Super
Bowl PICK - february 1, 2007
by: VIP.com
This column went 0-1-1 ATS
in the NFL conference championship games with
New Orleans losing, and New England with a push.
The column is now 24-21 on the weekly selections
and 14-7 on other picks during the football season.

Chicago (+7) Indianapolis:
Which Indianapolis offense
is going to show up this week?
Is it the one that struggled
against Kansas City and Baltimore, as well as
in the first half against New England? Or will
it be the juggernaut that put up 32 points in
the second half versus the Patriots, stumping
the defensive mastermind himself, Bill Belichick.
The Colts have shown good
balance running the ball in the playoffs with
the combination of rookie Joseph Addai and veteran
Dominic Rhodes. A big part of the reason was defenses
concentrating on the passing game, but they got
the job done nonetheless.
The biggest match-up in this
game is Peyton Manning and the passing attack
against the Bears’ defense. You don’t
need to be an NFL analyst to figure that one out.
Chicago is not likely to blitz much, but instead
hope that the speed of their linebackers and secondary
can help cover the Colts’ wide array of
receivers.
The Bears love to create
turnovers, especially by stripping the ball from
receivers. Of course, a couple of early interceptions
from Manning would be nice to shake his confidence
a bit.
When Chicago is on offense,
they need to follow one word of advice, patience.
The Colts know that the Bears want to run the
ball with Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson to take
the pressure off of quarterback Rex Grossman.
Thus, they are likely to stack the line of scrimmage
on first down.
Even if the running game
is not working early on for Chicago, they must
stay with it as their offensive line can wear
down the Colts front seven.
The Bears’ receiver
combination of Bernard Berrian and Muhsin Muhammad
can make plays down the field against the Indianapolis
secondary.
That is especially true if
cornerback Nick Harper is less than 100% with
his ankle injury.
Grossman is going to need
to deliver the ball to his open receivers, and
he must play at least a mediocre game for Chicago
to stay close. Despite all his critics, Grossman
has the talent to play well in this game. Now
all he has to do is prove it.
Game Summary
This is the first Super Bowl
appearance for almost all the players, and there
will be tremendous nerves on both sides. However,
Manning has the most to lose in this game from
a legacy standpoint, and he has been known to
struggle in big games.
Manning should be sky -high
with confidence after his great second half against
the Patriots, but you just never know. There is
also the question as to whether the Colts will
overlook Chicago a bit after finally getting past
their arch nemesis in New England.
The Bears have a chance to
win this game if their defense and special teams
make some big plays. In the end though, I think
Indianapolis wins ever so slightly, less than
the seven point spread.
Pick: Chicago
