NFL SPORTSBOOKS FANTASY
FOOTBALL MATCHUP OF THE WEEK
DeShaun Foster,
RB, Carolina: The injured knee of RB Stephen
Davis puts Foster in the Fantasy Football spotlight this
week, and he couldn't have a more favorable opponent.
The Kansas City Chiefs had one of the most vulnerable
run defenses in the league last season, and it doesn't
appear that it has made strides to improve. The unit surrendered
202 rushing yards to the Denver Broncos in Week 1 -- including
a 156-yard, two-touchdown performance to 5-foot-7 RB Quentin
Griffin. Panthers offensive coordinator Dan Henning is
certain to exploit that weakness with Foster, whose prowess
as a quick and elusive back will enable him to make a
great impact. QB Jake Delhomme and the pass attack should
do enough to keep the Chiefs honest on defense, so expect
Foster to scamper through holes in the line of scrimmage.
Kansas City has allowed a 100-yard rusher in each of its
past five regular-season games, including 218 yards and
five touchdowns to RB Clinton Portis last December, so
expect Foster to thrive.
Foster and the ground game will open the pass for Delhomme,
who will look to WR Muhsin Muhammad more often with Steve
Smith out. Rookie Keary Colbert and veteran Ricky Proehl
will also be in the mix, but owners should start them
with caution. K John Kasay should have several chances
to produce and is a good option. The Chiefs will utilize
RB Priest Holmes, who should terrorize DE Mike Rucker
and the entire Panthers line. QB Trent Green should toss
at least one touchdown pass in the red zone, but Eddie
Kennison and Johnnie Morton should be reserved in leagues
with two wide receivers. TE Tony Gonzalez is a solid start
as usual, and K Lawrence Tynes warrants a spot in larger
formats.
Week
2 NFL Wager On Football - Sportsbook Review |
QB Jeff Garcia could be a decent starter in leagues with
12-plus teams against a Dallas unit that is without Darren
Woodson. Quincy Morgan and Andre Davis are both good sleeper
starters and should receive consideration as No. 3 or
4 options. RB Lee Suggs remains questionable with a neck
stinger, so William Green might get the call for the second
consecutive week. In either case, the Browns will find
it difficult to run on the 'Boys in their home opener
at Texas Stadium. QB Vinny Testaverde won't duplicate
his stellar Week 1 numbers against Cleveland's formidable
pass defense, but Keyshawn Johnson remains a nice option
in leagues with 12-plus teams. RB Eddie George will split
carries with rookie Julius Jones and even ReShard Lee
with Richie Anderson listed as questionable, so reserve
him if possible.
The Bears will look to win their first game of the season,
but it won't come against the Packers at Lambeau Field.
QB Rex Grossman was unimpressive in his season debut and
is not a good option, but David Terrell should produce
for the second consecutive game. RB Thomas Jones could
be held in check -- the Packers surrendered a mere 38
rushing yards to Carolina -- but he's still worth the
start as a No. 2 or flex option in leagues with 12-plus
teams. QB Brett Favre should find Javon Walker for a score
against a defensive backfield that could be without CB
R.W. McQuarters, who is questionable with a sore ankle.
RB Ahman Green dominated the Bears to the tune of 256
yards and three touchdowns on the ground in two games
last season, and should have a monster stat line. K Ryan
Longwell had great numbers against the Bears last season
and is a nice option.
QB Michael Vick got through an entire game in Week 1 without
setbacks, and should be active in all formats against
a Rams team with a questionable pass defense. WR Peerless
Price is a good start as a No. 2 or 3, but he's the only
Falcons receiver that warrants consideration in Fantasy
Football. Vick should look to TE Alge Crumpler in the
short and intermediate pass attack, and is a good start
after his impressive totals in the regular-season opener
at San Francisco. QB Marc Bulger will look to Isaac Bruce
and Torry Holt, who should dominate Kevin Mathis and Jason
Webster in the defensive backfield. Unless you've got
a solid No. 1 quarterback, Bulger is a good option. RB
Marshall Faulk still has the skills to produce solid numbers,
and should find the end zone for the first time this season.
This will be tabbed as the battle of the NFL's co-MVPs,
as Peyton Manning and Steve McNair battle in this important
AFC South contest. Manning, Edgerrin James and Marvin
Harrison aside, the Colts will look to get Reggie Wayne
and Dallas Clark involved in the offense. K Mike Vanderjagt
posted an incredible 32 points in two games against Tennessee
last season, so expect him to have a solid performance.
