(Sunday, January 9th)
Final Score: Minnesota 31, Green Bay 17
Green Bay, WI (Wager On
Football - NFL Wagering) - Daunte Culpepper
threw for 284 yards and four touchdowns, as the
Minnesota Vikings held off the Green Bay Packers,
31-17, in an NFC Wild Card matchup at Lambeau Field.
Culpepper was 19-of-29 passing, while Randy Moss
had four catches for 70 yards and two scores. Minnesota,
which came in having lost four of their last five
games in the regular season, became just the second
8-8 team in NFL history to win a playoff game, and
the second in as many days. On Saturday, the St.
Louis Rams became the first when they bested the
Seattle Seahawks.
The Vikings will travel to Philadelphia next weekend
to face the NFC's top seed, the Eagles, at Lincoln
Financial Field. That game is set for Sunday, January
16, at 1 p.m. (et).
"We made enough plays to carry the day,"
said Vikings' head coach Mike Tice. "It was
a tough battle, but winning helps (injuries) heal
quickly. We're pleased we're able to take the next
step. We were looking forward to another chance
to play Philadelphia, and now we have that opportunity."
Green Bay, meanwhile, came into Sunday's game as
one of the NFL's hottest teams, having won nine
of their last 11 since a 1-4 start. But the Packers
could not overcome turnovers in this one. Green
Bay legendary quarterback Brett Favre finished the
game 22-of-33 passing for 216 yards and a touchdown,
but threw four very costly interceptions.
Minnesota's defense had just 11 interceptions all
season, before collecting four in this game.
The loss was Green Bay's fifth at home this season,
marking the first time since 1991 that the Packers
had a losing home record.
The Vikings, who lost their two regular season
meetings with the Packers by identical 34-31 scores,
came out like gangbusters to quiet the Lambeau Field
crowd. Minnesota scored 17 points in the first 8:54
of the game, and the Packers were never able to
recover.
The Vikings took the opening kickoff and marched
76 yards on just three plays, as Culpepper capped
the drive by hitting Moe Williams out of the backfield
on a 68-yard scoring toss. The extra point gave
Minnesota a 7-0 lead just 1:40 into the contest.
Green Bay went three-and-out on its first possession
of the game, punctuated by a sack of Brett Favre
on 3rd-and-6.
Minnesota took over after a punt, and the Vikings'
offense picked up where it left off on the first
drive. Minnesota stampeded 55 yards in just four
plays, culminated by a Culpepper-to-Moss 20-yard
touchdown pass, and it was a 14-0 game just over
five minutes in.
Before Minnesota's offense had a chance to catch
its breath, it was on the field again, thanks to
a Favre pass that was picked off by Antoine Winfield.
The interception gave Minnesota the ball on its
own 43-yard line, and it led to a Morten Andersen
35-yard field goal that increased the advantage
to 17 points with 6:06 left in the first quarter.
The Packers finally got on the scoreboard on their
next possession, despite narrowly avoiding turnovers
on two different plays. On the second play of the
drive, an attempted Favre handoff to Ahman Green
was fumbled, but Green fell on the ball to keep
the drive alive.
Later on the possession, a pass attempt to Javon
Walker was popped up in the air and appeared to
be intercepted by Joey Thomas, who was then hit
and fumbled. But the play was instead ruled incomplete,
and Ryan Longwell nailed a 43-yard field goal with
2:42 left in the first quarter to make it a 17-3
game.
The Packers avoided another turnover on their next
drive, in the red zone, as Najah Davenport fumbled
inside the five yard line on a sweep to the left.
But Green Bay tight end Bubba Franks was right there
blocking and recovered the fumble in mid-air. Two
plays later, Franks was the recipient on a four-yard
touchdown pass that pulled the Packers within one
score, at 17-10, with 10:24 left in the first half.
The Packers dodged yet another bullet on the Vikings'
next drive. Minnesota drove 56 yards on its next
drive, but Andersen slipped on his attempt at a
27- yard field goal.
