NFL SPORTSBOOKS FANTASY
FOOTBALL MATCHUP OF THE WEEK
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m. These two teams combined to score 94
points in two games against each other last season, but
that doesn't guarantee great production this time around.
The Seahawks defense has allowed a mere 4.3 points per
game, and should hold Rams RB Marshall Faulk to mediocre
numbers. QB Marc Bulger, who was intercepted twice in
his last regular-season start at Seattle, will look to
WRs Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce in a pass attack that could
be inconsistent. The success of Alexander on the ground
will create chances for Hasselbeck in the vertical attack.
WRs Darrell Jackson found the end zone in both games against
the Rams last season, and should increase that streak
with another score against that could be without SS Adam
Archuleta (back).
Shaun Alexander, RB,
Seattle didn't post great yardage totals (45, 52) in the
two games before his team's bye week, but his fortunes
are about to turn for the better. The Alabama product
is back to 100 percent with the extra time to rest, and
feels his knee will no longer hinder his cuts or quickness.
That's bad news for the Rams, who have surrendered four
touchdowns on the ground and allow an average of 137.2
yards per game. Seahawks offensive coordinator Gil Haskell
will exploit that weakness with countless carries to Alexander,
whose prowess will soften the opposition and open the
pass for QB Matt Hasselbeck. The underrated Alexander
should go over the 100-yard mark for the second time this
season, and find the end zone at least once in this NFC
West duel.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m. The Dolphins have been anemic on offense,
and QB Jay Fiedler won't soon turn it around against the
powerful Patriots at Gillette Stadium. The veteran won't
have much time in the pocket behind a questionable line,
which will also keep RB Leonard Henry from a high level
of production. WR Chris Chambers (knee, questionable)
must contend with one bad wheel, CB Ty Law and a fierce
defensive backfield, so expect TE Randy McMichael to be
the best option in the pass. QB Tom Brady won't find great
success against LB Zach Thomas and the 'Fins, but he should
hit WR David Givens several times and will look to TE
Daniel Graham inside the red zone. RB Corey Dillon is
a nice start, and should produce against Miami's front
seven.
Kickoff: 1:00pm. Texans QB David Carr should find success
against a vulnerable defensive backfield that will miss
LBs Chris Claiborne (calf, questionable) and E.J. Henderson
(knee, out). WR Andre Johnson will be Carr's first option
and is a great start as is RB Domanick Davis, who has
been upgraded from questionable to probable and will start
despite a sore ankle. Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper will
exploit a defensive backfield that has given up eight
touchdowns, which means great numbers for the veteran
field general and WR Randy Moss. RB Mewelde Moore will
start in the absence of Michael Bennett (knee), Onterrio
Smith (suspension) and Moe Williams (calf, questionable),
who will be limited to third downs.
Kickoff: 1 p.m. Browns QB Jeff Garcia has averaged a mere
156.5 passing yards through four games, and will feel
constant pressure from a formidable Steelers front seven.
WRs André Davis and Quincy Morgan will be his top
targets when allowed time to pass, but their inconsistent
numbers make each a gamble as a starter. Coach Butch Davis
has named RB William Green the starter, but RB Lee Suggs
has the hot hand and is a better option in all leagues.
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will find moderate success,
which will come in the form of constant strikes to WR
Hines Ward. RB Duce Staley (toe, questionable) could be
limited, but he remains a nice option against a Cleveland
front seven that has surrendered five touchdowns on the
ground.
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m. Giants QB Kurt Warner
has done well as the team's starter, but he's thrown a
mere two touchdowns in four games and should be reserved.
RB Tiki Barber is an underrated stud and should remain
active, despite the fact that Dallas hasn't surrendered
a touchdown on the ground. The pass defense is vulnerable
with SS Darren Woodson (back) and CB Pete Hunter (knee)
out, so WR Amani Toomer should find success. Cowboys QB
Vinny Testaverde will throw often as the Giants stop RB
Eddie George and the run, so expect the veteran to focus
on intermediate routes to WR Keyshawn Johnson. Coach Bill
Parcells will also look to stretch the defense, so expect
WRs Antonio Bryant and Terry Glenn to make an impact.
Kickoff: 1 p.m.Lions QB Joey Harrington has come into
his own this season, and will make several connections
with rookie WR Roy Williams against a mediocre defensive
backfield that could be without CB Jason Webster (knee,
questionable). RB Artose Pinner will start in the absence
of Kevin Jones, who is out with an injured ankle. The
Falcons run defense is one of the more effective in the
NFL, so start Pinner with caution. QB Michael Vick should
have a breakout performance, and will look to exploit
a defensive backfield that could be without CBs Dré
Bly (knee, questionable) and Andre Goodman (hamstring,
doubtful). TE Alge Crumpler has been Vick's No. 1 option,
and will continue his productive streak. RB Warrick Dunn
remains an underrated but a solid option in all leagues.