Indianapolis has some issues in its defensive backfield
with SS Michael Doss on the sidelines, so expect Derrick
Mason to have a solid stat line. McNair, who threw for
235 yards and two touchdowns in his last regular-season
home game against the Colts, is a great starter. RB Chris
Brown is questionable due to an injured ankle, so keep
tabs on his status this weekend. Backup RB Antowain Smith
will start if Brown is unable to suit up.
The Redskins should have a productive afternoon at the
Meadowlands against a Giants team with a less-than-stellar
defense. RB Clinton Portis will find instantsuccess against
New York's front seven, which will open the pass for Mark
Brunell, who is a decent No. 2 option. Laveranues Coles
and Rod Gardner are both good starts against Will Allen
and William Peterson, who were dominated by the Eagles
in Week 1. QB Kurt Warner should have some time in the
pocket to make his reads, but owners should start him
with extreme caution. RB Tiki Barber compiled 290 all-purpose
yards and two touchdowns in two games against the 'Skins
last season and is a good No. 2 option. WR Amani Toomer
has a difficult matchup against CB Shawn Springs, but
he remains a decent No. 2 or 3 in leagues with 12-plus
teams.
Weather will make this even more of a ground
battle between Jamal Lewis and the Steelers duo of Duce
Staley and Jerome Bettis. Staley could struggle against
LB Ray Lewis and the Ravens, but he's still a good flex
option. QB Tommy Maddox shouldnt be active in leagues
with 12-plus teams, and Plaxico Burress should be activated
with caution. RB Jamal Lewis had two 100-yard games against
the Steelers last season and remains a solid No. 1 option,
but Kyle Boller is too unproductive to start. TE Todd
Heap will be Boller's main receiver in the pass attack,
and Kevin Johnson has some value as a No. 3 with Travis
Taylor out with an injured groin.
This game should become a battle of the running backs,
with Kevan Barlow and Deuce McAllister at center stage.
Barlow was held in check in the season opener, but with
fullback Fred Beasley back from injury, Barlow should
rebound with a nice performance against New Orleans. The
Saints defense was exposed when RB Shaun Alexander posted
135 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, so expect
49ers offensive coordinator Ted Tollner to give Barlow
20-25 carries in the game. QB Ken Dorsey will start in
the absence of Tim Rattay, who will be the No. 2 due to
an injured shoulder. WR Cedrick Wilson and TE Eric Johnson
should be Dorsey's top favorites and warrant consideration.
QB Aaron Brooks will find success in the vertical attack
with Joe Horn and Donté Stallworth against a 49ers
defensive backfield that will be without CB Mike Rumph,
who is out with an injured groin. TE Boo Williams should
also have a productive game against a unit that was dominated
by Crumpler last week.
WR Andre Johnson should be the stud of this game against
a Lions defensive backfield that will be without CB Dré
Bly, who is out with an injured knee. QB David Carr should
improve his stat line and is worth a No. 2 spot in leagues
that require two quarterbacks. RB Domanick Davis should
find success against DT Dan Wilkinson and a Lions defense
that allowed two scores on the ground in Week 1. TE Billy
Miller has struggled and no longer warrants a prominent
role in Fantasy Football. QB Joey Harrington is also a
decent No. 2 option, but rookie Kevin Jones and Roy Williams
should shine against a Houston unit that surrendered 324
total yards and 27 points to the San Diego Chargers in
Week 1. K John Hanson should receive several chances to
produce and is a good start in leagues with 12-plus teams.
This game should be a battle in the trenches that will
produce few points and little production for Fantasy Football
teams. QB Jake Plummer will have few options in the pass
attack, as Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie struggle to find
openings in Jacksonville's defensive backfield. RB Quentin
Griffin remains a good start, but he won't post monstrous
totals on the ground against coach Jack Del Rio's team.
However, K Jason Elam should have eight to 12 points.
QB Byron Leftwich will also endure his share of problems
against CB Champ Bailey and a formidable Broncos defense
that allowed a mere 151 passing yards in Week 1. WR Jimmy
Smith remains a decent No. 3 receiver, but he could have
a long afternoon against Bailey, the top cover corner
in the NFL. RB Fred Taylor won't have a ton of yardage,
but he should find the end zone.
The Jets will build their offensive plans around RB Curtis
Martin, who was resurrected last week and should be active
as a No. 2 or 3. QB Chad Pennington will be the stud of
this contest as he picks apart Quentin Jammer and Sammy
Davis with downfield strikes to his talented wide receivers.