Green Bay took over seemingly with momentum, but
Favre was intercepted by Brian Russell, who returned
it 14 yards to the Packers' 28-yard line. Two plays
later, Culpepper took advantage as he hit Nate Burleson
across the middle on a 19-yard touchdown pass. The
connection gave Minnesota a 24-10 lead with 6:33
left in the first half.
The Packers failed in a last minute bid to cut
into the 14-point deficit. Despite being aided by
a pair of third-down penalties that kept their drive
alive, Favre scrambled on a third down play and
appeared close to making the first down marker inside
the five-yard line. But rather than dive for the
first down, he elected to underhand a throw into
the end zone, despite the fact that he was far across
the line of scrimmage. The ensuing penalty cost
Green Bay both yardage and a loss of down, and it
hurt when Longwell missed a 40-yard field goal wide
left to send Minnesota into the locker room with
a 24-10 advantage.
Culpepper was 11-of-15 for 191 yards and three
scoring tosses in the opening 30 minutes, and added
49 yards rushing on three scampers.
"He's tried to carry us to victory a number
of times this season," said Tice, "and
because we didn't give him enough support, we couldn't
win it. He's got that winning edge that you need."
Favre was 10-of-16 passing for 96 yards and a score
in the first half, but threw two crucial interceptions
that led to 10 points by the Vikings.
Favre was intercepted again on Green Bay's opening
drive of the third quarter, but the Vikings could
not take advantage and were forced to punt. For
Favre, it marked just the second time he has thrown
three interceptions in a postseason game. Favre
was picked off six times against the St. Louis Rams
on January 20, 2002.
Green Bay's defense stiffened in the third quarter,
and got the ball back to Favre with 5:50 left in
the stanza. But Favre uncorked his fourth interception
of the game when Brian Williams stepped in front
of a pass intended for Antonio Chatman and the Vikings
took over at their own 40-yard line.
The Vikings were forced to punt, and Green Bay's
offense was able to produce points for the first
time in six drives. Favre was 5-for-5 on the drive,
which culminated in a one-yard scoring run by Davenport.
The extra point made it a 24-17 game with 13:37
left in regulation, and got the Lambeau Field masses
back into the game.
But the Vikings engineered a six-play, 66-yard
drive to answer the Packers' score. After they were
aided by two penalties by Green Bay's Ahmad Carroll
on the drive, Moss hauled in a 34-yard toss from
Culpepper to up Minnesota's margin to 31-17 with
10:18 remaining.
The Vikings regained possession on their own 18-yard
line with 8:21 left in the fourth quarter, and Culpepper
and Co. were able to keep the ball away from Green
Bay before turning it over on downs with 23 seconds
left. The time- consuming drive covered 15 plays
and 7:58 on the game clock, which all but ended
the contest.

Game Summary - Denver at Indianapolis
(Sunday, January 9th)
Final Score: Indianapolis 49, Denver 24
Indianapolis, IN (Wager
On Football - NFL Wagering) - Peyton Manning
shredded Denver's defense for 457 yards passing
and four touchdowns, leading the Indianapolis Colts
to a 49-24 pummeling of the Broncos in an AFC Wild
Card matchup at the RCA Dome.
Manning, who has been superb all year, also ran
for a score and completed 27 of his 33 attempts
with one interception. He scorched defenses in the
regular season for a record 49 touchdown passes
and eclipsed the 4,000-yard passing mark for the
sixth straight season.
"We came out and executed," Manning said.
"That's what we talked about all week. Obviously,
the defense did a good job getting the ball back
for us."
His 457 yards passing was the second most in playoff
history behind Bernie Kosar's 489 yards set in the
1987 post-season with the Cleveland Browns.
Reggie Wayne was Manning's favorite target of the
day and caught 10 passes for a career-high 221 yards
and two touchdowns. The Colts (1-0) will travel
to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA next Sunday for
a divisional-round battle against defending champion
New England. That contest will be a rematch of last
year's AFC title game.
"We're excited about the opportunity,"
Manning said of next Sunday's game against the Patriots.
