SPORTSBOOKS FANTASY FOOTBALL MATCHUP OF THE WEEK
Fantasy Football owners of Kevan
Barlow will welcome this Sunday NFL Matchup. Barlow has
been a disappointment this season, but it's hard to doubt
his skills and athleticism in an offense that has been
inconsistent. He remains a valuable starter against favorable
opponents, which is what he will face this week against
the Panthers. The defending NFC champions have been crushed
by injuries, turning their once-formidable run defense
into a pushover. The Panthers have allowed a league-high
13 rushing touchdowns and give up 142.1 yards a game,
which bodes well for Barlow's chances to produce a healthy
stat line. 49ers offensive coordinator Ted Tollner will
hand the ball to his workhorse 20-25 times and give him
around five looks as a receiver out of the backfield,
so expect the former Pittsburgh Panther to thrive in this
contest of teams with little hope for the postseason.
It's a Running
Back By Commitee in Carolina. Joey Harris, Brad Hoover,
and maybe even Nick Goings gets in on the action this
week. But the 49ers aren't easy against the run. Except
a close hard hitting contest here. Delhomme and Rattay
will sling it all over Monster Park so expect good numbers
for Mushi Muhammed, Kerry Colbert, Eric Johnson, and Brandon
Lloyd. At the end of the day, someone will have two victories.
That's what's at stake here, folks. Carolina has lost
six in a row, and the 49ers are on a three-game slide.
Both teams make a passel of mistakes, but the 49ers have
the edge with an NFC-high 18 giveaways, including 10 fumbles.
Never fear, the Panthers' 11 interceptions tie for most
in the NFC. There's really no compelling reason to watch
this game unless, say, you have Muhsin Muhammad on your
Fantasy football team. The guy has 21 career 100-yard
games, with three of them against the 49ers. He also had
a career-high three touchdowns against them in 1999.
Oh, and one more thing:
The 49ers' best defensive back, Ahmed Plummer, is liable
to miss another two or three weeks with a neck injury.
Great. Forget about Stephen Davis. He hasn't played since
an Oct. 17 game against Philadelphia, and he's not liable
to play this one. Consider him one of the lucky ones.
Something you
might want to consider: San Francisco quarterback Tim
Rattay has five starts this season, with a 90-plus passer
rating in three of them. Big deal. He lost all five.
Kickoff: 4:15
p.m., Monster Park, San Francisco, CA. Weather: mostly
sunny, high 65, low 51. The Panthers should find
success against a 49ers defense that surrendered 14 passing
touchdowns, which makes QB Jake Delhomme a decent option.
WRs Muhsin Muhammad and Keary Colbert are nice third options.
With RB Stephen Davis (knee) out and Brad Hoover (back,
questionable) in doubt, the Panthers could be forced to
use Joey Harris and Nick Goings in the backfield. 49ers
QB Tim Rattay will receive great run support from Barlow,
but his stat line will be mediocre against a Panthers
defense that has surrendered a league-low four passing
touchdowns. WR Brandon Lloyd could struggle against CB
Ricky Manning, so expect TE Eric Johnson to see several
opportunities.
Kickoff: 1:00
p.m., The Coliseum, Nashville, TN. Weather: sunny, high
63, low 37. The Titans can be vulnerable against
the pass, but even that doesn't make QB Craig Krenzel
attractive as a starter in leagues with 12 or fewer teams.
The Bears will lean on RBs Anthony Thomas and Thomas Jones
(foot, questionable) against a Titans defense that allows
an average of one rushing touchdown per game, but the
potential for both to receive carries is a concern for
owners. The Bears have an underrated defense, so expect
the Titans to establish the run with RB Chris Brown (toe,
questionable) in an effort to create play-action for either
QB Steve McNair (sternum, questionable) or Billy Volek.
