NFL SPORTSBOOKS FANTASY
FOOTBALL MATCHUP OF THE WEEK
Shaun Alexander, RB, Seattle: Alexander's stats have been
mediocre in his past two games, but owners should expect
better this week. The Seahawks will recommit themselves
to the run in an attempt to halt a two-game losing streak,
which means 20-25 carries for Alexander against a vulnerable
Panthers defense. The loss of DT Kris Jenkins (shoulder)
and several other injuries to this once formidable unit
have left it with little chance to put the clamps on opposing
backs, which will play right into the hands of Alexander
and the Seahawks. Coach John Fox's team has surrendered
an average of 138.5 rushing yards with nine rushing touchdowns
through six games, so Alexander will be a workhorse both
as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield. The former
Alabama star should compile 125 all-purpose yards and
at least one touchdown, so don't be afraid to keep him
active despite his recent woes.
Kickoff: 4:05
p.m., Qwest Field, Seattle, WA. Weather: showers, high
53, low 45. Showers are in the forecast, so expect
the Panthers to utilize RB Brad Hoover with Stephen Davis
(knee, out) on the sidelines. QB Jake Delhomme leads the
league with 10 interceptions, so the Seahawks will put
on pressure in order to force him into bad decisions.
When he does have time, Delhomme will look to WR Keary
Colbert often. The Seahawks will utilize Alexander should
it rain, which will create more opportunities for QB Matt
Hasselbeck to use play action. WR Darrell Jackson remains
a nice start, but CB Ricky Manning could limit his number
of receptions. WR Koren Ronbinson could lose some chances
to Jerry Rice, who will see more snaps with Bobby Engram
(ankle, out) on the sidelines.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park,
NY. Weather: few showers, wind, high 53, low 40.
The weather could be a factor in this contest, so expect
the Cardinals to lean on RB Emmitt Smith with 15-20 carries.
QB Josh McCown could have a difficult time against a formidable
Bills defense, even with the return of WR Anquan Boldin
from an injured knee. Should the wind and rain become
an issue, expect Bills RB Willis McGahee to be the featured
option for coach Mike Mularkey. Travis Henry will also
see his share of carries, but he's a gamble against an
underrated Cardinals defense that hasn't allowed a rushing
touchdown. QB Drew Bledsoe will continue to post mediocre
numbers, but he will look to WR Eric Moulds in the pass
attack when given time in the pocket to make accurate
passes downfield.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., FedEx Field, Hyattsville, MD.
Weather: partly cloudy, high 69, low 45. Packers
QB Brett Favre should have a nice stat line against a
Redskins defense that will be without LB Lavar Arrington
(knee, out), and FS Sean Taylor (suspension). RB Ahman
Green won't produce monstrous numbers, but WRs Javon Walker
and Donald Driver are solid starters. Redskins QB Mark
Brunell could break out versus the Packers, who will start
rookies CBs Ahmad Carroll and Joey Thomas against veteran
WRs Laveranues Coles and Rod Gardner due the expected
absence of FS Darren Sharper (knee, questionable) and
CB Al Harris (knee, questionable). RB Clinton Portis should
be active against a defense that allows an average of
121.1 rushing yards.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego,
CA. Weather: sunny, high 69, low 53. Raiders
QB Kerry Collins broke out of his slide last week, and
has a chance for consecutive solid performances against
a Chargers defense that is vulnerable against the pass.
That could also mean another nice stat line from WR Joey
Porter, who should handle CB Quentin Jammer. The 'Bolts
do surrendered the second-fewest rushing yards, however,
so RB Amos Zereoue could have a difficult afternoon. QB
Drew Brees is worth the start against a Raiders defense
that is tied for the fourth-most passing touchdowns (11)
allowed. RB LaDainian Tomlinson should keep the silver
and black honest, which could mean single coverage for
veteran WR Keenan McCardell downfield. TE Antonio Gates
has emerged as a must-start in all leagues.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia,
PA. Weather: partly cloudy, high 66, low 47.
Ravens QB Kyle Boller will struggle to produce in the
Terrell Owens Bowl, even with the possible return of TE
Todd Heap (ankle, questionable). The loss of OT Jonathan
Ogden will mean more blitzes from the Eagles defense,
and makes RB Chester Taylor less attractive as a starter
in leagues with 12 or fewer teams. Eagles QB Donovan McNabb
will have to throw more with RB Brian Westbrook (chest/rib,
out) on the sidelines, and should look for Owens downfield
in what will be a battle againt against CB Chris McAlister.
RB Dorsey Levens will start in the absence of Westbrook,
but he won't find much success against LB Ray Lewis and
a formidable Ravens front seven.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., The Coliseum, Nashville, TN.
Weather: partly cloudy, high 69, low 58. Bengals
QB Carson Palmer still hasn't proved he can be a reliable
starter, but he should find WR Chad Johnson against CB
Samari Rolle. RB Rudi Johnson should have another solid
stat line against a Titans team that uses a lot of man
defense and surrenders an average of one rushing touchdown
per game. The status of Titans QB Steve McNair (sternum,
questionable) is up in the air, so it could be Billy Volek
under center. In either event, expect Titans offensive
coordinator Mike Heimerdinger to utilize RB Chris Brown
(toe, questionable) against a Bengals defense that allows
the most rushing yards (154.2) in the league. WR Derrick
Mason has been a workhorse in the pass attack, so expect
another games with five to seven receptions and 80-plus
yards.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome,
Minneapolis, MN. Weather: dome. Giants RB Tiki
Barber should continue to thrive against a Vikings defense
that has surrendered eight rushing touchdowns in six contests.
