Bears
and Colts - January 22, 2007
by: VIP.com
By Michael Robinson: It took
Peyton Manning nine NFL seasons to make it to
his first Super Bowl, but it was worth the wait.
The Colts rallied from a 21-3 second quarter deficit
to stun New England 38-34, a game that is already
marked as one for the ages.
Indianapolis scored four
touchdowns in the second half, the last a Joseph
Addai three-yard run with a minute left to play.
The Colts now move on to their first Super Bowl
since moving from Baltimore in 1984.
For New England, their dream
of matching the Pittsburgh Steelers by winning
four Super Bowls in six years is over. Surprisingly,
it was not the offense and the passing attack
that let them down, but the defense.
The Patriots always seemed
to shut their opponents down in the crunch time
of big games. This time though, they were snowed
under by Indianapolis’ offensive avalanche.
The Pats face some key personnel
issues as they do every year, but they are armed
with two first round draft picks, and they will
be one of the favorites in the AFC again next
year.
In the NFC, the Saints came
into their game at Chicago as the sentimental
favorite, as well as the pick of most of the experts.
However, New Orleans had
a “deer in the headlights” look for
most of the first half, losing three fumbles to
a ball-stripping Bears defense. The Bears took
advantage of the turnovers to go up 16-0, making
the Saints wish they were still in the climate
controlled Superdome as opposed to frigid Soldier
Field.
To New Orleans credit though,
they did not fold, and marched in for a touchdown
before the half, giving the team a much needed
morale boost heading into the locker room.
Chicago may have out-rushed
New Orleans 124-25 at the half, but Bears quarterback
Rex Grossman only had 37 yards passing, and he
was looking as shaky as ever.
The second half started off
in fine fashion for New Orleans as a Drew Brees
to Reggie Bush 88 yard hook-up cut the lead to
16-14. That was as close as the Saints would get
as a safety, and more turnovers, let Chicago run
away with the game.
While the contest was
a lot closer than the 39-14 final indicates, it
was still a great effort at home from the Bears.
Chicago coach, Lovie Smith became the first African-American
to lead his team to a Super Bowl with Tony Dungy
following him. While we all look forward to the
day when that is no longer an issue, it is a milestone
worth noting.
