The
Cover Corner - February 02, 2007

Michael Licalsi: The Cover Corner column has a
year-to-date record of 31-38 before taking on
the Super Bowl. After four pre-season games, 16
regular season games, and the playoffs, we are
almost at the big event. Now, we just have to
wait 60 more hours.
Editor’s Note: The
selections in this column are purely the opinion
of the writer, and are not being endorsed by any
parties.
Chicago (+7) Indianapolis
The early money on this game
was on Chicago, dropping the spread to 6.5 points,
but it has since rebounded back up to the more
even, seven points.
Chicago struggled in their
first playoff game against Seattle, but they had
a dominating second game against New Orleans.
The Saints win silenced all the critics who predicted
that Peyton Manning would be facing his hometown
team in the Super Bowl.
Indianapolis had a legendary
comeback win over New England in the AFC championship
game. Now, Manning has a great chance to go from
a super regular season player to a Super Bowl
legend.
The Colts have the offensive
line, receivers and running backs to pile up points
on any defense, even the Bears. Throw in the good
weather of Miami and the Colts are even more dangerous,
although not as much as on their own turf.
The big advantage I see in
this game is Indianapolis staying with the hurry-up
offense and confusing a Bears defense that is
used to dictating the terms.
The only way I like Chicago
in this game is if either of the two starting
quarterbacks get hurt.
If Manning gets hurt, backup
Jim Sorgi is not going to lead this team to a
Super Bowl win.
If Rex Grossman gets hurt,
then I actually fear the Bears more, because I
really believe that backup Brian Griese can come
in and do a better job. Why Griese did not permanently
replace Grossman sometime during the season is
beyond me.
One factor to remember is
that the Colts have won on the road in this year’s
playoffs, while the Bears have not had to leave
the comfy confines of Soldier Field.
Since I don’t see Manning
getting injured in this game (he never does),
I’m going with the guy who is about to cement
his reputation as one of the top quarterbacks
to ever don a uniform.
Pick: Indianapolis