Kickoff: 1 p.m. Buccaneers QB Chris Simms makes his first
pro start, so expect coach Jon Gruden to lean on RB Michael
Pittman to support the young field general. The Saints
run defense has surrendered a league-high nine touchdowns,
so expect Gruden to exploit it with 20-25 carries from
Pittman, who have a solid afternoon and is a nice option
in leagues with 12-plus teams. When he has time in the
pocket, expect Simms to focus on WRs Michael Clayton and
TimBrown in the vertical attack. Saints QB Aaron Brooks
will look to WR Joe Horn, who has 14 receptions for 224
yards in his past two home games against the Buccaneers.
RB Deuce McAllister (ankle, questionable) could return
and share carries with Aaron Stecker, so start each with
extreme caution.
Kickoff: 1:00pm. Neither of these defenses has been effective,
so expect touchdowns and field goals galore in this AFC
contest. Raiders QB Kerry Collins is a good start and
will look to exploit a vulnerable defensive backfield
with downfield strikes to WRs Jerry Porter and Ronald
Curry. RB Amos Zereoue will see more carries in the absence
of Tyrone Wheatley, who is out with an injured shoulder.
The presence of RB Edgerrin James will give QB Peyton
Manning time to throw against a Raiders defense that must
remain honest, so WRs Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and
Brandon Stokley are all nice options in what should be
a barnburner. Ks Sebastian Janikowski and Mike Vanderjagt
(hamstring, questionable) are also good starts.
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m. Bills RB Travis Henry could be the
stud of this AFC East contest. He has been successful
against the Jets during his career -- including a 169-yard,
one-touchdown performance last season -- and should be
the centerpiece of the offense. QB Drew Bledsoe continues
to be unproductive, but that hasn't hindered the numbers
of WR Eric Moulds. Jets QB Chad Pennington should produce
at a high level against a defensive backfield that is
without SS Lawyer Milloy (forearm, out) and CB Troy Vincent
(knee, out), so expect several strikes to WRs Santana
Moss and Justin McCareins. RB Curtis Martin has a difficult
matchup against a formidable run defense, but the veteran
remains a solid option in all leagues.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m. Cardinals RB EmmittSmith
should come back to earth after a back-to-the-future performance
last weekend, but he remains a decent flex option in leagues
with 12-plus teams. QB Josh McCown has done little to
warrant consideration, but WR Larry Fitzgerald is a decent
third option with CB Mike Rumph (arm) out of action. The
49ers will lean on RB Kevan Barlow to produce against
the Cardinals front seven, which allows an average of
145.8 rushing yards per game. TE Eric Johnson will be
the first option in the pass attack, so expect another
solid stat line. With CB Duane Starks (shoulder, out)
on the sidelines, WR Curtis Conway has a chance to find
the end zone for the second consecutive week.
Kickoff: 4:05 p.m. Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich should have
his second consecutive productive week, as he picks apart
a Chargers defensive backfield that has surrendered six
touchdowns. That means several chances for WR Jimmy Smith,
who will use his experience to overwhelm CB Quentin Jammer.
The 'Bolts have a good run defense, so RB Fred Taylor's
yardage totals could be less than stellar. Chargers QB
Drew Brees will feel the heat from DT Marcus Stroud all
afternoon, so expect fewer passes and more carries for
RB LaDainian Tomlinson. WR Reche Caldwell will have a
difficult time against the Jaguars and SS Donovin Darius,
who will limit open seams. TE Antonio Gates might also
have trouble getting off the line, but he remains a decent
option in all leagues.
Kickoff: 4:15 p.m. Broncos RB Quentin
Griffin (ankle, questionable) could share carries with
Tatum Bell and Garrison Hearst, so start him with extreme
caution. QB Jake Plummer will feel the heat from DE Julius
Peppers and the Panthers front seven, so his numbers will
be mediocre. WRs Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie will face
a solid pass defense, so expect little production. QB
Jake Delhomme will be forced to avoid WR Muhsin Muhammad,
who will be covered well by CB Champ Bailey, so rookie
Keary Colbert should be more involved. RB Stephen Davis
(knee, questionable) could return and share the load with
DeShaun Foster, so start each at your own risk. Ks John
Kasay and Jason Elam should both make an impact.
Kickoff: 8:30 p.m. The final contest for the Ravens before
RB Jamal Lewis is suspended, coach Brian Billick is certain
to ride his workhorse the entire night. The Redskins will
be without LBs Lavar Arrington (knee, out), Micheal Barrow
(knee, out) and DE Phillip Daniels (groin, out), so expect
LT Jonathan Ogden and the Ravens line to overpower the
'Skins and create holes for Lewis. QB Kyle Boller still
lacks a reliable option in the pass attack, and WR Randy
Hymes could have a difficult time against CB Shawn Springs.
Redskins RB Clinton Portis remains a must start, but is
inconsistent numbers might continue against LB Ray Lewis.
CB Chris McAlister will blanket WR Laveranues Coles, so
expect QB Mark Brunell to look towards Rod Gardner often.
