This is our waiver wire pick-ups
column. The WagerOnFootball.com staff will scour
the free agent pools in fantasy land for the best
available talent every week. Availability, of course,
depends on the league. We’re using 12 team,
15 roster spot leagues as the median, but we’ll
look for roster candidates for leagues of all shapes
and sizes. Grab the following before NFL Week 5.

WEEK
4 NFL FANTASY FOOTBALL WAIVER WIRE
Alex Smith
Waiver
Wire - QUARTERBACKS
Smith replaced
an ineffective Tim Rattay in the fourth quarter
of Sunday night's game against the Cardinals.
We'll see if this was just an opportunity
for Smith to see some game action, or a precursor
to a job change. He can certainly throw the
ball though that was evident in his short
time in there on Sunday night.
Josh McCown
We're leaving him up here one more week.
McCown completed 32-of-46 passes for a career-high
385 yards with two touchdowns in Sunday's
win over the 49ers. The 49ers' pass defense
didn't offer much in the way of resistance,
but to his credit McCown displayed poise in
helping his team bounce back from a rough
start for a comeback win. With Kurt Warner
iffy for Week 5, there's a good chance that
McCown will start against the Panthers and
another strong effort on his part would make
it hard for coach Dennis Green to send him
back to the bench.
Matt Schaub
Vick, who was knocked out of Sunday's game
against the Vikings with a sprained right
knee ligament, believes that the injury isn't
serious, the Associated Press reports. "The
way I feel and from what the doctors tell
me, I don't feel like it's serious,"
Vick said after the game.
Schaub completed 5-of-14 passes for 39 yards
and ran for 56 yards on four carries. After
taking the reins in the second quarter and
with a 21-0 lead, there wasn't much pressure
on Schaub to air it out. Keep an eye on Michael
Vick's status this week
Jarrett Payton
Waiver
Wire - RUNNING BACKS
Less meaningful to fantasy owners but far
more poignant was the debut of Jarrett Payton.
Yup, Walter's kid. Payton had 37 yards on
just four carries against Indianapolis, and
for the next three weeks (while RB Travis
Henry is suspended) all that separates Payton
from a leading role is an injury to papier-mache
RB Chris Brown.
Michael Pittman
Pittman gained 66 yards in 10 touches for
Tampa Bay on Sunday (46 yards in seven carries,
20 yards on three receptions).
The Bucs did get Pittman more involved in
their offense on Sunday, and he'll likely
put up more stat lines like this as he spells
Cadillac Williams occasionally during games.
Derreck Blaylock
Blaylock carried the ball twice for -2 yards
in Sunday's 13-3 loss to the Ravens. He was
used as a change of pace after Curtis Martin
was ineffective. With CMart playing much of
the second half with a sore leg, this could
partially explain his mediocre production.
Martin owners should consider adding Derrick
Blaylock as roster insurance
Peter Warrick
Waiver Wire - WIDE RECEIVERS
Matt Hasselbeck is chucking the ball all
over the field and that will continue on Sunday
in St.Louis in what should be a high scoring
game. I'm telling you to grab Warrick because
he'll be healthy this week and word is out
of Seattle he could get the start for Bobby
Engram who is most likely out with cracked
ribs.
Shaun McDonald
McDonald caught nine passes for 121 yards
during the Rams' Week 4 loss to the Giants.
With Issac Bruce out with turf toe McDonald
was moved up to the third receiver spot and
responded with a nice game. Keep him on your
fantasy radar as well.
Keary Colbert
Ok here is the deal. Here is what I would
of said about Colbert last week. "Colbert
is clearly not a major factor in Carolina's
offense and shouldn't be relied upon in fantasy
leagues until he shows some signs of life."
Folks, last night he showed some signs of
life. A horrible Packer D shut down Steve
Smith last night, and if this trend continues
which it very well could Colbert will see
more throws his way.

FANTASY FOOTBALL WAIVER WIRE
Bo Scaife
Waiver
Wire - TIGHT ENDS
I'm not saying ADD HIM. But I am saying put
him on your fantasy radar. Scaife, Ben Troupe,
and Erron Kinney combined to have 11 receptions
for 108 yards and a touchdown from the tight
end position. That's compared to only seven
receptions for 111 yards for the wide receivers.
Expect Scaife to get a respectable amount
of playing time this year.
Denver DST
Waiver
Wire - DST's
Just in case you have a bad D and Denver
might have slipped thru the cracks grab them
now. They are for real this year. The Broncos
defense held the Jaguars to just 12 yards
rushing and wreaked havoc with the passing
game as well despite playing without star
cornerback Champ Bailey, whose streak of 99
consecutive starts ended when he was inactive
with a hamstring injury. Their kick returns
and punt returns look decent as well.
Neil Rackers
Waiver
Wire - Kickers
GRAB HIM GRAB HIM GRAB HIM NOW!!!!!! Rackers
is fast becoming a fantasy star, and not just
for his booming 50-yarders. He does have a
rocking leg, but Rackers also is showing off
his consistency and he should keep getting
plenty of field-goal opportunities as long
as the run game stays in park.