"They're an excellent team. Going up there
and playing at their place is extremely difficult.
We're just glad to have a chance."
Denver, which suffered a 41-10 loss at Indy in
the opening round of the playoffs last season, fared
no better this time around. Jake Plummer completed
24-of-34 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns
with an INT for the Broncos (0-1), whose last win
in the postseason was during their 1999 championship
run.
"The only way you can stop them is if all
11 guys are playing together," Denver head
coach Mike Shanahan said. "You're not going
to stop them. You're going to slow them down. The
best way to do that is keep them off the field."
The Colts opened the scoring on their second drive
of the game thanks to Manning's two-yard touchdown
pass to James Mungro with 7:23 left in the first
quarter. Indianapolis started from its own 24-yard
line and moved into Denver territory on Manning's
27-yard pass to Wayne.
Pollard later caught a 25-yard strike before Mungro
grabbed Manning's two-yard TD pass on a play fake.
Manning finished 4-of-5 for 68 yards in the nine-play,
76-yard drive.
After the Broncos went three and out on their next
possession, Indianapolis marched 87 yards and took
a 14-0 lead on Edgerrin James' one-yard TD run with
38 seconds left in the quarter. Dallas Clark had
two big catches in the drive, including a great
one-handed reception on first down. Clark ended
with 112 yards and a touchdown on six catches.
Plummer was then picked off by Mike Doss on Denver's
next possession, but Kelly Herndon later intercepted
Manning in the end zone.
The Broncos were then forced to punt and Indianapolis
made it 21-0 a few minutes later when Manning threw
a 19-yard touchdown pass to Clark at the 8:11 mark
of the second quarter. Brandon Stokley's 21-yard
reception highlighted the drive.
Denver cracked the scoring column with 5:19 remaining
before halftime when Jason Elam kicked a 33-yard
field goal, ending a seven-play, 51-yard march.
It was Wayne's world in the first half and the
speedy wideout extended the Indianapolis lead to
28-3 with a 35-yard TD catch less than a minute
later.
"Reggie has been outstanding all year,"
Manning added. "He did a great job running
great routes and doing things with the ball after
the catch. I've been real proud of him all year
long."
With six seconds to go in the first half, Manning
plowed his way into the end zone from a yard out
and the rout was on at 35-3. Harrison had two catches
for 41 yards and Wayne added a reception for 20
more in the drive.
Wayne had 167 yards on eight receptions, while
Manning torched Denver's defense for 360 yards and
three TDs on 21-of-27 passing in the first half.
Plummer completed 6-of-14 passes for 80 yards by
halftime. The Colts also had 395 total yards to
Denver's 103 after 30 minutes of action.
"I wanted to make plays and let my teammates
know that I'm going to be there all day," Wayne
said. "We just jumped out on them so fast."
Denver scored on the first drive of the second
half and pulled within 35-10 thanks to Plummer's
nine-yard touchdown pass to Rod Smith at 9:01. The
TD ended a 10-play, 71-yard march in 5:59.
Plummer and the Broncos shook off the embarrassing
first half and reached the end zone again on Jeb
Putzier's 35-yard touchdown reception with 1:10
to go in the third quarter. Elam's PAT kick was
perfect and made it 35-17. Plummer completed all
seven of his passes for 78 yards in the drive.
Wayne then took the wind out of Denver's sails
with a 43-yard touchdown reception -- his second
of the afternoon. Wayne zig-zagged his way through
the defense and picked up some key blocks for a
42-17 advantage at 12:48 of the fourth quarter.
"We took advantage of their secondary with
Reggie," Colts head coach Tony Dungy said.
"We'll have a good plan for New England and
we'll see what we can do up there."
Tatum Bell's one-yard touchdown run with 7:45 remaining
in the game made it 42-24. The score capped a 10-play
march that covered 57 yards. With 2:02 on the clock,
Dominic Rhodes worked for a two-yard run and a 49-24
cushion.
