Sports Edge's NFL betting
preview of all 32 teams continues with the NFC
West's Seattle Seahawks. Seattle is 9:1 to win
the Super Bowl, 5:1 to win the NFC Championship,
and 2:5 to win the NFC West. The Seahawks were
13-3 last year.
Schedule
Seattle’s 2006 opponents
had a record of 117-139 in 2005. That is tied
for the 3rd easiest schedule in the NFC. The Seahawks
get their bye-week after Week 4.
Seattle opens the season
as a 3.5 point road favorite over Detroit. That
shows that the public has a lot of faith that
Detroit will be much improved this year. Overall,
the schedule is very favorable with the toughest
games at Chicago, Denver, Kansas City and Tampa
Bay. Seattle will likely be favored in their other
12 contests.
Sports Edge Analysis
Quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck
is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFC, if
not the best. It would have been nice to see him
play better in their Super Bowl loss to Pittsburgh,
but he certainly did not play poorly. You can
count on another big season for the eight year
veteran.
Hasselbeck’s job is
made much easier by the presence of MVP running
back Shaun Alexander. Few people are expecting
Alexander to rush for 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns
again, but just having him in the backfield makes
opposing defenses respect the play-action-pass.
The starting receiver tandem
of Darrell Jackson and Nate Burleson also look
very good if they can stay healthy. Fortunately,
they have one of the best third receivers in the
NFL in Bobby Engram. Tight end, Jerramy Stevens
could miss the first month of action, so former
starter, Itula Mili will fill in.
Seattle’s offensive
line suffered a big blow when All-Pro guard, Steve
Hutchinson left for big free agent dollars to
Minnesota. Pork Chop Womack will step into his
big shoes and he will hold his own. Led by left
tackle, Walter Jones, the rest of the offensive
line is solid and has a lot of depth. This unit
will once again be a strength.
Seattle’s defense was
9th in the NFC in yards allowed last year, but
just 3rd in points allowed. Good defenses are
able to give up chunks of yardage, but stiffen
when the opposition gets in the red-zone. The
Seahawks hope to continue that trend this year.
The Seahawks’ defensive
line helped them finish second in the NFC in run
defense last year. They have a lot of depth at
the tackle position even though there are no big
stars. The defensive end combination of Grant
Wistrom and Bryce Fisher are solid, but unspectacular.
The linebackers are a group
to really get excited about. Middle linebacker,
Lofa Tatapu plays with a passion and energy that
few players can match. Julian Peterson was signed
as a high profile free agent from San Francisco,
and he should excel on the weak-side. Leroy Hill
is another second year player like Tatapu, and
he will only improve this year.
The secondary is the
worry spot of the defense. Safety, Ken Hamlin
is coming back after suffering a fractured skull
in a nightclub incident, and Michael Boulware
is coming off knee surgery. The cornerback slot
opposite Marcus Trufant is a battle between Kelly
Herndon and rookie Kelly Jennings.
Prediction
For anyone who wasn’t
paying attention to the rest of the article, the
Seahawks have a lot of talent. A very favorable
schedule almost guarantees another double digit
win season and a possible first round bye in the
playoffs.
The potential pitfall is
the “Super Bowl hangover”. The last
five teams to lose in the Super Bowl have not
even had a winning season the following year.
That will not happen again this year, but Seattle
will slightly underachieve and finish with an
11-5 mark.
