Tennessee is 150:1 to win
the Super Bowl, 60:1 to win the AFC Championship,
and 20:1 to win the AFC South. Their Over /
Under win total is 5.5.
Schedule
Tennessee’s 2006
opponents had a record of 135-121 in 2005. That
is the 4th hardest in the AFC. The Titans get
their bye-week after Week 6.
Tennessee opens their season
at home against the Jets and the early line
has them favored by 2.5 points. The Titans better
win that game because their next five before
the bye-week could result in five losses. After
the bye, things do not get much better as the
Titans look to be favored in only a handful
of games all year.
Sports Edge Analysis
Tennessee lost their franchise
quarterback in Steve McNair to Baltimore, but
picked up Vince Young in the first round of
the NFL draft. Young is too green to start right
away, so the job falls to Billy Volek. Volek
is an underrated player, but he has never started
more than eight games in a season.
Volek will have plenty
of receiving options this year with the wide-out
tandem of David Givens and Drew Bennett, and
the tight end tandem of Ben Troupe and Erron
Kinney. Tennessee also has a lot of intriguing
young receivers who could emerge this year as
well.
The running back situation
is also interesting as they have three quality
candidates in Chris Brown, rookie LenDale White,
and veteran Travis Henry. Brown was looking
to be traded, but chances are he stays and splits
carries with the bruising White.
Unfortunately for Tennessee,
the offensive line does not have as much promise
as the skill positions. The aging Kevin Mawae
was signed to play center, and left tackle Michael
Roos makes the switch over from the right side.
Overall, this is a developing but below average
unit.
Tennessee’s defense
was 10th in the AFC in yards allowed last year
and 15th in points allowed. The Titans must
do a better job at stopping the run, and things
did not get any easier when defensive tackle
Rien Long was lost for the season. The injury
means more playing time for Randy Starks. The
good news is that there is a lot of talent at
defensive end led by Kyle Vanden Bosch.
The linebacker group should
be improved this year with David Thornton coming
over from Indianapolis to help out tackling
machine, Keith Bulluck.
The secondary should
also be improved with Chris Hope signed from
the Steelers to play free safety and cornerback
“Pacman” Jones graduating from his
rookie season. Reynaldo Hill mans the other
cornerback slot and he is also a second year
player.
Tennessee went 4-12 last
year, but they were just 2-12 if you exclude
the woeful Texans. This year, the schedule only
gets tougher and provides a stiff test for Coach
Jeff Fisher. Fisher is still one of the best
coaches in the league and a guy you want to
mold a young team together.
Overall, the offense
will put up their share of points, but the wins
will only start to come when this young defense
starts to jell. That process will continue this
year, but it will provide only a modest improvement
with a 5-11 record.
