filled in for an injured Patrick Ramsey to help Washington
past Chicago, 9-7, in the season opener for both teams
at FedEx Field. Clinton Portis was a workhorse in
the defensive battle, rushing for 121 yards on 21
carries for the Redskins (1-0), who have won their
last four season openers. Santana Moss, acquired from
the Jets in the offseason, had 96 yards on four catches.
Rookie quarterback Kyle Orton threw for 141 yards
on 15-of-28 passing for the Bears (0-1), but fumbled
on Chicago's last drive of the game. Newly- acquired
wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad had 59 yards on six
receptions for Chicago, which hasn't won a season-opening
game since the 2002 campaign.

- John Carney booted a 47-yard field goal with three
seconds remaining, as the New Orleans Saints posted
an emotional win in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
by defeating the Carolina Panthers, 23-20, in the
season-opener for both teams at Bank of America Stadium.
Aaron Brooks was solid as he went 18-of-24 for 192
yards for the Saints (1-0), who won their season-opener
for the first time since 2002. Deuce McAllister rushed
for 64 yards and two touchdowns, while Ernie Conwell
added six catches for 71 yards for New Orleans. Jake
Delhomme was 19-of-31 for 212 yards with a touchdown
and two interceptions for the Panthers (0-1), who
lost to New Orleans for just the second time in the
last six meetings.

- Carson Palmer went 26-of-34 for 280 yards with a
pair of touchdowns and an interception, as Cincinnati
handed Romeo Crennel a loss in his head coaching debut
by posting a 27-13 win over Cleveland in the season
opener for both teams at Paul Brown Stadium. Rudi
Johnson had 126 rushing yards and a touchdown on 26
carries while Chad Johnson contributed nine catches
for 91 yards for the Bengals (1-0), who opened the
season with a win for the first time since 2001. Trent
Dilfer ended 26-of-43 for 278 yards with a touchdown
and two interceptions for the Browns (0-1), who have
lost of six of their seven season-opening games since
the team returned to the NFL as an expansion team
in 1999.

while Priest Holmes added 85 yards on the ground and
another score to lead the Kansas City Chiefs past
the New York Jets, 27-7, in the season opener for
both teams at Arrowhead Stadium. Trent Green was 15-of-26
for 200 yards and an interception for the Chiefs (1-0),
who won for just the second time in their last six
home openers. Kansas City forced seven fumbles, recovering
two. Chad Pennington, playing his first game since
offseason shoulder surgery, threw for 264 yards, but
fumbled six times - losing two of them - for New York
(0-1), which started a season with a loss for the
second time in its last three years.

- Brian Griese threw a pair of touchdown passes to
Alex Smith and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the
Minnesota Vikings, 24-13, in the season-opener for
both teams at the Metrodome. Griese finished 18-of-29
for 213 yards for the Bucs (1-0), who held off the
Vikings late in the game. Tampa Bay rookie running
back Carnell Williams ended with 148 yards and a touchdown
on 27 carries. A bulk of his yards came on a 71-yard
touchdown run with 1:23 remaining that put the game
out of reach. Daunte Culpepper turned the ball over
five times, throwing three picks and losing two fumbles,
for the Vikings (0-1), who began the post-Randy Moss
era in disappointing fashion. Culpepper finished 22-of-33
for 233 yards, while Minnesota's leading receiver
was Nate Burleson with just 45 yards on three catches.

- Gus Frerotte threw for 275 yards with a pair of
touchdowns, leading the Miami Dolphins to a surprisingly-easy
34-10 win over the Denver Broncos in the season opener
for both at Dolphins Stadium. Marty Booker caught
five passes for 104 yards, including a 60-yard score
that sealed the game late, as the Dolphins (1-0) won
an opener for the first time in three years. Miami
was coming off a dismal 4-12 season in 2004 and gave
Nick Saban a win in his NFL head coaching debut. The
34 points scored were the most for the club since
a 40-21 win at Dallas on November 27, 2003. Denver
quarterback Jake Plummer struggled all game and threw
for 251 yards with a score and two interceptions.
The Broncos (0-1) also managed only 70 yards on the
ground and had a four-game winning streak on opening
day halted.

yards and two touchdowns to lead the Jacksonville
Jaguars past the Seattle Seahawks, 26-14, in the season-opener
for both teams at Alltel Stadium. Jimmy Smith caught
seven passes for 130 yards with two touchdowns for
the Jaguars (1-0), who forced five turnovers and improved
to 8-3 all-time in season openers. Their .727 winning
percentage on opening day is the best in the NFL.
Matt Hasselbeck completed 21-of-37 passes for 246
yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions
for the Seahawks (0-1), who started the year with
a loss for the 10th time in their 30 years of existence.

