Super Bowl Betting - Colts vs Bears Preview
by: Betus.com
Indianapolis
Offense vs Chicago Defense
The Chicago Bears have played two games in the
postseason and both times they received a different
performance from their defense.
Against the Seattle Seahawks,
the Bears allowed under 200 yards passing, but
permitted 125 rushing yards and only plucked one
takeaway.
Against the New Orleans Saints,
the Bears allowed 354 passing yards, but held
the Saints rushers to a total of 56 yards rushing
and forced four takeaways.
Quite clearly, the Bears
are susceptible to allowing yards both ways on
defense and that will likely be evident on Super
Bowl Sunday.
Colts quarterback Peyton
Manning has been extremely patient in the playoffs
and has taken whatever defenses have given him.
When they have played deep, he has been more than
willing to take 10-yard dump-offs to running backs
and tight-ends.
Without Tommie Harris in
the middle of the Bears defense, their whole unit
has weakened. While they were able to overachieve
against the Seahawks and Saints at home, where
the crowd and sloppy field played into their favor,
they won't have that advantage against the Colts.
The main problem is that
Manning is hard to stop with any form of a basic
defense. If he is aware where the pressure is
coming from and where the coverage will be, he
knows to get rid of the ball quickly and exactly
where to go with it.
While the Bears will likely
lose the battle between the 20's, they can still
win the war by curtailing red zone effectiveness
and forcing turnovers.
Chicago
Offense vs Indianapolis Defense
While the Colts' defense stifled their first two
opponents in the playoffs, simply because those
teams did not show up with the proper intensity,
they still showed signs of their old form by allowing
34 points at home to the New England Patriots.
While the Colts were unable
to stop Tom Brady, they churned out another solid
performance stopping the run. Much of football
is based on confidence and although the Colts
struggled defensively earlier in the season, they
are playing with a lot of confidence right now.
The Bears will have to attack
on the ground and they will be very committed.
They have an excellent offensive line, which should
be able to clear the smaller Colts unit out of
the way.
The Colts have stopped Larry
Johnson, Jamal Lewis and the tandem of Corey Dillon
and Laurence Maroney in the playoffs. The Bears
look is nothing new that they haven't seen.
The key for the Bears will
be to prevent the Colts from stacking the line
of scrimmage to stop the run.
The Bears have favorable
matchups at wide receiver with Bernard Berrian,
who can stretch the depths of any zone coverage,
and Muhsin Muhammad, a savvy veteran, who knows
where to find the holes in a zone.
If the running game isn't
effective early on, the Bears will have to start
passing the ball with some efficiency to loosen
up the defense.
All eyes will be on Rex Grossman
again and it is worth noting that he has thrown
only nine touchdowns versus 11 interceptions and
boasts a quarterback rating of 67.0 on the road
this season.
Special
Teams
The return units heavily favor the Chicago Bears,
as Devin Hester has proven to be a game-breaker.
The Colts do have Mr. Clutch in Adam Vinatieri,
should it come down to a final kick, but they
will have to keep Hester under wraps because he
can change the whole course of the game on one
play.
Prediction
With the Colts rush defense playing at a high
level right now, the Bears will either have to
prove that their rushing attack is superior or
will have to rely on Rex Grossman to win the game.
The Colts are the better
team but the better team doesn't always win.
Turnovers and special teams
can prove to be the ultimate equalizer and, as
long as the Colts don't lose in those categories,
Super Bowl XLI is theirs to lose.