That will open play action for QB Kurt Warner, who will
look to WR Amani Toomer (knee, questionable) downfield.
Should the veteran receiver be held out, expect WR Ike
Hilliard and TE Jeremy Shockey to more involved in the
offense. QB Daunte Culpepper should thrive against a vulnerable
Giants pass defense, especially if WR Randy Moss can return
to the field. Should Moss be limited, it could be another
solid stat line for RB Mewelde Mooore both as a runner
and receiver out of the backfield. WR Marcus Robinson
and TE Jermaine Wiggins are also nice starts.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas
City, MO. Weather: mostly sunny, high 65, low 48.
Colts RB Edgerrin James will be the focal point of the
offense and should find success against a Chiefs defense
that he has dominated. QB Peyton Manning will have time
in the pocket to make his reads and dissect his opponent
with strikes to WRs Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne.
The Chiefs will lean on RB Priest Holmes, who should find
countless holes on the line of scrimmage. His success
with the run will create opportunities for QB Trent Green
to utilize play action in an effort to stretch the defense.
That makes Green and WRs Eddie Kennison and Johnnie Morton
good options in leagues with 12-plus teams. Expect TE
Tony Gonzalez to also produce at a high level against
the league's worst pass defense.
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m., Invesco Field, Denver, CO.
Weather: partly cloudy, high 51, low 28. Falcons
QB Michael Vick continues to disappoint this season, and
this week's contest against the Broncos solid defense
isn't favorable. RB Warrick Dunn will find moderate success
as a runner and receiver out of the backfield, but WR
Peerless Price won't produce against what will be a determined
CB Champ Bailey. In the end, TE Alge Crumpler could be
Vick's most reliable option. Broncos QB Jake Plummer has
been solid as a starter and will look to WR Rod Smith
to utilize his experience against rookie CB DeAngelo Hall
in the vertical attack. The Falcons defense allowed an
NFL-record eight rushing touchdowns to the Chiefs last
week, so be sure to activate RB Reuben Droughns.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Reliant Stadium, Houston,
TX. Weather: partly cloudy, high 86, low 71.
Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich will continue to thrive against
a Texans defense that is tied for the most passing touchdowns
(14) allowed. That's a favorable statistic for Leftwich
and WR Jimmy Smith, who should beat CB Aaron Glenn for
80-plus yards and one touchdown. RB Fred Taylor rushed
for 230 yards and two touchdowns in two regular-season
games against the Texans last season, which makes him
a nice starter. Texans QB Davis Carr will receive support
from RB Domanick Davis and the run, which will create
chances to utilize play action and find WR Andre Johnson,
who will exploit a Jaguars defense that has surrendered
the fifth-most passing touchdowns (10) and an average
of 29 points in its past two road games.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA.
Weather: partly cloudy, high 58, low 41. Patriots
QB Tom Brady could be forced to throw close to 30 times,
especially if RB Corey Dillon (thigh, questionable) has
trouble against what is a ferocious Steelers run defense.
In an effort to stretch the defense, expect Brady to look
for WRs David Patten and David Givens often in the vertical
pass attack. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will feel
constant pressure from the Patriots front seven, which
will utilize several blitz packages to rattle the rookie
field general. That could open the run for RB Duce Staley,
who has a chance to rush for100-plus yards. WRs Hines
Ward and Plaxico Burress will have their work cut out
against CB Ty Law and his 'mates, but it's difficult to
reserve either in leagues with 12-plus teams.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Texas Stadium, Irving, TX.
Weather: thunderstorms, high 76, low 60. Lions
QB Joey Harrington should have support from RBs Kevin
Jones and Artose Pinner against a Cowboys defense that
surrenders an average of 139.3 rushing yards. That will
create downfield chances for Harrington to find WR Roy
Williams (ankle, questionable), who should dominate CB
Terence Newman. Cowboys QB Vinny Testaverde should have
success against the Lions, who surrender an average of
257.2 passing yards. That also makes WR Keyshawn Johnson
an attractive starter, especially with Terry Glenn (foot,
out) onthe sidelines and the status of Quincy Morgan (hamstring,
questionable) in doubt. TE Jason Witten is also a solid
option, but owners should avoid RB Eddie George if at
all possible.
Kickoff: 8:30 p.m., Soldier Field, Chicago, IL.
Weather: partly cloudy, high 57, low 41. Bears
QB Craig Krenzel makes his first pro start, so expect
the team to lean on RB Thomas Jones against a 49ers defense
that has surrendered 10 rushing touchdowns. With the status
of CB Ahmed Plummer (neck, doubtful) in doubt, WR David
Terrell could produce a decent stat line. 49ers QB Tim
Rattay (forearm, questionable) could miss the contest,
which would push Ken Dorsey back into the spotlight. The
Bears defense allows anaverage of 139.3 rushing yards,
so expect RB Kevan Barlow to receive 20-25 carries. TE
Eric Johnson is on pace to record 120 receptions and will
be the first option in the pass attack, but WR Brandon
Lloyd also warrants consideration as a third receiver
in leagues with 12-plus teams.