opening day, exploding for 161 yards and a touchdown,
to lead the Steelers past the Tennessee Titans 34-7
at Heinz Field. Rookie tight end Heath Miller, Parker
and Verron Haynes all scored their first NFL touchdowns
for the Steelers (1-0), who have now won their last
three season openers. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger
improved to 15-0 in the regular season, throwing for
218 yards and a pair of touchdowns before exiting
late in the contest. He left with a perfect 158.3
passer rating. Steve McNair finished 18- of-26 for
219 yards with a touchdown and an interception for
the Titans (0-1), who committed three turnovers.

- J.P. Losman threw for 170 yards with a touchdown
in his first NFL start and Rian Lindell kicked five
field goals, as the Buffalo Bills posted a 22-7 victory
over the Houston Texans in the opener for both teams
at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Losman completed 17-of-28
passes without an interception and Willis McGahee
ran for 117 yards on 22 carries for the Bills (1-0),
who won an opener for the second time in three years.
David Carr ran for Houston's only touchdown and was
dismal throwing the ball, completing just 9-of-21
passes for 70 yards with three interceptions. The
Texans (0-1) managed only 12 first downs and 120 total
yards in losing an opener for the second straight
year after winning their first two.

- Tim Rattay threw two first-half touchdown passes
and San Francisco held off St. Louis 28-25 to give
Mike Nolan a successful head coaching debut. Rattay,
who completed 11-of-16 passes for 165 yards, was one
of a few heroes for the 49ers (1-0), who managed just
two overall wins a season ago. Fred Amey returned
a punt 75 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter,
while Mike Adams preserved the victory after intercepting
Marc Bulger with 52 seconds to play and the Rams in
San Francisco territory. Bulger finished with 362
yards on 34-of-56 passing and a pair of scores for
St. Louis (0-1), which held a 405-217 advantage in
total yards but struggled to put the ball in the end
zone. Jeff Wilkins kicked four field goals in the
setback.

35 second-half points. Brandon Jacobs added 39 yards

an interception. Larry Fitzgerald had 155 yards and
a touchdown on 13 catches for the Cardinals (0-1),
who have dropped six straight season openers and 13
of their last 14 to start a season.

quarter, as the Detroit Lions opened their season
with a 17-3 win over Brett Favre and the Green Bay
Packers at Ford Field. Favre completed 27-of-44 passes
for 201 yards, but was picked off twice and also coughed
up the ball once, as Green Bay (0-1) lost for just
the second time in the last 10 meetings against the
Lions (1-0).Harrington connected on 15-of-28 passes
and Kevin Jones rushed 25 times for 87 yards for Detroit.
Lions head coach Steve Mariucci became the first Detroit
head coach to win his first three season-openers.

- Drew Bledsoe threw two touchdown passes to Keyshawn
Johnson, including a two-yard strike with 3:06 left
in the fourth quarter, and Aaron Glenn intercepted
a pass in the end zone as time was running out, as
Dallas edged San Diego, 28-24, in the season-opener
for both teams at Qualcomm Stadium. Bledsoe, who was
signed by the Cowboys in the offseason, had spent
the past three seasons with Buffalo before being released
following the 2004 campaign. In his Dallas debut,
he ended 18-of-24 for 226 yards with three touchdowns
for the Cowboys (1-0), who won the opening game of
the season for the first time since 2002. Drew Brees
was 18-of-35 for 209 yards with two touchdowns and
two interceptions, including one in the final seconds,
for the Chargers (0-1), who have dropped three straight
season- openers.

- Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes in the
third quarter as Indianapolis cruised to a 24-7 season-opening
victory over Baltimore at M&T Bank Stadium. Manning,
who set the NFL's single-season record with 49 touchdown
throws last season, rebounded from an inconsistent
first half to finish with 254 yards while completing
21-of-36 attempts. His 28-yard scoring strike to Marvin
Harrison with 8:43 remaining in the third quarter
gave the Colts (1-0) a 10-0 lead. Less than four minutes
later, Manning connected with tight end Ben Utecht
for a 26-yard touchdown which essentially sealed the
win. The Ravens (0-1), on the other hand, had a night
to forget. Baltimore turned the ball over four times,
missed three field goals, and lost starting quarterback
Kyle Boller for most of the second half. Boller hyperextended
his big right toe after being sacked by Larry Triplett
with around five minutes to go in the third quarter
and did not return.
