Sports Edge's NFL betting
preview of all 32 teams continues with the NFC
West's Arizona Cardinals. Arizona is 35:1 to win
the Super Bowl, 18:1 to win the NFC Championship,
and 7:2 to win the NFC West. The Cardinals were
5-11 last year.
Schedule
Arizona’s 2006 opponents
had a record of 128-128 in 2005. That is in the
middle of the pack in the NFC. The Cardinals get
their bye-week after Week 8.
Arizona opens the season
with a home game against San Francisco. That is
as easy a draw as you can get, but it is still
not a guaranteed win. Things get much tougher
the next three weeks including road games at Seattle
and Atlanta, and a young team like this can not
afford to get into an early hole.
Sports Edge Analysis
Quarterback, Kurt Warner
is an above average NFL quarterback, when healthy.
Of course, Warner is always injured, which is
why they drafted USC’s Matt Leinart in the
first round. Leinart looked very good in his last
pre-season game, and he will likely be the starter
at some point soon.
Edgerrin James is one of
the best running backs in the NFL, and one of
the biggest free agent signings in the history
of the franchise. James ran for over 1,500 yards
the past two years, and he is always north of
four yards per carry. If Arizona gets close to
that kind of production from him, they will be
very happy.
The wide receiver tandem
of Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald are the
best one-two punch in the league. Together, they
combined for 205 catches and over 1,800 receiving
yards last year. Third receiver, Bryant Johnson
also gets a lot of playing time in their three-receiver
set.
Arizona’s running game
was by far the worst in the NFL last year, and
part of the blame goes to the offensive line.
Unfortunately, this year’s group has as
many question marks. The bright side is they have
some promising talent, but it won’t take
long before Edgerrin James is wishing he was back
in Indianapolis.
Arizona’s defense was
5th in the NFC in yards allowed last year, but
12th in points allowed. The yards allowed stat
is better than most people realize, and it shows
that there is some talent on this side of the
ball as well. Now, it needs to be maximized.
The Cardinals’ defensive
line has two veteran pass rushers in Chike Okeafor
and Bertrand Berry. They combined for 13.5 sacks
last year and Berry only played half the season.
At tackle, the team signed Kendrick Clancy to
play next to Darnell Dockett. Gabe Watson was
also drafted in the fourth round.
The linebacker unit has a
good strong-side player in Karlos Dansby, but
he has been hurt. As of now, Calvin Pace takes
his spot. Gerald Hayes has replaced James Darling
in the middle. Darling is competing with Orlando
Huff for time at the weak-side position. This
group is definitely a work in progress.
The cornerbacks are a combination
of Antrel Rolle and David Macklin. Rolle needs
to be healthy and productive in his second year
after being a high draft pick. Strong safety,
Adrian Wilson is one of the best in the game,
but Robert Griffith has lost at least a step on
the other side.
Prediction
The Cardinals are an interesting
team because they have amassed young talent on
both sides of the ball. When determining their
record, you have to guess how many games Kurt
Warner will play. He hasn’t played a full
season since 2001, so why start now?
The likely scenario is that
Warner plays 10 games and Leinart six. With their
offensive line, both quarterbacks will take a
beating. This is a team that is still a year away
from making the playoffs or even winning half
their games. The projected record is 7-9.
