If Favre and company can
get past the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial
Field on Monday night, they'll be able to square
their '06 record at 2-2.
However, with all apologies
to the Lions, the Packers haven't shown they can
compete with quality teams so far this season.
In Week 1 Green Bay was blanked 26-0 by the Chicago
Bears, and they followed up that loss with a 34-27
defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Saints
in Week 2. The final score in their victory over
the Lions was 31-24.
Do the Eagles qualify as
a quality team? Well, they're 2-1 on the year
(and 2-1 against-the-spread as well), and they
entered Week 5 in first place in the NFC East
division. But Philadelphia's two wins came against
league doormats Houston (24-10 in Week 1) and
San Francisco (38-24 in Week 3). Their loss came
in Week 2 against the New York Giants, when they
gave up 17 points in the final quarter and eventually
lost 30-24 in OT.
So Philadelphia still has
something to prove as well, although Donovan McNabb
has been effective so far this season. The quarterback
threw for 314, 350, and 296 yards over the team's
first three contests, with seven touchdown strikes
and just a single INT.
Favre has been pretty good
as well - if you don't look at his Week 1 numbers.
The Packers QB went just 15-of-29 for 170 yards
passing against the tough Bears, with no TD strikes
and two interceptions. However, Favre has bounced
back with two straight games of 340 yards in the
air, throwing six TD passes and getting picked
off just once.
Oddsmakers and bettors, though,
haven't been giving the Packers much of a shot
on Monday night. Philadelphia is currently pegged
as a huge 11.5-point home favorite, with the total
going from an opening 45.5 points to a current
48.5 points. The Eagles are 2-1 ATS and 2-1 OU
so far in 2006, while the Packers are 1-2 ATS
and 2-1 OU this season.
The Eagles won the meeting
between these teams last season, picking up a
19-14 victory at home in November. Philadelphia
had been favored by 4 points in that contest,
while the combined score fell UNDER the posted
total (41.5). The previous season the Eagles pounded
Green Bay 47-17 at home, covering the spread and
creating an OVER.
On the injury front, the
Eagles have both RB Brian Westbrook (knee) and
WR Donte Stallworth (hamstring) listed as questionable
for this game. Westbrook returned to practice
on Saturday, and his swollen knee shouldn't keep
him off the field on Monday. Stallworth is expected
to play too, but is more of a game-time decision.
For the Packers RB Ahman Green (rib) was listed
as probable, but he is now considered questionable.

After playing on Monday night

Eagles, meanwhile, remain in Philadelphia for
their Week 5 contest, and they will play host
to Terrell Owens and the Dallas Cowboys.