WR Derrick Mason will have a difficult task against CB
R.W. McQuarters, but it's difficult to reserve a receiver
of his caliber.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m.,
Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, MO. Weather: Dome. The
Rams have allowed an average of 131.9 rushing yards, so
expect the Seahawks to lean on RB Shaun Alexander the
entire contest. QB Matt Hasselbeck will benefit from the
success with the run, so expect him to look for WRs Darrell
Jackson and Koren Robinson in the vertical attack. Rams
QB Marc Bulger exposed the Seahawks pass defense in Week
5, so Mike Martz will attack CBs Marcus Trufant and Ken
Lucas with downfield strikes to his dynamic duo, WRs Torry
Holt and Isaac Bruce. RB Steven Jackson had more success
on the ground than Marshall Faulk the first time these
team met, which makes the latter a bit less attractive
as a starter in leagues with 12 or fewer teams.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Georgia Dome, Atlanta, GA.
Weather: Dome. The Falcons allow the third-most
receiving yards per game (263.1), so expect Buccaneers
QB Brian Griese to produce good stats. That also bodes
well for WR Michael Clayton, who has built a rapport with
Griese is a quality starter in leagues with 12-plus teams.
RB Michael Pittman might not produce huge totals, but
he is an attractive option against a Falcons defense that
has allowed 12 rushing touchdowns. Falcons QB Michael
Vick might be forced to use his legs rather than his arm
against the Bucs' fourth-ranked pass defense. WR Peerless
Price will struggle to find separation against CB Ronde
Barber, so expect TE Alge Crumpler to be involved. RB
Warrick Dunn won't produce much, but nonetheless is a
serviceable flex option.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Giants Stadium, East Rutherford,
NJ. Weather: sunny, high 49, low 37. The Ravens
will place the offensive burden on RB Jamal Lewis, who
should receive 25-30 carries against a Jets defense that
was dominated by Bills RB Willis McGahee last week. QB
Kyle Boller hasn't thrown for more than one touchdown
in a game, and will continue to struggle with TE Todd
Heap (ankle, out) on the sidelines. Jets QB Quincy Carter
makes his first start in the absence of Chad Pennington
(shoulder, out), which won't bode well for RB Curtis Martin.
The Ravens will stack the line to stop Martin, and force
Carter to beat them in the pass attack. When allowed time
to throw, the presence of CB Chris McAlister and SS Ed
Reed could mean more interceptions than touchdowns.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Cleveland Browns Stadium,
Cleveland, OH. Weather: sunny, high 52, low 39. Browns
QB Jeff Garcia will have a difficult time against the
Steelers, who will put the clamps on RBs William Green
and Lee Suggs and make it easier to use blitzes. With
the status of WRs Andre Davis (toe, doubtful) and Andre
King (ankle, doubtful), Garcia will be forced to look
to WR Antonio Bryant and Suggs when allowed time to pass.
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger should receive run support
from either Duce Staley (hamstring, questionable) or Jerome
Bettis, which will alleviate pressure and allow him to
find WRs Hines Ward and Plaxico Burress against a Browns
defense that is inconsistent against the pass.
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m., FedEx Field, Hyattsville,
MD. Weather: sunny, high 50, low 32. The Redskins
have an tough defense, so expect QB Carson Palmer to have
a difficult time. The Bengals will try to establish the
run with RB Rudi Johnson, but that's easier said than
done against a unit that surrenders 84 rushing yards per
game. WR Chad Johnson has 21 receptions in his past three
games, and appears to be the one member of the roster
who is dependable. The 'Skins will lean on RB Clinton
Portis against a Bengals defense that gives up 149.6 yards,
so expect him to have a stellar stat line. QB Mark Brunell
has been horrid as a starter, which has made WRs Laveranues
Coles and Rod Gardner inconsistent and unreliable options
all season.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., RCA Dome, Indianapolis, IN.
Weather: Dome. The Colts surrender an average
of 286.9 passing yards with 15 touchdowns, so expect the
Texans to unleash QB David Carr and his cannon arm. RB
Domanick Davis is 100 percent and will create play-action
chances for Carr, who will look to WRs Andre Johnson and
Corey Bradford downfield against CBs Nick Harper and Jason
David. Colts QB Peyton Manning should continue his assault
on the record books against the Texans, which has allowed
the second-most passing touchdowns (18) in the NFL. That
means the potential for monster stats from WRs Marvin
Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Brandon Stokley. RB Edgerrin
James will has find success in the AFC South contest,
and is a must-start.
