Jerome Bettis, welcome home to
Detroit. Thanks to a convincing 34-17 win at
Denver, the Steelers will play in Super Bowl
XL (40) in Bettis’ hometown. Does that
mean that the network can stop showing pictures
of Bettis’ parents who travel to every
game? Let’s hope so.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger
was 21-29 in the game for 275 yards, two touchdowns,
and no interceptions. It is hard to believe
that he is only in his second year, as he really
looks comfortable on the big stage, and his
teammates sense that.
On the other side of the coin
sits Denver quarterback Jake Plummer. Plummer
had a fantastic year, but there wasn’t
a Denver fan alive who felt 100% confidant in
his “big game” ability. Plummer’s
two turnovers in the first half set the stage
for Pittsburgh to go up 24-3 at the break. That
was a deficit that Denver never had a chance
to recover from.
Kudos also go to Pittsburgh coach
Bill Cowher. Most of the pundits, including
myself, put a checkmark next to Mike Shanahan’s
name in the coaching match-up. Cowher answered
all his critics, at least temporarily, and it
is Shanahan who has to answer how his team lost
an AFC championship game at home.
Pittsburgh also became the first
team since the 1985 Patriots to win three road
games on the way to the Super Bowl.
The Steelers’ opponent
in the World’s biggest sporting event
is Seattle. The Seahawks easily dispatched Carolina
34-14, in a game that was never in doubt. They
will now make their first Super Bowl appearance
in their 30 year history.
Seattle dominated this game in
the first half, 20-7. Total yardage at the mid-way
point was 252-62, and a 15-3 advantage on first
downs. If it wasn’t for a Steve Smith
punt return for a touchdown, then it could easily
have been almost a three touchdown margin.
Carolina lost running back Nick
Goings in the first quarter with an injury,
and they only gained 36 rushing yards all game.
Goings’ departure stung, considering that
DeShaun Foster was lost for the season last
week. The credit though has to go to the Seattle
run defense who smothered the Panthers all game
long.
On offense, Seattle quarterback
Matt Hasselbeck didn’t put up huge numbers,
but he completely outplayed his counterpart,
Jake Delhomme. Hasselbeck threw no interceptions
versus three for Delhomme, so maybe Hasselbeck
will now be the one with the big game reputation.
