FOOTBALL MATCHUP OF THE WEEK
Seattle at New England
The Seahawks’ stunning home loss in overtime to
the Rams last week took a little something out of this
matchup of Super Bowl hopefuls. But if the Seahawks can
regain their composure and confidence, they have the weapons
to challenge the Patriots on the road. Seattle will look
to attack the Patriots up the middle with RB Shaun Alexander
running behind a top-notch offensive line. QB Matt Hasselbeck
is also playing well. The Patriots, who have won 19 straight
games, will use workhorse RB Corey Dillon (questionable;
foot), QB Tom Brady and TE Daniel Graham to move the ball
despite an injury-depleted WR corps.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, Mass. Seahawks
QB Matt Hasselbeck has his work cut out against an aggressive
Patriots front seven that averages four sacks per game.
RB Shaun Alexander will find success on the ground, which
will alleviate some of the pressure. When given time,
Hasselbeck will look to WR Darrell Jackson often against
CB Tyrone Poole. However, WR Koren Robinson could be in
for a difficult game when opposite CB Ty Law. Patriots
offensive coordinator Charlie Weis will look to exploit
a vulnerable defensive backfield, so expect QB Tom Brady
to take some chances downfield to WR David Patten. RB
Corey Dillon (toe, questionable) won't produce a great
stat line, so expect the pass and WR David Givens to be
more involved.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J.
Weather: 49ers QB Tim Rattay will have confidence after
his 417-yard performance last weekend, so expect a more
balanced attack that will create better chances for RB
Kevan Barlow against the Jets' front seven. TE Eric Johnson
(ribs, questionable) will continue to be the first option
in the pass, but WR Brandon Lloyd won't find much success
against CB Donnie Abraham. The 'Niners defense is littered
with injuries, so expect Jets QB Chad Pennington to have
time in the pocket to find his receivers downfield. Should
WR Santana Moss (hamstring, questionable) be sidelined,
Wayne Chrebet would have some value as a third or fourth
receiver against a defensive backfield that is without
CB Mike Rumph.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., ALLTELL Stadium, Jacksonville, Fla. Chiefs
RB Priest Holmes should have a gigantic stat line against
the Jaguars, whose defense has been soft against the run
over the past two weeks. The effectiveness of Holmes will
creates chances for QB Trent Green to make his reads and
throw accurate passes to WR Eddie Kennison and TE Tony
Gonzalez. Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich appears to have hit
his stride and should have time to throw as RB Fred Taylor
will exploit a Kansas City front seven that is vulnerable
to the run. Leftwich will look often to his first option,
WR Jimmy Smith, who should find the end zone for the second
time this season against Chiefs CB Eric Warfield.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Ford Field, Detroit. Packers QB Brett
Favre will be under constant pressure from an improved
Detroit front seven that has 16 sacks in four games. When
given time in the pocket, he will hit WR Javon Walker
despite the expected return of CB Dré Bly (knee,
questionable). RB Ahman Green should have an improved
performance and remains a nice option. Lions QB Joey Harrington
should have a solid stat line, especially if WR Roy Williams
(ankle, questionable) is able to take the field. The Packers
defensive backfield is one of the more vulnerable units
in the league, so expect Harrington to take some chances
to Williams or Tai Streets. RB Kevin Jones (ankle, questionable)
might be a good start vs. the Pack, who allow an average
of 149.8 yards on the ground.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., The Coliseum, Nashville, Tenn. Texans
QB David Carr has come into his own, and his rapport with
WR Andre Johnson has produced solid stat lines. RB Domanick
Davis will find moderate success, but the Carr-to-Johnson
connection is one to watch. Coach Dom Capers will move
Johnson around the line to avoid CB Samari Rolle and exploit
weaker cornerbacks, which bodes well for his numbers.
Titans QB Steve McNair will receive support from RB Chris
Brown (ankle, questionable), so expect him to exploit
a defensive backfield that has surrendered 13 passing
touchdowns. WR Derrick Mason (ankle, questionable) posted
177 yards and three touchdowns in his last regular-season
home game against Houston, so expect a stellar performance.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia.
The Panthers offense has been troubled by injuries, but
the team hopes RB Stephen Davis (knee, questionable) can
return. RB Nick Goings would be the starter should Davis
remain out. QB Jake Delhomme might have to shoulder most
of the load, and will find WRs Muhsin Muhammad and Keary
Colbert when allowed time to makes his reads. Eagles QB
Donovan McNabb will have the support of RB Brian Westbrook,
who is a solid option against a Panthers defense that
has allowed 159 yards per game on the ground. McNabb,
who will be motivated after last season's loss to Carolina
in the NFC Championship Game, will test CB Ricky Manning
will strikes to WR Terrell Owens.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Soldier Field, Chicago. The Redskins
offense must look to RB Clinton Portis for some production
against a mediocre Bears front seven. QB Mark Brunell
isn't an option, and the injured finger of WR Laveranues
Coles makes him a gamble against CB R.W. McQuarters. The
Bears will look to exploit a Redskins defense that has
been decimated by injuries. DE Phillip Daniels (groin)
is out, LB Micheal Barrow (knee) is doubtful, and several
other important components including LB Lavar Arrington
(knee) are questionable. While QB Jonathan Quinn will
be ineffective overall, owners should still expect RB
Thomas Jones to have another solid performance. WR David
Terrell has been inconsistent, and could struggle against
CB Shawn Springs.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park, N.Y.
