get their bye-week after Week 5.
The Jaguars’
schedule looks to be a lot tougher this year
than last. For starters, it won’t be as
easy to go 4-0 against Houston and Tennessee
this year and Indianapolis is always difficult
to play twice. The Jaguars first four games
are Dallas and Pittsburgh at home and Indianapolis
and Washington on the road. We will know a lot
more about this team after the first month.
Sports Edge Analysis
Quarterback, Byron Leftwich
is entering his fourth season in the league,
and is already playing at a pretty high level.
Now, all he has to do is find a way to stay
healthy for all 16 games. One thing for sure
is that his leadership ability is unquestioned.
Leftwich is going to have
to be at his best this year as he lost his top
receiver, Jimmy Smith, to retirement. Matt Jones
has the lead as the number one receiver, but
he is only one year removed from playing quarterback
in college. Reggie Williams and Ernest Wilford
will battle for the other starting spot.
The running game is also
on shaky ground right now as Fred Taylor is
banged up once again. That could mean more carries
for Greg Jones and rookie Maurice Drew. Jones
is a solid runner between the tackles and Drew
can be explosive, but the team is better off
with Taylor getting 250 carries.
The Jaguars’ offensive
line has a lot of moving parts, but it should
be an above average unit. Khalif Barnes is solid
at left tackle as is Chris Naeole at right guard.
Veteran tackles, Mike Williams and Stockar McDougle
are quality backups and give the line depth.
Jacksonville was 3rd in
the AFC in yards allowed last year and 4th in
points allowed. A lot of the credit goes to
their big defensive tackles in Marcus Stroud
and John Henderson. Teams are literally afraid
to run the ball up the middle against Jacksonville
and are forced to find other ways to attack
their defense.
Having Stroud and Henderson
occupying blockers allows Jacksonville’s
fast linebackers to roam free and make tackles.
Akin Ayodele was lost to Dallas via free agency,
and he is likely to be replaced by Pat Thomas.
The secondary welcomes
the addition of free agent cornerback Brian
Williams from Minnesota. He will start opposite
Rashean Mathis. They also get strong safety,
Donovin Darius back from injury, and that will
make teams wary about throwing over the middle.
When you look back at Jacksonville’s
2005 season, you have the success of their 12-4
regular season, and the embarrassment of their
28-3 playoff loss at New England. The reality
is that all teams struggle in New England in
January, especially the warm weather ones.
Jacksonville desperately
needs to win home field advantage in the playoffs
this year, at least for one round. The problem
is that their schedule will not allow another
12-4 campaign, and they will still have trouble
beating out Indianapolis for the division. The
Jaguars will remain in the playoff hunt with
a 10-6 record.
