Odds in parenthesis are
to win the SEC conference.
Florida
(7:5) quarterback, Chris Leak struggled
in coach Urban Meyer’s spread offense last
year. All parties believe that he will improve
this year, but it could be trying to fit a square
peg into a round hole. Leak will have very good
receivers, but he is dealing with a running game
and offensive line that has question marks. The
defense should again be very good, but an extremely
tough schedule makes these odds a little daunting.
Auburn
(5:2) returns quarterback Brandon Cox,
and running back Kenny Irons. The latter of which
is rated among the best in the country. Cox’
top three receivers are all gone to graduation,
but plenty of talent remains. The defense is going
to be good, but how good depends on the secondary.
Finally, the schedule is extremely favorable with
LSU, Florida and Georgia all being played at home.
LSU
(4:1) went 11-2 last year including a 40-3
romp over Miami in the Peach Bowl. Junior, Matt
Flynn was the quarterback for that game, but JaMarcus
Russell returns as the starter. The running back
situation would be clearer if Alley Broussard
was fully recovered from his knee injury. The
offensive line and the defensive front seven were
both hit hard by departures. Led by safety, LaRon
Landry, the secondary is one of the best in the
nation.
Georgia (8:1)
has been known for their quarterbacks in recent
years with David Greene and D.J. Shockley. This
year, the starter out of the gate is senior, Joe
Tereshinski. Terenshinki got some key playing
time last year, but there is no guarantee that
he keeps the job. The defense returns two very
good pass rushers in Quentin Moses and Charles
Johnson. The linebackers are talented, but injury
ridden, and the secondary needs to be revamped.
Georgia may be the 4th ranked team in the SEC,
but there is a sizable drop-off after the first
three.
Sleeper Selection
Arkansas (25:1) is one of
a few teams that could surprise in the conference.
The Razorbacks went just 4-7 last year, although
their last three losses versus Georgia, South
Carolina and LSU were by a total of nine points.
Led by running backs, Darren
McFadden and Felix Jones, Arkansas has one of
the best running attacks in the nation. However,
McFadden is likely to miss the season opener against
USC with a toe injury. Quarterback, Casey Dick
will also miss the USC game with a back problem.
Robert Johnson will be his replacement.
On defense, the team returns
nine starters to a unit that really improved as
the season wore on. The defense should be the
strength of the team unless the passing game proves
that it can keep the offense balanced. If the
aerial attack gets going by the start of the SEC
season, then look out for the Razorbacks.
