NFL SPORTSBOOKS FANTASY
FOOTBALL MATCHUP OF THE WEEK
Fantasy Football owners will
welcome Lewis back with open arms after he missed two
games due to a league-imposed suspension. As coincidence
would have it, the monstrous back returns in time to face
the team he dominates, the Cleveland Browns, in a national
Sunday night contest. In his past five games against the
AFC North foe, Lewis has rushed for a combined 844 yards
with four TDs. That includes a 295-yard performance last
season that broke RB Corey Dillon's single-game rushing
mark. Ravens offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh will
lean on his workhorse in order to decrease the pressure
on QB Kyle Boller, who seems to have no reliable options
in the pass attack and needs more time in the pocket.
Expect Lewis to receive 25-30 carries and make an impact
in this important intra-division contest.
Kickoff: 8:30
p.m., M & T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, MD. Weather:
mostly clear, high 64, low 47. The Browns must
establish the run with RBs William Green and Lee Suggs,
but that's easier said than done versus LB Ray Lewis and
a formidable Ravens defense. Suggs' skills as a receiver
out of the backfield make him a better option for owners,
but he should be limited to flex positions. QB Jeff Garcia
will look to WR Andre Davis when allowed time in the pocket,
but CB Chris McAlister should hold the receiver to a modest
stat line. Ravens TE Todd Heap (ankle, questionable) is
not expected to return, so Boller will have limited resources
and should not warrant consideration as a starter.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Edward James
Dome, St. Louis, MO. Weather: dome.
Patriots QB Tom Brady could have a nice stat line against
a Rams defense that allows an average of 229.7 yards,
especially if Dillon (thigh, questionable) is unable to
start. WRs David Patten and David Givens (knee, questionable)
are nice options on the turf and will utilize their speed
to makes plays in the vertical passing game. Rams QB Marc
Bulger will have his full arsenal of offensive weapons
and take more chances downfield with CBs Ty Law (foot)
and Tyrone Poole on the sidelines. With a patchwork defensive
backfield, WRs Torry Holt and Issac Bruce are both nice
starters in all leagues.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m.,
Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park, NY. Weather: few showers,
wind, high 53, low 33. The winds could mean a
greater emphasis on the run in this contest, so expect
the Jets to lean on RB Curtis Martin. While he remains
a must-start, C-mart could fail to reach the 100-yard
mark against a formidable Bills defense. QB Chad Pennington
will find moderate success, but none of his wide receivers
have been consistent. WRs Santana Moss and Justin McCareins
are decent third options at best. Bills QB Drew Bledsoe
will see constant blitzes from New York's front seven,
so expect RB Willis McGahee to receive 20-25 carries to
alleviate some of the pressure. When allowed time in the
pocket, expect Bledsoe to find WR Eric Moulds downfield.
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m., Giants Stadium, East Rutherford,
NJ. Weather: sunny, high 69, low 53. Bears rookie
QB Craig Krenzel will make his second pro start, so expect
RB Anthony Thomas to serve as a prominent offensive weapon
in the absence of Thomas Jones (foot, doubtful). WR David
Terrell has two receptions in his past two games and has
been unproductive in five of seven overall. Giants QB
Kurt Warner hasn't throw for more than one touchdown in
any game this season and will continue to post modest
numbers against a Bears defense that allows an average
of one passing score per game. RB Tiki Barber will continue
to be the focal point of the offense, but expect coach
Tm Coughlin to also utilize TE Jeremy Shockey in the short-to-intermediate
pass attack.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Invesco Field, Denver, CO.
Weather: mostly sunny, high 64, low 41. Texans
QB David Carr won't be afraid to test the Broncos pass
defense, and will look for WR Andre Johnson against CB
Champ Bailey in the vertical pass attack. RB Domanick
Davis should find some success on the ground and be active
in leagues with 12-plus teams. Broncos QB Jake Plummer
threw for 499-yard and four touchdowns last week, and
should continue to produce at a high level against a Texans
defense that is tied for the third-most passing touchdowns
allowed (14) this season. The presence of RB Reuben Droughns
in the backfield will also create more chances downfield
for Plummer to find WRs Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Ford Field, Detroit, MI. Weather:
dome. Redskins QB Mark Brunell should find moderate
success against a Lions defense that allows an average
of 253.3 passing yards with 11 TDs. RB Clinton Portis
should receive 20-25 carries to create balance and better
chances for Brunell to utilize play action in the vertical
pass attack. WRs Laveranues Coles and Rod Gardner have
been inconsistent, but remain decent third receivers.
Lions QB Joey Harrington will receive little support from
RB Kevin Jones against a solid 'Skins run defense, so
expect him to use his cannon arm to make plays downfield
with WRs Roy Williams (ankle, questionable) and Az-Zahir
Hakim.
