week 9 2006 power rankings
Each week during the heart
of the NFL season, and once or twice during
the NFL Preseason, we'll gather the troops around
the roundtable and hash out the NFL Power rankings.
We check out the stats, looks at the records,
and, most importantly, we take a close, close
look at the heart of each team. We encourage
you to come back each week and see how the NFL
Power Rankings have changed. NFL Power Rankings
will be updated by Wednesday every week. Be
sure to visit our home page for more articles
and NFL analysis. Its with this knowledge that
we can then deliver to you The
NFL Power Rankings!
With the NFL week 8 behind
us, it's time to check in with the Week 9 NFL
Power Rankings.

On Football's 2006 NFL Power Rankings |
This week's NFL Power rankings were determined
by a poll of WageronFootball staff -- writers
Q. Smyth, D. Bachman, and M. Pool. |
Neither the Chicago Bears nor the Indianapolis
Colts got tagged with a loss last week, so the
New England Patriots will have to be content with
the No. 3 position in this week's edition of the
NFL Power Rankings. Playing on Monday night against
the Minnesota Vikings the Pats knew their ceiling
going into the game, but Tom Brady and company
still were able to cruise to a 31-7 victory. This
week, however, New England will be able to shoot
for a higher ranking when they go head-to-head
with Indy in the Sunday nighter; a win over their
rival moves them up at least one spot.
If the Denver Broncos had won that game they'd
instead be behind only the Bears this week.
The New York Giants, who are coming off a win
over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are moving up
the charts, while the San Diego Chargers, Atlanta
Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints,
and Cincinnati Bengals are all making a case
for Top 10 status. Out of the Top 10 this week
are the Seattle Seahawks, who are coming off
a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Here is the Week 9 edition of the NFL Power
Rankings.

There's no truth to the
rumor they let some fans come down from
their seats to play in the second half on
Sunday.
2 |
Peyton
Manning threw for 345 yards and three scores
on Sunday, but Adam Vinatieri won the game
with his foot.
3 |
Flying under the radar with
the Colts still unbeaten, but they pounded
Minnesota on Monday for their sixth victory.
4 |
Eli Manning
went just 16-of-31 for 154 yards passing
on Sunday, but they still got past the Bucs
for the victory.
5 |
Huge game from LaDainian
Tomlinson carried them past the Rams: 183
yards on the ground, three touchdowns.
6 |
Came so
close to knocking off the Colts on Sunday,
but instead they find themselves behind
the Patriots as well.
7 |
All of a sudden Michael
Vick is on the It List again. Three more
touchdown passes against the Bengals Sunday.
8 |
Put up
28 points in the first half Sunday en route
to a 35-22 win over the Saints. Steve McNair
threw for two TDs.
9 |
Drew Brees threw for 383
yards and three touchdowns against the Ravens,
but he also threw three interceptions.
10 |
Fell behind
the Ravens in the division with their loss
to the Falcons last week. Need to win the
Sunday showdown.
11 |
Drew who? Tony Romo led
them to a victory over the Panthers on Sunday
night, with 270 yards passing and a TD.
12 |
David
Garrard against the Eagles: 10-of-17 for
87 yards passing. Somehow, though, it was
enough for them to win.
13 |
Seneca Wallace went 15-of-30
for 198 passing yards as a fill-in on Sunday,
with three scores and two interceptions.
14 |
Big game
for Larry Johnson against the Seahawks Sunday:
155 yards rushing on 39 carries, with three
touchdowns.
15 |
Jake Delhomme was ineffective
in their loss to the Cowboys, completing
just 17-of-31 pass attempts for 149 yards.
16 |
Beaten
badly by New England on Monday Night Football
- at home. That one won't go on the 2006
highlight video.
17 |
Donovan McNabb was held
to just 161 yards passing by the Jags, and
the Eagles' record fell to 4-4 on the year.
18 |
Kept pace
with the Seahawks in the division - by losing
as well. Marc Bulger threw for 327 yards
in the contest.
19 |
So much for the rise of
the Jets - Chad Pennington was simply awful
last week in their road loss to the Browns.
20 |
Brett
Favre only had to throw for 180 yards for
them to beat Arizona. Should be enough versus
Buffalo as well.
21 |
Well, at least they aren't
the only team to lose to Oakland this season,
but times are still pretty tough in Pittsburgh.
22 |
Vince
Young went just 7-of-15 for 87 yards and
a score in their win last week, but he did
pick up 44 rushing yards.
23 |
Need to get a win over the
Cowboys (at home) this weekend to turn around
their season. Coming off a bye week.
24 |
Couldn't
take advantage of a weak effort from Eli
Manning Sunday; scoring more than three
points would've helped.
25 |
Sage Rosenfels had a pair
of TD passes in the fourth quarter to get
within reach of the Titans, but they still
fell short.
26 |
Reuben
Droughns ran for 125 yards on 33 carries
against the Jets, and scored a TD. Play
at San Diego this week.
27 |
Had a bye last week, and
return to the field on Sunday to play the
Packers. Is time running out for J.P. Losman?
28 |
Don't
get too excited about the Raiders - starting
QB Andrew Walter went 5-of-14 for 51 yards
and an INT last week.
29 |
The Bears made them look
like a Canadian Football League team on
Sunday. And not even a good CFL team.
30 |
You guessed
it, the Lions were off last week too. The
schedule-makers should always keep the bad
teams idle.
31 |
They had a bye last week
as well, meaning the race for last place
in the AFC East experienced a dramatic pause.
32 |
Now own
the worst won-loss record in the entire
league, and they can rest on those laurels
during their bye week.