Game Notes
Both QB's were picked off once...Wayne's 221 yards
receiving were third most in NFL playoff history...Denver
is 16-14 in post-season play, while the Colts are
13-14...The Colts are in the playoffs for the fifth
time in six years...Manning's rushing touchdown
was his first TD on the ground since the 2002 season.
His 360 yards passing in the first half was the

who threw for 338 yards in the first half of the
Giants' 2000 NFC Championship win over Minnesota...James
ended with 63 yards and a score on 18 carries...Harrison
had 50 yards on four receptions, while Stokley added
33 yards on a pair of catches...Putzier had 67 yards

Game Summary - St. Louis at Seattle
(Saturday, January 8th)
Final Score: St. Louis 27, Seattle 20
Seattle, WA (Wager On
Football - NFL Wagering) - Marc Bulger
threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Cam Cleeland with
2:11 left in the game and the St. Louis Rams held
on for an exciting 27-20 win over the Seattle Seahawks
in an NFC Wild Card matchup from Qwest Field.
Bulger threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns with
an interception for the Rams, who posted their third
win of the season versus the Seahawks. St. Louis
(1-0) also recorded its first post-season triumph
since 2001, when it lost to New England in the Super
Bowl.
"Whoever we play it's going to be tough, but
it's nice that we're playing our best football of
the year right now," Bulger said.
Seattle literally was one slip away as wide receiver
Bobby Engram couldn't come up with Matt Hasselbeck's
possible game-tying TD pass in the waning seconds.
The Seahawks haven't posted a post-season win since
defeating the Oakland Raiders, 13-7, in a 1984 AFC
Wild Card game at the Kingdome.
Hasselbeck put up a valiant effort for the NFC
West champions, throwing for 341 yards and two touchdowns
with an interception. Darrell Jackson had a strong
afternoon with 128 yards and a score on 12 receptions
in the loss.
Seattle (0-1) star running back Shaun Alexander
wasn't a factor and ended with just 40 yards on
15 carries and 25 yards on one reception. Alexander,
though, was shaken up in the second quarter with
a wrist injury but quickly returned to the game.
The St. Louis defense forced the Seahawks to punt
late in the game, giving Bulger and Co. the ball
from their own 24-yard line with less than six minutes
left.
Two running plays by Marshall Faulk set up 3rd-and-2
from the 32-yard line. Bulger then found Shaun McDonald
for a 31-yard gain down the right sideline and Kevin
Curtis hauled in a 13-yard dart.
Faulk then rumbled for four and three yards, respectively,
before Bulger zipped a 17-yard touchdown pass to
Cleeland for a 27-20 lead with 2:11 left.
"We're coming around," Rams head coach
Mike Martz said. "We really are developing
and maturing as a team."
Hasselbeck then led a strong Seattle drive to end
the game. Hasselbeck threw a 19-yard pass to tight
end Itula Mili and later found Jackson for a 20-yard
completion. Mili then caught a 14-yard pass before
Hasselbeck was sacked. Mili ended with 98 yards
on six catches.
Hasselbeck then fired an incomplete pass to Jackson
before watching one fall to the ground in an attempt
to Engram. Seattle was then faced with 4th-and-4
and Hasselbeck had one last chance. He juked his
way out of the pocket and tried firing a tight spiral
to Engram. The ball then glanced off Engram's chest
and to the ground with 21 seconds left, and the
Seahawks suffered their sixth consecutive loss in
the playoffs, which ties an NFL record.
"We took one more step from last year, believe
it or not," Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren
said. "One of these years we're going to win
a playoff game and take that next step. I mean that."
Seattle lost in overtime to the Green Bay Packers
last season at Lambeau Field.
The Rams, who will travel to Philadelphia or Atlanta
for next week's divisional round, scored on the
opening drive of the game when Bulger fired a 15-yard
TD pass to Torry Holt at 11:33. The reception was
challenged but the ruling on the field stood. Holt
highlighted the six-play, 75-yard march with a 52-yard
catch. Holt ended with 108 yards and a score on
six catches.