Weather: The Dolphins offense is a mess between injuries
and an ineffective line, so QB Jay Fielder (ribs, questionable)
could be in for a long afternoon. With showers in the
forecast, expect the 'Fins to utilize RB Brock Forsey,
who is a decent flex option. TE Randy McMichael will continue
to be the first option in the pass, though the absence
of CB Troy Vincent (knee, out) makes WR Chris Chambers
a decent start. QB Drew Bledsoe will feel the heat from
the Miami front seven but should still look to WR Eric
Moulds downfield. RB Travis Henry (foot, questionable)
could be sidelined, which would mean a chance for Willis
McGahee to start for the first time as a pro.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Georgia Dome, Atlanta. The Chargers offense
has scored 72 points in its past two games, but that trend
will end in Atlanta. QB Drew Brees will feel pressure
from an aggressive front seven, so expect big carries
from RB LaDainian Tomlinson in an effort to establish
the run. When allowed time to throw, Brees will look to
TE Antonio Gates and take some shots downfield to WR Reche
Caldwell against CB Kevin Mathis. Falcons QB Michael Vick
hasn't grasped the West Coast offense, but he should look
to WR Peerless Price in the vertical attack against CB
Quentin Jammer. RB Warrick Dunn will remain a prominent
option for coach Jim Mora, though the back will be hard-pressed
to compile big totals against a Chargers front seven that
has done well against the run.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Cleveland Browns Stadium, Cleveland.
Bengals RB Rudi Johnson should have a nice afternoon against
a Cleveland defense that has surrendered eight touchdowns
on the ground. His success should create chances for QB
Carson Palmer, who will look to increase the gastric upsets
of the Browns defensive backfield with strikes to WR Chad
Johnson. Peter Warrick (shin, doubtful) is out, so T.J.
Houshmandzadeh will start. Browns QB Jeff Garcia should
receive support from RBs William Green and Lee Suggs against
a Bengals defense that struggles against the run, but
the latter is the more effective option. When Garcia has
time, expect him to look to WR André Davis, who
has 194 yards and one touchdown in his past two games.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Texas Stadium, Irving, Texas. Steelers
QB Ben Roethlisberger has been effective as the starter
and should find some success against a Dallas defensive
backfield that has several injuries. That bodes well for
WRs Hines Ward and especially Plaxico Burress, who should
handle CB Jacques Reeves. RB Duce Staley should turn in
some nice runs, which he's made in the past against Dallas
during his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles. Cowboys
RB Eddie George will continue to be ineffective, so expect
QB Vinny Testaverde to utilize the intermediate pass with
TE Jason Witten. The veteran will also look to stretch
the field with downfield strikes to WRs Terry Glenn and
Antonio Bryant, but neither is better than a third option
in most leagues.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m., Network Associates Coliseum, Oakland,
Calif. Broncos QB Jake Plummer hasn't had great success
on the road, so expect the Broncos to run with Quentin
Griffin and Reuben Droughns. Plummer's best option in
the pass attack will be WR Rod Smith, but the veteran
will struggle against CB Phillip Buchanon. Raiders QB
Kerry Collins has been prone to turnovers, so expect Broncos
defensive coordinator Larry Coyer to send the house in
an effort to rattle him. Raiders coach Norv Turner will
look to stretch the field, so Collins will take some shots
to WR Ronald Curry. CB Champ Bailey will blanket WR Jerry
Porter. RB Amos Zereoue should be effective as a receiver
out of the backfield, but his totals on the ground will
be mediocre.
Kickoff: 8:30 p.m., Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans,
La. Saints QB Aaron Brooks should have time in the pocket
to makes his reads and hit WRs Joe Horn and Donté
Stallworth often against a vulnerable Vikings defensive
backfield. RB Deuce McAllister appears back from an injured
ankle, and should find success on the ground and as a
receiver out of the backfield. Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper
will receive support from RBs Mewelde Moore and Moe Williams,
so expect him to utilize play action with strikes to WR
Randy Moss, who will have a monster stat line. WR Marcus
Robinson should also find success in what has the potential
to be a barnburner and is a good third or fourth option.
Ks John Carney and Morten Andersen are also nice starts
in all leagues.
