NFL SPORTSBOOKS FANTASY
FOOTBALL MATCHUP OF THE WEEK
Kickoff: 1 p.m. Gillette
Stadium, Foxboro, Mass.
Weather: Partly cloudy, high: 44, low: 35.
Bengals QB Carson Palmer won't have a great
level of success vs. the Patriots, who have surrendered
12.6 points per game at home. Against one of the game's
best defenses, the Baltimore Ravens, Palmer was 29-of-36
for a career-high 382 yards and three touchdowns, this
week? Don’t bet on it. RB Rudi Johnson is a decent
flex option, but don't expect much as the New England
front seven limits the run. WR Chad Johnson has been on
fire in recent weeks and should remain active, and T.J.
Houshmandzadeh remains a nice third option vs. a defensive
backfield that is without CB Ty Law (knee, out) and could
miss CB Tyrone Poole (knee, doubtful). The effectiveness
of Dillon and the run will create play-action opportunities
for QB Tom Brady, who should find WRs Deion Branch and
David Patten in the vertical pass attack. Expect Dillon
to be his best and both teams to be highly competitive
on Sunday. Bench TE Daniel Graham - Suffering from some
nagging injuries. Find alternatives this week.
Revenge is defined
at Merriam-Webster Online as "to avenge (as oneself)
usually by retaliating in kind or degree." In Week
14, the definition should be accompanied with a picture
of Dillon. The veteran back has rushed for 98-plus yards
with eight touchdowns in his past seven starts, and will
look to add to those incredible statistics against the
team traded him in the offseason -- the Cincinnati Bengals.
Marvin Lewis' team has been more competitive in recent
weeks, but the defense continues to resemble Swiss cheese.
It has surrendered 75 combined points in the past two
weeks, and opponents have run for the second-most yards
(141.9) per game in the league. Patriots offensive coordinator
Charlie Weis is certain to attack this weakness with 20-25
carries to Dillon, who will be the most motivated athlete
on the Gillette Stadium field and should produce his eighth
100-yard performance of the season.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Hubert H. Humphrey Dome, Minneapolis.
Weather: Dome.
This contest will be a shootout -- the Vikings rank 26th
in total defense and Seattle has allowed a combined 81
points in the past two weeks -- so all starters have some
level of value. RB Shaun Alexander has rushed for an average
of 124.8 yards with six TDs in his past six starts. QB
Matt Hasselbeck should produce his second consecutive
nice stat line, and will look often to WR Darrell Jackson.
That of course is if DJACK makes it to the game intime.
He’s in Florida with his ailing father. Jerry Rice
might have to put this offense on his back again like
he did on MNF. Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper will receive
solid run support from RB Onterrio Smith, who isn’t
listed on the Vikings injury report. Smith took part in
practice on Wednesday and looked ready to go against the
Seahawks this Sunday in what might be one of the biggest
games of the NFL weekend. Smith is a nice flex option
vs. a Seattle team that is vulnerable at the linebacker
position due to several injuries. WR Randy Moss still
appears to be limited with a sore hamstring, so start
him with caution.
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m., Invesco Field, Denver. Weather: Partly
cloudy, high: 51, low: 30.
Denver's Week #14 opponent, Miami, has suffered their
share of injuries on the defense this season and will
be facing Plummer and the Broncos in the thin air of Mile
High Stadium. Miami will have little success with RB Travis
Minor, so expect the team to attack with QB A.J. Feeley
and the pass. The Dolphins won't be afraid to throw in
the direction of CB Champ Bailey, so WR Chris Chambers
remains a decent third option. Dolphins TE Randy McMichael
has a combined four receptions in his past two starts.
Broncos RB Reuben Droughns is an attractive starter vs.
a Dolphins defense that will miss LB Zach Thomas (hamstring,
out), though Tatum Bell could cut into his carries. QB
Jake Plummer has 15 touchdown passes in six home starts
and is a nice starter, as are WRs Rod Smith and Ashley
Lelie vs. a defensive backfield that was exposed by the
Bills last week. Memo to Denver - Forget what you saw
in Miami last week when the Dolphins racked up huge yards
against the Bills. This offense is not very good and it
starts with the offensive line. The Dolphins are also
without Zack and Junior and are playing for NOTHING but
pride.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte,
N.C.
Weather: Sunny, high: 55, low: 39.
The Rams offense won't be as potent without QB Marc Bulger
(shoulder, doubtful), who will be replaced by brittle
veteran Chris Chandler. Jackson did not practice Wednesday
and Faulk participated in most of the action during the
workout. RB Arlen Harris is slated to start ahead of Marshall
Faulk (knee, probable) and Steven Jackson (knee, questionable),
which makes he a decent flex option. Carolina is 20th
vs. the pass, so be certain to start WRs Torry Holt and
Isaac Bruce. Panthers QB Jake Delhomme should produce
a nice stat line, and it's difficult to bench RB Nick
Goings who has rushed for four TDs in his past three starts.
against a St. Louis team that is vulnerable to the run.
