1. Playing Suited Big Cards
Obviously if your big cards are suited it is preferable
over having them not suited. However, that difference
is not as great as it appears. With two suited cards
you only make a flush about 6% of the time and that
assumes you stay in to catch two runners if one
of your suit is on the flop. You will flop two of
your suit 10.9% of the time, and connect on your
four-flush 35 % of the time. When you flop one of
your suit your flush will connect less than 5% of
the time. That said, with large suited cards, these
hands also create opportunities to make high pairs,
and you also have high straight possibilities.
Suited hands, both big cards and smaller cards,
play better in volume pots with many callers. This
is because when they make a flush the bets your
opponents put into the pot are often very weak or
dead bets. You want opponents available to make
those plays. The greater the number of opponents
the greater the propensity those negative expectation
plays will be made against you. When you hold or
are drawing to less than the nut flush be highly
aware that you can make your flush and lose. (A
king high flush will lose to an Ace high flush 6%
of the time against opponents who will play Axs,
Kxs.)
AKs-AQs-AJs,-ATs-KQs:
With the volume concept in mind, I tend to flat
call in early position with these hands. Opening
in middle position, raising with these hands becomes
more viable because you have lost some of your volume
potential, and the profit from the hands begins
to shift from flush potential to high card potential.
The later your position and the stronger the current
situation based on such variables as texture, the
more often you should raise.
KJs-QJs,-JTs,-KTs-QTs:
In tight and/or aggressive games, as a general
rule these hands belong in the muck in early position.
In loose passive games and where your after-the-flop
play is superior to your opponents these hands are
early callers. (I rate JTs over KTs or QTs, because
of its added straight possibilities.) In middle
position these hands are worth calling a single
bet whether opening or acting behind a limper, where
you don't expect aggression from behind. Note that
the lower the rank of the hand the stronger the
positives of the situation must be. In late position,
unless you think you are in kicker trouble KJs and
QJs are generally raising hands. KTs, QTs and JTs
are worth a raise only if the situation is a strong
one. Raise more liberally in situations where you
think your opponents have the propensity to check
to the raiser, giving you an option for a free card.
Also raise more liberally if you think you may rob
or fold the blinds. Note that the propensity to
be in kicker trouble (more thoroughly discussed
under unsuited big cards) is great with these hands.
Most players have a tendency to overplay these hands,
and go off for too many bets when they make the
second best hand, as these hands so often do.