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m., Lambeau Field, Green Bay,
WI. Weather: mostly sunny, high 51, low 31. The
Packers pass defense allows of two touchdowns per game,
which bodes well for Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper. RB Onterrio
Smith will be used both as a runner and receiver, and
is a nice second back or flex option. WRs Marcus Robinson
and Nate Burleson are also attractive starters against
a Packers defense that may be without SS Darren Sharper
(knee, questionable). The Pack will establish the run
with RB Ahman Green, who should thrive against a Vikings
defense that has given up 12 rushing scores. That will
create chances for QB Brett Favre in the pass attack,
so expect WRs Javon Walker and Donald Driver to make an
impact.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Alltell Stadium, Jacksonville,
FL. Weather: partly cloudy, high 71, low 60.
The Lions and RB Kevin Jones will have a difficult time
against a Jaguars defense that is steadfast against the
run at home. So expect QB Joey Harrington to throw the
ball 25-30 times. That should mean several chances for
WR Roy Williams, who still has a sore ankle but is still
a nice third option. WR Az-Zahir Hakim (back, questionable)
will also be in the mix for coach Steve Mariucci. Jaguars
QB David Garrard will start in place of Byron Leftwich
(knee, out), so expect RB Fred Taylor to re-emerge as
the centerpiece of the offense. When Garrard is called
upon to throw, expect him to look toward WR Jimmy Smith
against a Lions defense that has allowed 12 receiving
touchdowns.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe,
AZ. Weather: few showers, high 73, low 56. The
Giants will continue to lean on RB Tiki Barber, who is
on pace to smash Faulk's record for all-purpose yards
in a season. QB Kurt Warner has thrown five touchdowns
all season, and will be forced into bad decisions by a
Cardinals defense that has an underrated pass rush. WR
Amani Toomer hasn't found the end zone this season and
could struggle against CB Duane Starks. The Cardinals
will look to run sweeps with RB Emmitt Smith against a
Giants defense that is without DEs Michael Strahan (pectoral,
out) and Keith Washington (knee, out). WRs Anquan Boldin
and Larry Fitzgerald are nice third options against a
Giants defense that has surrendered 13 receiving touchdowns.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m., Superdome, New Orleans, LA.
Weather: Dome. The Chiefs will look to exploit
a Saints defense that ranks 31st against the pass, so
expect QB Trent Green to be let loose. With little pressure
from the Saints front seven, Green should have time to
find WRs Eddie Kennison and Johnnie Morton and TE Tony
Gonzalez with ease. RB Derrick Blaylock (thigh, questionable)
is expected to start in the absence of Priest Holmes (knee,
doubtful) and is a nice second back or flex option. Saints
QB Aaron Books should find success in the pass attack
against a Chiefs defense that has surrendered 16 passing
touchdowns, which means the potential for stellar stats
from WR Joe Horn. The Chiefs have improved against the
run, but RB Deuce McAllister remains a nice option.
Kickoff: 8:30 p.m., Gillette Stadium, Foxboro,
MA. Weather: sunny, high 45, low 27. The Bills
will lean on McGahee, who has 234 yards and three touchdowns
in his past two games, in order to minimize the pressure
on QB Drew Bledsoe. With CB Ty Law (foot, out) on the
sidelines, expect Bledsoe to take some chances to WR Eric
Moulds. The Bills defense has surrendered a league-low
three rushing touchdowns, so RB Corey Dillon could post
a mediocre stat line. QB Tom Brady has six touchdown passes
and no interceptions in his past two regular-season games
against the Bills, and could have WR Deion Branch (knee,
questionable) back for the first time since Week 2. WR
David Patten has three consecutive 100-yard games and
is a nice second or third option in leagues with 12-plus
teams.