WR Muhsin Muhammad has 100-plus yards in three of his
past four starts and should also be active. Sunday Sleeper
- TE Kris Mangum - The Rams have been very generous to
tight ends. Mangum is a serious sleeper candidate in touchdown
leagues, and a fringe starter if your in need of a tight
end this Sunday.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park, N.Y.
Weather: Cloudy, high: 40, low: 29.
Browns QB Luke McCown will receive his second consecutive
start, but that's no reason to start him vs. a Bills front
seven that has been stellar in recent weeks and will pressure
the rookie the entire afternoon. Buffalo ranks fourth
against. the run, so RBs William Green and Lee Suggs (toe,
questionable) are no better than flex options. Antonio
Bryant - The best receiving option for fantasy owners
on the Browns roster. A touchdown reception wouldn’t
be out of the question. Bills QB Drew Bledsoe should find
continued success against a Browns defense that has allowed
a combined 100 points in the past two weeks, which also
makes WR Eric Moulds a nice option. The combination of
the Bills closing schedule and Bledsoe's new diet make
him a consideration, especially the way he has played
the last three weeks. Cleveland has fallen apart vs. the
run, so expect RB Willis McGahee to star. You want Willis
in your lineup.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore.
Weather: Partly cloudy, high: 50, low: 41.
Ravens QB Kyle Boller hasn't thrown for a touchdown in
his past two starts and is not a recommended option even
with TE Todd Heap back in the mix. The Giants will be
without DT Norman Hand (groin, out), which weakens the
middle of the defense and makes RB Chester Taylor a more
attractive flex option. New York's offense has been terrible
with QB Eli Manning at the helm, so even RB Tiki Barber
is a gamble vs. LB Ray Lewis and a formidable front seven.
QB Eli Manning - Not this year. I’d call him a fringe
starter for Week #14, but the Ravens ’D’ actually
looked mortal last Sunday against the Bengals, and Barber
is still a start in my book, and on my team. Once on pace
to break Marshall Faulk's record for scrimmage yards in
a season, Barber has seen a huge decrease in production
without Kurt Warner on the field.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Georgia Dome, Atlanta. Weather: Dome.
RB Amos Zereoue and the Raiders will have little success
with the run vs. Atlanta, so expect QB Kerry Collins to
throw the ball 30-40 times. Kerry Collins has been exceptional
over the last three weeks and faces a Falcons defense
that is suspect in the secondary. That will mean several
chances for WR Jerry Porter, who has four touchdowns in
the past two weeks, WR Doug Gabriel - Could benefit from
the loss of Curry. The Falcons should bounce back from
a shutout loss to the Buccaneers, so expect a solid all-around
performance from QB Michael Vick vs. Oakland's 28th-ranked
defense. That also bodes well for Vick's first option
in the pass attack, TE Alge Crumpler. RB Warrick Dunn
should also do well and is a nice flex option in leagues
with 12-plus teams.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Texas Stadium, Irving, Texas. Weather:
Sunny, high: 73, low: 44. Saints QB Aaron Brooks
has been an enigma for owners, but he remains a nice option
in leagues with 12-plus teams vs. a weak Dallas pass defense.
This isn't anything to write home about, but against the
Cowboys, his fantasy status this week is a definite start.
WR Joe Horn should have a monster stat line vs. CB Terence
Newman, who has improved in recent weeks but still won't
contain the veteran. WR Donté Stallworth has been
inconsistent, but even he warrants consideration as a
No. 3 or 4 receiver. The Dallas offense will center around
RB Julius Jones, who should dominate a New Orleans team
that ranks last in the NFL vs. the run. Jones and the
Cowboys face one of the most generous defenses in the
league. Make sure Jones is in your lineup. His success
should create chances for QB Vinny Testaverde and the
pass, which makes WR Keyshawn Johnson and TE Jason Witten
both attractive starters. Bench RB Eddie George - The
fantasy grim reaper has visited
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Alltel Stadium, Jacksonville, Fla. Weather:
Sunny, high: 60, low: 44.
Leftwich’s match-up against the Bears is a favorable
one in a must win game, albeit probably too late, for
the Jags. Leftwich is a nice option in leagues with 12-plus
teams, and will look to WR Jimmy Smith often in the vertical
attack.
. If you have other options explore the match-ups as well
though. Bears QB Chad Hutchinson was impressive in his
first start of the season, but don't expect similar production
vs. a Jacksonville team that tends to thrive at home.
Chicago will continue to start RB Thomas Jones in the
backfield, but expect Anthony Thomas to also receive five
to 10 carries. I don’t expect the Bears to have
a lead making the best fit this Sunday in the catch-up
offense--Thomas Jones. The best options in this contest
come from the Jaguars, who will lean on RB Fred Taylor
vs. a Chicago defense that has surrendered the second-most
rushing yards (575) in the league over the past three
weeks. Bench WR Justin Gage - Last year at this time,
Gage was hot. What a difference a year makes
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Reliant Stadium, Houston. Weather: Sunny,
high: 74, low: 54.