After each team exchanged interceptions and punts,
the Seahawks cracked the scoreboard on Josh Brown's
47-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 2:05 remaining
in the first quarter.
St. Louis answered with Faulk's one-yard touchdown
run at the 13:32 mark of the second quarter. Bulger's
50-yard completion to Curtis set up the Rams' offense
deep in Seattle territory and Faulk busted through
the line moments later for a 14-3 advantage. Curtis
had 107 yards on four catches.
"We know we're a good team," Bulger added.
"We have talent, but we've made a lot of mistakes
this year. Seattle played us good but fortunately
we've been making plays the last three weeks when
we've had to."
The Rams had an interception negated later in the
quarter because of a 15-yard facemask penalty and
Hasselbeck made them pay. He fired a 19-yard touchdown
pass to Engram on the first play after the foul
and pulled the Seahawks within 14-10. The score
ended a nine-play, 84-yard drive.
Hasselbeck orchestrated a 14-play, 64-yard march
that resulted in a 30-yard field goal by Brown at
8:52 of the third quarter. The boot easily split
the uprights and pulled Seattle within 14-13. Koren
Robinson's 15-yard grab on 3rd-and-13 keyed the
drive that took 6:08 off the clock.
St. Louis settled for a field goal on its next
possession, as Jeff Wilkins kicked a 38-yarder to
extend the lead to 17-13 with 2:35 left. Bulger
and Holt hooked up twice on third down to keep the
chains moving and set up the Rams in decent field
position.
The scoring trend continued and the Seahawks took
a 20-17 lead on its next possession thanks to a
23-yard touchdown catch by Jackson. Hasselbeck fired
a bullet to Jackson on a crossing route and the
speedy wideout hustled into the end zone at 13:43
of the fourth quarter. Hasselbeck completed all
five of his passes for 75 yards, including an 11-yard
strike to Jackson on 3rd-and-4.
Wilkins was called on again for St. Louis and the
veteran placekicker chipped a 27-yard field goal
through the uprights to knot the score at 20 apiece.
Stephen Jackson contributed a four-yard run on 3rd-and-2
and Wilkins capped the 11-play drive that covered
60 yards.
Game Notes
Saturday's contest was the first-ever playoff meeting
between both franchises...Martz improved to 6-2
in his career against Seattle...The last time the
Seahawks defeated St. Louis was a 2003 victory at
home...Holmgren is 7-7 in his career versus the
Rams. He was 5-1 while with Green Bay...St. Louis
is 19-23 in the playoffs, while the Seahawks are
3-7...Bulger was 18-of-32 passing, while Hasselbeck
completed 27 of his 43 attempts...Faulk had 55 yards
on 13 carries... St. Louis is the first 8-8 team
to win in the playoffs.

Summary - NY Jets at San Diego
(Saturday, January 8th)
Final Score: NY Jets 20, San Diego 17 (OT)
San Diego, CA (Wager On
Football - NFL Wagering) - Doug Brien's
28-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining
in overtime gave the New York Jets a thrilling 20-17
victory over San Diego in a rainy first-round playoff
game Saturday night.
Brien's kick ended a 60-yard drive and followed
a 40-yard miss by rookie Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding
at the other end.
Kaeding's miss was shocking for the Qualcomm Stadium
crowd, which had seen their team force a tie in
the final seconds of regulation.
New York had the game all but won after a defensive
stand inside the two-yard line with just seconds
remaining in the fourth quarter, but linebacker
Eric Barton was whistled for a roughing-the-passer
penalty when he drove Drew Brees to the ground with
a right forearm on fourth down.
"A foul's a foul," Jets head coach Herman
Edwards said. "I don't think he did anything
on purpose."
The San Diego crowd, which had grown silent after
Brees' desperate pass into the end zone was knocked
down, erupted when the call was made.
And they got louder when Brees found Antonio Gates
in the end zone for a one- yard touchdown pass on
the next play, tying the game at 17-17 with just
11 seconds on the clock.