Veteran Santana Moss will have a productive afternoon,
and Justin McCareins should also be active as a No. 3
or 4. QB Drew Brees should have some success against the
Jets pass defense, but it's difficult to start him in
a week with no byes. RB LaDainian Tomlinson will continue
to be the centerpiece of the offense, but look for Brees
to find Antonio Gates and Eric Parker when the 'Bolts
throw the ball. Rookie K Nate Kaeding is a good sleeper
starter after his nine-point performance in Week 1.
QB Drew Bledsoe had a decent start to the regular season,
but he could be on the verge of a long afternoon in Oakland.
WR Eric Moulds will be Bledsoe's lone reliable option
as Josh Reed and Lee Evans are held in check. RB Travis
Henry will look to avoid run-stopper NT Ted Washington
and DE Warren Sapp, but the former Tennessee star still
warrants a No. 2 spot on Fantasy Football teams. QB Rich
Gannon was effective in his return from an injured shoulder,
but he'll feel the pressure from Buffalo in the form of
DE Aaron Schobel. RB Tyrone Wheatley, who had a 24-yard
effort last weekend, will have a difficult time against
a formidable Bills defense that held Taylor to 61 yards
in Week 1. WR Jerry Rice seems to be phased out of the
offense, so look for Jerry Porter and Doug Gabriel to
be used in prominent fashion.
We don't buy the heat being a a factor in this game for
the Seahawks, while they aren't used to close to 90-degree
conditions for practicing in Seattle, they did see plenty
of that heat at training camp in Eastern Washington three
weeks ago. QB Matt Hasselbeck could be the main catalyst
in the offense should Shaun Alexander's injured knee keep
him off the field. Alexander looks like he'll be a gametime
decision after practicing on Friday. Backup RB Maurice
Morris will get the call if Alexander is out, and should
be a decent flex option in leagues with 12-plus teams.
WR Koren Robinson has a problem with dropped passes, but
teammate Darrell Jackson should remain active in most
formats. QB Brad Johnson will feel the pressure from the
Seahawks, who will look to rattle the veteran and his
patchwork wide receivers. Rookie WR Michael Clayton is
a decent sleeper starter for owners with little depth
at the position, as is veteran Tim Brown. RB Charlie Garner
had a poor debut with the Buccaneers, and should be started
with caution.
The heat will swelter at Sun Devil Stadium, where the
Patriots look to improve their record to 2-0 against the
Arizona Cardinals. QB Tom Brady will have great pass protection
from his line, which should allow him time to make his
reads and find Deion Branch and David Givens downfield.
RB Corey Dillon should surpass the 100-yard mark against
the Cardinals defense, which surrendered 176 yards on
the ground in a loss to St. Louis. QB Josh McCown will
be pressured all afternoon and will receive little support
for the veteran Emmitt Smith and the running game. When
he does have some room to breathe, the field general will
look to rookie WR Larry Fitzgerald on a regular basis.
TE Freddie Jones will also get his share of chances and
is a decent option in leagues with 12-plus teams.
There could be a lot of turnovers in this battle of winless
teams, but the running backs should make the biggest impact.
RB Lamar Gordon will start his first game as a member
of the Miami Dolphins and is a nice No. 3 back or flex
option against a questionable Bengals defense that surrendered
a league-high 219 yards on the ground in Week 1. QB A.J.
Feeley will look to TE Randy McMichael, who became his
first option in the season opener. The 'Fins have to get
WR Chris Chambers more involved and will look to utilize
his speed to stretch the field. QB Carson Palmer will
have a difficult time against the Dolphins defense, which
allowed a mere 73 yards to McNair and will pressure the
field general all night. WR Chad Johnson remains a good
start even against Sam Madison, and Rudi Johnson should
thrive against a line that will be without DT Tim Bowens.
RB Onterrio Smith will find holes in the line of scrimmage
against a questionable Eagles line that is a little nicked
up and vulnerable to the run, especially with DT Paul
Grasmanis expected to miss the game. Smith's presence
will create opportunities for QB Daunte Culpepper, who
should look to Randy Moss in the vertical pass attack.
Nate Burleson and Marcus Robinson should also be in the
mix, but owners should start them with caution. QB Donovan
McNabb should ace the Vikings pass defense, which gave
up 355 yards and one touchdown to Vinny Testaverde, a
40-year-old quarterback. The absence of OG Shawn Andrews
will hurt the line, but the versatile Brian Westbrook
is still a good starter in leagues with 12-plus teams.
WR Terrell Owens will look to prove he's the best receiver
on the field, so expect him to burn CB Antoine Winfield
for a touchdown. TE L.J. Smith, who will play a role in
the intermediate attack, is also a nice option.
