Sports Edge's NFL betting
preview of all 32 teams continues with the NFC
West's San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco is 150:1
to win the Super Bowl, 75:1 to win the NFC Championship,
and 18:1 to win the NFC West. The 49ers were 4-12
last year.
Schedule
San Francisco’s 2006
opponents had a record of 122-134 in 2005. That
is tied for the 6th easiest schedule in the NFC.
The 49ers get their bye-week after Week 6.
The 49ers open their
season with a road game at Arizona. The Cardinals
are a hefty 7.5 point favorite in that game after
sweeping the two-game series last year. Despite
all that, San Francisco has a chance to make that
game interesting.
Sports Edge Analysis
Quarterback, Alex Smith had
a god-awful rookie year after being the number
one pick. Smith threw just one touchdown versus
11 interceptions, and his quarterback rating was
a paltry 40.8. Smith will be much more comfortable
in the offense this year, and should show moderate
improvement.
One positive note for Smith
is his better receiving targets. Tight end, Vernon
Davis was drafted with the sixth pick overall,
and he will be a very good player eventually.
Wide receiver, Antonio Bryant has the skills of
a number one receiver, and he has built a good
rapport with Smith. The number two receiver spot
is still weak with a banged-up Arnaz Battle.
The running back situation
is a lot clearer now that Kevan Barlow was traded
to the Jets. Frank Gore is the undisputed starter
and he has always had talent to spare. Gore gained
over 608 yards last year on just 127 carries.
The Miami product has twice had reconstructive
knee surgery, but it will only be a factor if
bad luck strikes again.
San Francisco’s offensive
line has gotten plenty of attention in the last
couple of off-seasons, but it is still a well
below average unit. Veteran, Larry Allen was signed
to play left guard, but he is slowing down. Left
tackle, Jonas Jennings is returning from a shoulder
injury. Center, Jeremy Newberry is out for the
year with another knee injury.
The 49ers’ defense
was 16th in the NFC in yards allowed last year,
and tied for last in points allowed. Well, at
least we can say they were consistent. Coach Mike
Nolan comes from a defensive background, so you
know that his top priority is getting the defense
back on track.
The 49ers’ defensive
line is led by Bryant Young, who is still very
productive entering his 13th year with the team.
San Francisco is likely to play a lot more 4-3,
as opposed to the 3-4 defense. That means Isaac
Sopoaga moves in at defensive tackle and joins
Young, Anthony Adams and Marques Douglas on the
line.
The 49ers lost their only
marquee linebacker when Julian Peterson departed
to Seattle in free agency. Manny Lawson was drafted
in the first round, and he joins holdovers, Derek
Smith, Brandon Moore, and Jeff Ulbrich. This could
develop into a solid unit, but it will take some
time.
The cornerbacks feature veteran
Walt Harris, and third year player, Shawntae Spencer.
Tony Parrish will start at one of the safety positions,
but he is still rounding into form after coming
off an injury. Mike Adams has the lead at free
safety, but he is being pushed by Mark Roman.
Prediction
The 49ers were 4-12 last
year, but two of those wins came at the end of
the season when St. Louis and Houston basically
gave up. Coach Nolan does a good job getting his
team to play hard, now the talent and system have
to be in place for them to start accumulating
more wins.
Norv Turner was named offensive
coordinator this year, and his reputation on that
side of the ball is impressive. Still, it will
take another year for this team to develop offensively,
while the defense will struggle once again as
well. Look for another 4-12 mark.
