Super
bowl Lines: Bet Now: Denver Broncos 13:8
With Indianapolis’ stunning
home loss to Pittsburgh, Denver is now the slight
favorite to win the Super Bowl. The Broncos
are 9-0 at home this year, and get to play the
Steelers this weekend in Denver.
If they make it to the Super
Bowl, Mike Shanahan brings the experience of
a coach that has already won two championships.
Those, of course, were with quarterback John
Elway at the helm and running back Terrell Davis
playing at a Hall of Fame level. Still, Shanahan
rarely gets out-coached, and he is the best
offensive mind of any of the coaches left, and
that includes Seattle’s Mike Holmgren.
The one downside to Denver’s
chances is how they played against New England.
They were not able to run the ball effectively,
which is what their whole offense is based on.
If New England didn’t turn the ball over
five times, it would be the Patriots who would
be hosting Pittsburgh this week, and being a
big favorite to win the Super Bowl. The Broncos
must reestablish their running game on Sunday.
Super
bowl Lines: Bet Now: Pittsburgh Steelers 5:2
The Pittsburgh Steelers have
had a number of disappointing playoff losses
over the last few years. In both 2001 and 2004,
they lost at home to New England in the AFC
championship game. In the divisional round in
2003, they lost a 34-31 heartbreaker at Tennessee
in overtime.
Overall, the Steelers are 1-5
in AFC championship games under Coach Bill Cowher.
That is not a good way to endear yourself to
the fans. The only way for Cowher to win over
Steelers fans for life is to win a Super Bowl.
Pittsburgh won four championships
during the Chuck Noll dynasty, and now they
are trying to win one “for the thumb”.
After beating Indianapolis last
week, the Steelers became the first No. 6 seed
to advance to a conference championship game
since the current playoff format was adopted
in 1990. Since Cowher has not had much success
winning AFC championship games at home, perhaps
the road will be kinder.