Colts QB Peyton Manning will continue to shine vs. a weak
Texans team that ranks 29th in total defense and 28th
against the pass. Does Manning tie or break the record
on the road Sunday? Or does he wait until he returns to
the RCA Dome to face the Ravens in the spotlight of Sunday
night ESPN football? WRs Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne
and Brandon Stokley are all nice options, but the latter
could be the hero against nickel CB Demarcus Faggins.
Texans QB David Carr has been much more productive at
home and is a nice starter in leagues with 12-plus teams
vs. a Colts defense that ranks 29th vs. the pass. RB Domanick
Davis is a solid second back and should remain active,
but it could be WR Andre Johnson who posts the best numbers.
He has averaged 100 yards with four touchdowns in his
past five starts at Reliant Stadium. The Houston Chronicle
reports that wide receiver Andre Johnson (back) will practice
on a limited basis this week. He is listed as questionable
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m., Heinz Field, Pittsburgh. Weather:
Cloudy, high: 43, low: 30.
Jets QB Chad Pennington has been unimpressive in his past
three road starts (one TD, two INTs), and that trend will
continue vs. the Steelers' top-ranked defense. 200 yards
of offense from Pennington will be a solid afternoon.
You have better options this Sunday than risking your
team’s success to the Jets or the Steelers signal
callers. RB Curtis Martin is the one decent option in
green and white, aside from the defense/special teams
unit. Pittsburgh's offense won't fair much better against
the underrated Jets, who surrender the fewest points per
game (14.6) in the league. While the absence of DE John
Abraham (knee, out) is a positive, QB Ben Roethlisberger
still isn't a recommended starter. RB Duce Staley is a
nice flex option, but he'll lose goal-line carries to
Jerome Bettis. WR Antwaan Randle El - If you are looking
for a big play wide out that brings a high-reward Sunday,
Randle El could be your man. That said your team must
be a big underdog this Sunday to take the risk.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego.
Weather: Partly cloudy, high: 72, low: 50.
Buccaneers QB Brian Griese is a decent option vs. San
Diego's 27th ranked pass defense, though his first option
in the pass attack, WR Michael Clayton, should be covered
well by CB Quentin Jammer. That would mean more chances
for WR Joey Galloway, who will find success in the slot.
RB Michael Pittman won't thrive on the ground, but he's
still a threat as a receiver out of the backfield. There
has been only one team in the league that has been better
against the run than DC Wade Phillips and the Chargers,
and that is DC Gregg Williams and the Skins. If you have
choices at running back, please weigh your alternatives
before automatically throwing Pittman into your starting
lineup. Drew Brees has thrown 15 TD passes in six starts
at Qualcomm Stadium and will have the support of RB LaDainian
Tomlinson and the run, which will create play-action chances
for TE Antonio Gates and WR Keenan McCardell, who will
be motivated vs. his old team.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Ariz.
Weather: Sunny, high: 77, low: 53.
49ers QB Ken Dorsey will start in the absence of Tim Rattay
(foot, doubtful), which could mean more chances for TE
Eric Johnson. He’s been slowed down in the last
month---but still a top-tiered option in Week #14. With
RB Kevan Barlow (concussion, out) also on the sidelines,
Maurice Hicks will start and is a decent flex option vs.
Arizona's 29th-ranked run defense. Emmitt Smith (toe,
questionable) is expected to miss his second start. Cardinals
QB Josh McCown will start for the first time in three
weeks but still has little value in Fantasy Football.
The return of McCown to the starting lineup might be more
because of what he did in Week #5 against the 49ers, than
about the injury to John Navarre (finger). Josh had his
best game of the season in Week #5 at Monster Park. RB
Emmitt Smith will start in the backfield and is a decent
flex starter in leagues with 12-plus teams. The 'Niners
are thin in the defensive backfield, so WRs Anquan Boldin
and Larry Fitzgerald are nice third options. Boldin has
yet to find the end zone this season. He missed the first
7-games of the year with a knee injury and has just recently
pronounced himself 100 percent.
Kickoff: 8:30 p.m., FedEx Field, Hyattsville, Md.
Weather: Partly cloudy, high: 50, low: 37.
Redskins running back Clinton Portis rushed for 148 yards
on 31 carries in a Week #13 win over the Giants. Joe Gibbs
said they would give Portis 30 carries and they did. The
Philly defense can be had on the ground, and the Redskins
would be well served to keep McNabb and Westbrook off
the field. Eagles QB Donovan McNabb threw four touchdown
passes in his last contest vs. Washington, and should
post another stellar stat line in this NFC East rematch.
He has thrown four-plus TDs in three of his past four
starts. RB Brian Westbrook and WR Terrell Owens have found
the end zone a combined 13 times in the past four weeks
and should also remain active. Redskins QB Patrick Ramsey
has done little to warrant consideration and is not a
recommended starter vs. a formidable Eagles defense. WR
Laveranues Coles is the one decent starter on the Redskins
entire roster, as #2 WR Rod Gardner has scored a TD in
just two of his past nine starts. I’m not high on
Clinton Portis, who still has to be considered a risk
even after his two-touchdown performance last week. Sleeper
TE - Chris Cooley - Ramsey likes this kid and it has shown
over the last few weeks in his targeted looks.
