Watching Daunte Culpepper
complete only 18-of-37 pass attempts and get intercepted
twice for the Dolphins on Thursday night had to
make the Vikings feel a bit better about turning
over the starting QB job to Brad Johnson this
season. Minnesota almost made the playoffs after
turning to Johnson last year, and they're hoping
his strong run can continue. Johnson's never been
flashy, but he showed last season he could do
the job.
Mark Brunell isn't flashy
either, but he'll get the call as the Redskins'
starting QB this season. Washington went 10-6
and slipped into the playoffs last year, but they'll
be in tough to duplicate that feat in a division
with the Giants, Cowboys, and Eagles. And no,
the preseason doesn't count for anything, but
the Redskins' dismal performance over the exhibition
slate was concerning. Also concerning? Clinton
Portis' shoulder injury.
Bettors and oddsmakers like
the Redskins' chances of starting the season with
a 1-0 record. Washington opened as a 6-point home
favorite in this contest, a line which has since
fallen to 4 points in the Redskins' favor (likely
due to Portis' injury). The game's total opened
at 37 points, but it also slipped over the course
of the week (to 35 points).
Here is the official
Week 1 injury report for the Vikings:
Mewelde Moore RB Probable
Week 1 (knee)
Fred Smoot CB Probable Week 1 (ribs)
Here is the official
Week 1 injury report for the Redskins:
Shawn Springs CB Doubtful Week 1 (abdomen)
Clinton Portis RB Questionable Week 1 (shoulder)
Renaldo Wynn DE Probable Week 1 (ankle)
The Vikings have another
tough matchup in Week 2, as they play host to
the Carolina Panthers at The Metrodome. The Redskins
have a road game at rival Dallas next week.

The Chargers parted ways
with former starting QB Drew Brees in the offseason,
which means San Diego's fortunes are now in the
hands of Philip Rivers. The young QB was inconsistent
in the preseason, but he'll need to get it together
quickly if the Chargers hope to make it into the
AFC playoffs. At the very least he'll still be
able to hand off to RB LaDainian Tomlinson and
toss short passes to TE Antonio Gates to move
the ball.
Oakland, on the other hand,
is hoping to utilize the deep ball in their offense,
with new starting quarterback Aaron Brooks tossing
long to Randy Moss. Only one half of that combination
is exciting for Raiders fans, with Brooks still
a big-time question mark after years of mediocrity
in New Orleans. Oakland head coach Art Shell has
been away from the league for quite awhile, and
it remains to be seen whether he can get the job
done.
The Chargers were set as
2.5-point road favorites on the opening line for
this contest, but that line has increased to 3
points over the course of the week. The game's
total opened at 44 points, and it has dropped
only slightly (to 43 points) since being posted.
Here is the official
Week 1 injury report for the Chargers:
Aaron Shea TE Doubtful Week
1 (back)
Leander Jordan T Questionable Week 1 (neck)
Ryan Krause TE Questionable Week 1 (hamstring)
Cletis Gordon CB Probable Week 1 (wrist)
Marcus McNeill T Probable Week 1 (hand)
Here is the official
Week 1 injury report for the Raiders:
Jake Grove C Doubtful Week
1 (shoulder)
John Madsen TE Doubtful Week 1 (ankle)
Lance Johnstone DE Questionable Week 1 (shin)
James Adkisson TE Probable Week 1 (knee)
Alvis Whitted WR Probable Week 1 (groin)
The Raiders go on the road for their Week 2 matchup,
as they travel to the east coast to play the Baltimore
Ravens. The Chargers play host to the Tennessee
Titans next week.