Both teams went three-and-out on their first overtime
possession, and Kaeding's miss came after Brees
orchestrated a 48-yard drive on San Diego's second
possession in the extra period. Brees completed
four passes for 31 yards before giving way to his
rookie kicker.
But Kaeding's kick from the right hash remained
right all the way.
"You just kind of hope for the best, but you
have to be ready if something like that happens,"
Brees said. "I was confident that he was going
to make it."
Chad Pennington took over and led the Jets downfield
with relative ease, completing an 18-yard pass to
Santana Moss on second down that was reviewed and
upheld. With the Jets now in San Diego territory,
LaMont Jordan broke loose for a 19-yard run down
the left sideline three plays later.
Two more Jordan rushes set up Brien, whose first
kick was good but moot after a late timeout called
by San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer. Brien wasn't
fazed, and his second try was down the middle for
the win.
"It's sad that someone has to lose, but we
were fortunate to win," said Edwards. "For
either team it would have been a tough loss."
Pennington ended 23-of-33 for 279 yards and two
touchdowns for the Jets, who picked up their first
playoff victory on the road since a 17-14 win over
the L.A. Raiders on January 15, 1983.
Curtis Martin had 66 yards rushing on 18 carries in
the win, and added four catches for 47 yards. Santana
Moss led all receivers with 100 yards and a touchdown
on four catches.
Brees was 31-of-42 passing for 319 yards, with
two touchdowns and an interception, in San Diego's
first home playoff game in 11 years.
LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 80 yards on 26 carries
in the win, and added 53 yards on nine catches.
Eric Parker led the Chargers with 93 yards on nine
catches and Keenan McCardell caught four passes
for 50 yards -- including a 27-yard touchdown grab
that opened the scoring in the second quarter.
Gates caught six passes for 89 yards. He set up
San Diego's late-game touchdown with a 44-yard catch,
turning a 10-yard play into a big gain by breaking
tackles and bounding upfield.

The Chargers lost for just the second time in their
last 11 games. They had won seven straight games
at Qualcomm since a 34-28 loss to the Jets in their
home opener on September 19.
"As disappointing as this is -- and it will
linger for a long time -- nobody thought we would
be here this season, and that's the kind of thing
we will build on," said Schottenheimer, the
Associated Press Coach of the Year.
New York took a 14-7 lead on its first drive of
the second half when Pennington found Moss behind
two defenders in the end zone for a 47-yard touchdown
pass.
The Jets extended their lead to 17-7 on Brien's
42-yard field goal with 1:23 remaining in the third
quarter.
Kaeding ended the ensuing drive with a 35-yard
field goal to make it 17-10 with 10:43 left in the
game.
Brien missed his first field goal try of the game,
a 33-yard attempt that drifted wide-right after
the Jets opened the game with a 5 1/2-minute drive.
McCardell's 26-yard touchdown reception in the
back of the end zone opened the scoring with 9:26
remaining in the second quarter. The catch capped
a 13-play, 88-yard drive and was originally ruled
incomplete before replays determined McCardell dragged
his right foot before going out of bounds.
New York tied the game just under seven minutes
later on Anthony Becht's 13- yard TD catch at 2:54.
Pennington beat a blitz on the play by finding his
wide-open tight end in the flat, and Becht ran untouched
into the end zone.
The Jets only needed 37 yards for the score after
Schottenheimer was whistled for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike
conduct penalty for running onto the field and arguing
that his punter had been roughed.
"I blew a fuse and it's unforgivable that
I'd do that," the Chargers coach acknowledged.
Game Notes
Jets defensive end John Abraham was deactivated
for the game despite hopes that he might return
after missing a month with a sprained right knee.
Wide receiver Wayne Chrebet (concussion) was also
inactive for New York...Schottenheimer became the
first head coach in NFL history to coach four overtime
playoff games. He is now 2-2 in those games...This
was the first playoff meeting ever between these
teams...Brees didn't throw an incomplete pass until
there was just 5:21 remaining in the first half...The
Jets were making a return to the postseason following
a one-year hiatus. They made the playoffs despite
losing three of their final four games in the regular
