Playing Big Hands

1. Playing Big Pairs
AA-KK: The two best hands period! Slowplaying may be correct in some situations, but as a general rule raising with these hands no matter what your position, how many players or whatever the bet is to you is a good rule of thumb. Slowplaying KK has significantly less value and more risk than slowplaying AA. You will over time pick up each of these once out of every 221 hands, or once every 6-7 hours of normal center-dealt live play, perhaps once every 3-4 hours of Internet play. Make the most of them when you get them, but also remember that they don't always win. They make a lot more in late position than early position.

QQ: Raisable in any position. In rare instances where you think it likely may be beaten pre-flop calling the multiple raises or folding the hand may be correct. Note: Rare instances. As a general rule re-raising a raiser is the correct play. If it is three or more bets to you, you need to consider the range of hands the raising player(s) will raise with and possibly adjust your play accordingly. Generally not a hand to be slowplayed, as you'd prefer not to let in hands with a King or an Ace.

JJ: A raising hand from any position if nobody has previously raised. Playing it behind a raise is a much trickier matter and very situation dependent. Re-raising is an option when the player who raised will raise with a wide range of hands that includes many inferior hands to JJ. Calling pre-flop and making a determination on the flop when you have better information to make a determination merits serious consideration if you are unsure where you stand. If, due to the action in a given situation, you think it highly likely the hand is beaten and the number of opponents is not great (less than 4) then folding is a valid option.

TT: Very similar to JJ, only the problems of potential higher pairs and overcards out against you are magnified. Re-raise with TT much tighter than JJ. Other than that the hands are conceptually very similar. Tend not raise TT pre-flop in a game where your opponents are extremely unlikely to fold and you are probably looking to flop a set for the hand to win. TT, and for that matter JJ, play more like medium pairs than big pairs in loose, aggressive games.
