The early odds for the Super
Bowl are out, with Pittsburgh favored by 4 points.
For those of you who are looking for more information
before making their selection, VIPsports Edge
will be doing 13 straight days of Super Bowl
coverage leading up to February 5th.
Our first look at the big game
centers around the quarterback battle.
Pittsburgh quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger
is only in his second year in the league, and
at just 23 years-old, he is trying to become
the youngest signal caller to ever win the Super
Bowl.
Roethlisberger’s brief
career has been nothing short of remarkable.
Last season, he went 15-0 as a starter before
losing to New England in the AFC championship
game. This year, he is 12-3 as a starter, making
him 27-4 lifetime.
The one trait that makes Roethlisberger
stand out is his confidence. Even after the
playoff loss to New England, in which he played
terrible, Roethlisberger calmly pronounced that
he would learn from his mistakes and be improved
this year.
In Pittsburgh’s three road
playoff wins this year, he has quarterback ratings
of 148, 95, and 125, while playing in two of
the toughest venues in the NFL, Indianapolis
and Denver. If Pittsburgh wins the Super Bowl,
Roethlisberger will be considered a bigger,
stronger, and faster version of Tom Brady.
Not bad for a player who had
quarterbacks, Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers
selected ahead of him in the 2004 draft. Thinks
both of those teams would like a do-over right
now?
Unlike “Big Ben”,
Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck didn’t
have NFL stardom written all over him. Sure,
he is the son of former Patriots’ tight
end, Don Hasselbeck, who was a solid player
in the league for nine years. Unfortunately,
that doesn’t give you the same recognition
and publicity as being Archie Manning’s
son for example.
Hasselbeck was a good, but not
great, quarterback at Boston College. He was
drafted by the Packers in the 6th round in 1998,
and few people thought that he would be more
than a career backup.
He spent one year on the practice
squad, and two years as Brett Favre’s
backup, throwing a total of just 29 passes.
Current Seahawks’ coach, Mike Holmgren
was the Green Bay coach in 1998, and he saw
enough in practice to acquire him in a 2001
pre-draft trade.
After sharing snaps with Trent
Dilfer in 2002, Hasselbeck got the full-time
gig in 2003. For the last two seasons though,
he seemed more like a “fantasy football”
quarterback, someone who put up big numbers,
but was not necessarily championship caliber.
That has changed this year, with a career-high
quarterback rating of 98.2 and two very good
playoff performances.
With his helmet off, Hasselbeck
looks like a 40 year old accountant with 2.5
kids. The reality is that he is 6.5 years older
than Roethlisberger, and is in the prime of
his career. “Big Ben” is only going
to get better for the next few years, a scary
thought for the rest of the AFC.
When asked to give the
advantage between these two quarterbacks, Roethlisberger
gets the slight edge. Hasselbeck though, has
been proving his doubters wrong for the last
eight years, so there is no saying it can’t
continue for one more game.
