VIPsports Edge coverage of Super
Bowl XL continues today with a closer look at
each team's key questions. Check back with us
every day as we continue reporting on the World’s
biggest sporting event.
Seattle and Pittsburgh both had
great seasons and deserve to be where they are.
That said, there are still some key questions
for each team that will help determine who comes
out on top this Sunday.
Ben Roethlisberger’s
age
Roethlisberger is the second
youngest quarterback to play in the Super Bowl
after Miami’s Dan Marino. He will turn
24 on March 2nd. Roethlisberger has been unflappable
in this year’s playoffs, and it looks
like he is immune to pressure.
Or course, we thought the same
thing heading into last year’s AFC championship
game, and Roethlisberger was completely befuddled
by New England. There is no indication that
will happen on Sunday, but you never know how
such a young player will respond in the Super
Bowl.
Pittsburgh as a favorite
Pittsburgh has done a tremendous
job winning three straight road playoff games
to make it to the Super Bowl. Except for the
Cincinnati game though, they were playing as
the underdog and were not facing high expectations.
Coach Bill Cowher has had a lot
of experience losing AFC championship games
as the favorite. Sometimes, it is easier to
be the underdog as the players and coaches are
looser, and the team feels they are playing
with the “house money”.
Shaun Alexander’s toughness
Alexander ran for almost 1,900
yards this year, earning MVP honors along the
way. Despite all the accolades and hardware,
there is a big question as to how much success
Alexander will have against a physical Steelers’
run defense.
Alexander is going to take a
lot of big hits, especially from Steelers’
safety, Troy Polamalu who will be playing in
the box to stop him. Alexander needs to prove
that he is tough enough to withstand the punishment
and continue to run tough up the middle.
Seattle as a road team
Seattle earned the number one
seed in the NFC conference, which gave them
home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The Seahawks used that advantage in wins over
Washington and Carolina, the latter being a
blowout that few expected.
Now, Seattle has to play away
from the comfy confines of Qwest Field. Not
only that, but the Steelers should have a sizable
home field advantage in Detroit due to the proximity
to Pittsburgh, and their rabid fan base.
