Odds in parenthesis are
to win the Big 12 conference.
Texas
(9:5) is the defending national champions,
but will have a far different look this year with
Vince Young in the NFL along with five other of
his teammates. Texas has two freshmen quarterbacks
in Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead, and that is the
team’s biggest question mark. Fortunately,
their running back unit is among the strongest
in the nation, as is the offensive line. The front
seven will lead the way on a championship caliber
defense.
Oklahoma
(11:4) topped a lot of pre-season rankings
before quarterback Rhett Bomar was dismissed from
the team. Fifth-year senior, Paul Thompson takes
over the reigns, but the Bomar loss was big. Fortunately,
the Sooners still have the best running back in
college football in Adrian Peterson. Peterson
will be going behind a line that is young, but
talented. The entire defense looks very intimidating,
especially a front seven who will be very tough
to run against.
Nebraska
(5:1) finished 8-4 in 2005, but won their
last three games including an Alamo Bowl win over
Michigan. Before their late run, Huskers’
fans were desperate to fire Coach Bill Callahan.
Now, they see promise in a potent West Coast passing
attack led by quarterback, Zac Taylor. The running
game is less certain with the loss of Cory Ross.
The defense can get after the quarterback, but
has secondary concerns with the loss of cornerback
Zach Bowman with an ACL injury.
Texas
Tech (8:1) is one of those teams that no
one wants to play because you have to put up 40
points to beat them. This year, the offense will
still be explosive, but they can play some defense
too. Keyunta Dawson moves from defensive end to
strong side linebacker, which they hope will improve
the run defense. The pass defense looks to downgrade
some after losing safeties Vincent Meeks and Dwayne
Slay.
Sleeper Selection
Kansas
(25:1) fits the definition of a sleeper
in the Big 12 for a couple of reasons. The first
is that they play in the Big 12 North, and they
get to avoid Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech in
the regular season. That makes for a pretty soft
schedule.
The Jayhawks’ offense
will lead the way this year even though they have
a freshman at quarterback with Kerry Meier. Defensively,
this team was very solid overall last year, and
the run defense was tremendous.
The loss of eight starters
on “D” dampers the spirit somewhat,
but there is a lot of optimism on campus this
year and Kansas is a team to keep an eye on.