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m., Monster Park, San Francisco,
CA. Weather: mostly sunny, high 64, low 52. Seahawks
QB Matt Hasselbeck has been inconsistent and could be
without WR Darrell Jackson (ankle, doubtful), but he remains
a decent option against a 49ers defense that has surrendered
11 passing touchdowns. WR Koren Robinson could have a
nice performance, but RB Shaun Alexander will be the focal
point of the offense and should post his second consecutive
solid stat line. 49ers QB Tim Rattay will return to action
but needs the support of RB Kevan Barlow to have success
in the vertical passing game. WR Brandon Lloyd has improved
his numbers in recent weeks, but TE Eric Johnson remains
the team's first option.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Pro Player Stadium, Opa Locka,
FL. Weather: partly cloudy, high 82, low 66.
Dolphins QB Jay Fiedler will be under constant pressure
from a Cardinals front seven that has 15 sacks. When allowed
time to throw, he will look to WR Chris Chambers and TE
Randy McMichael often. LB Ronald McKinnon will limit the
production of RBs Sammy Morris and Travis Minor. Cardinals
QB Josh McCown should have support from RB Emmitt Smith,
who is a nice starter against a Dolphins defense that
allows 148.6 rushing yards per game. WRs Anquan Boldin
will have moderate success against a tough defensive backfield,
but still warrants consideration as a third receiver.
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m., Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego,
CA. Weather: showers, high 64, low 51. Saints
QB Aaron Brooks will look to utilize the experience of
WR Joe Horn, who should have a nice stat line against
second-year CB Quentin Jammer. RB Deuce McAllister should
see 20-25 carries, especially in potential wet conditions,
but his totals will be moderate against a solid Chargers
front seven that surrenders the fewest rushing yards per
game (81.5). The 'Bolts will lean on RB LaDainian Tomlinson
against a Saints defense that surrenders an average of
141.3 rushing yards. That success on the ground will create
chances for QB Drew Brees, who will look to WR Keenan
McCardell and TE Antonio Gates often in what has the potential
to be a high-scoring affair.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA.
Weather: partly cloudy, high 56, low 35. Eagles
QB Donovan McNabb should see fewer blitzes with RB Brian
Westbrook (rib, questionable) back on the field, which
will allow more time in the pocket to look downfield for
WR Terrell Owens, who has a TD in six of seven contests.
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger should have the support
of RB Duce Staley, who will be motivated to succeed against
his former team. The rookie signal-caller will look to
WR Plaxico Burress often against CB Lito Sheppard, who
is six inches shorter than the athletic receiver. WR Hines
Ward will also see looks into the intermediate and downfield
attack and is a must-start.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte,
NC. Weather: sunny, high 70, low 47. Raiders
QB Kerry Collins continues to make bad decisions in the
pocket and will have little success against a Panthers
defense that has surrendered a league-low four passing
TDs. WRs Jerry Porter and Ronald Curry are also not recommended
starters. RB Tyrone Wheatley returns to the top spot on
the depth chart and should find the end zone for the second
consecutive week. Panthers QB Jake Delhomme should post
a nice stat line against a Raiders defense that has surrendered
an average of 33.8 points in its past five contests and
could be without CB Charles Woodson (hip, doubtful). WRs
Muhsin Muhammad and Keary Colbert both warrant serious
consideration.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Paul Brown Stadium, Cincinnati,
OH. Weather: partly cloudy, high 61, low 34. The
Cowboys will look to establish the run with RB Eddie George,
who is a nice flex option against a Bengals defense that
surrenders a league-high 155.4 rushing yards per game.
QB Vinny Testaverde should have time to make his reads
and find WR Keyshawn Johnson and TE Jason Witten in the
pass attack. Bengals QB Carson Palmer warrants consideration
in leagues with 12-plus teams against a Cowboys defense
that has allowed the second-most passing TDs (15) in the
league. That should also mean a nice stat line from WR
Chad Johnson, who will abuse CB Terence Newman. RB Rudi
Johnson is also a nice option as a second back.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Raymond James Stadium, Tampa,
FL. Weather: sunny, high 79, low 58. The Chiefs
will emphasize the run with RB Priest Holmes, who has
found success against even the most formidable opponents.
QB Trent Green should have time in the pocket to make
his reads, but he won't have great success against a Buccaneers
defense that allows a league-low 148.6 passing yards.
However, TE Tony Gonzalez should continue to be a focal
point in the pass attack and is a nice starter. Buccaneers
QB Brian Griese warrants consideration in leagues with
12-plus teams, and will look to WR Michael Clayton downfield
often. With RB Mike Alstott (knee) out, expect Michael
Pittman to shoulder the load in the backfield.
