Playing Medium Hands

1. Playing Medium Pairs
99-88-77: These hands are very situationally dependent. In tight games, in early position, with good aggressive players behind you, folding is a valid option. In average texture games you can call with these hands from early through middle position if you feel that players behind you will call and the game is not highly aggressive. Calling a raise from early or middle position is only correct if the pot is going to be played with significant volume. Raising from middle position can often be correct in games in which your value of aggression is high, and you have a good chance to win the pot without a call or play shorthanded against a player(s) that you have good reads and control over. In late position, with many callers, even if it is two bets to you, calling is correct, for the most part in the hopes of flopping a set. If it is one bet to you and your opponents are likely to check to the raiser on the flop, raising with the thought of taking a free card if you miss your set on the flop is a valid option. If you are calling three-bets cold with these hands, there need to be at least 5 (preferably more) opponents to make calling correct, and you are calling only because you're getting the right price to draw to a set.
