Odds in parenthesis are
to win the Pac 10 conference.
Southern
California (4:9). No Reggie Bush, no Matt
Leinart, no problem. That is the mantra of the
coaching staff and who can blame them with the
talent base they have built. Junior, John David
Booty replaces Leinart, although Mark Sanchez
is close behind, and the receivers are perhaps
the best unit in the country. The defense underachieved
in 2005, ranking 48th in the nation in yards allowed.
Even with lots of defections, the defense should
be improved this season.
California
(9:2) finished 8-4 last season, but has
built a team that can compete with USC this year.
It all starts with a running game that has two
stalwarts in Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett.
The defense returns a good portion of starters,
and while they gave up a lot of yards last year,
they were stingy with points. There is some uncertainty
at the quarterback position, but the gap between
USC and Cal is not as big as these odds suggest.
Oregon
(8:1) may be most known for having the
ugliest uniforms in college football, but they
are also a very good team. Their spread offense
causes a lot of problems for opposing defenses,
although they will have to do it without quarterback
Kellen Clemens. Junior signal caller, Dennis Dixon
gets the nod now. The defense will miss Haloti
Ngata, but they are strong at linebacker and the
defense could be better than expected.
UCLA
(10:1) went 10-2 last season, but their
two losses to Arizona and USC were by a combined
score of 118-33. There is a lot turnover at the
skill positions, but quarterback Ben Olson is
ready to take over and this team will put up points.
The UCLA defense was flat-out horrible last year,
giving up an average of 468 yards. There were
some good offensive teams in the PAC-10, but that
statistic speaks for itself. All in all, UCLA
does not look like a good value.
Sleeper Selection
Arizona
State (12:1) has already been making big
news this pre-season with their quarterback situation.
Sophomore, Rudy Carpenter has been named the starter,
and that means that Senior, Sam Keller has decided
to transfer for greener pastures.
While this hurts the Sun
Devils' depth, their offense should still be one
of the best in the country. When you talk about
ASU’s defense, you almost have to use that
term loosely. Their 45-40 victory against Rutgers
in the Insight Bowl last year was truly a case
of whoever had the ball last would win.
This year, the Sun Devils
have three Division 1 transfers on the defensive
line that they hope will make a big difference
in the pass rush. That will help a back seven
that is inexperienced, but not devoid of talent.
If the defense can mesh quickly, ASU can make
some noise in the conference.
