GAME BY GAME SUMMARIES - NFL WEEK IN REVIEW - WEEK 10
Week 10 REVIEW - Final Score:
Detroit 29, Arizona 21
Detroit, MI
- (MySportsbook.com)
- Joey Harrington threw three
touchdown passes to Roy Williams, as Detroit beat
Arizona, 29-21, at Ford Field. Harrington ended
22-of-32 for 231 yards with the three scores while
Williams caught seven passes for 117 yards for the
Lions (4-5), who put an end to a two-game losing streak.
"You don't have to be perfect with him,"
Harrington said of Williams. "A guy like Roy
can make plays that aren't there." Kevin Jones
had 14 rushes for 81 yards for Detroit. Williams became
the first Lions receiver to catch three TD passes
since Herman Moore accomplished the feat on October
29, 1995. "Everybody's talking about us, doubting
our talent, first-round bust and all that stuff,"
said Williams. "We're players. We've proven ourselves
in this league. We've just got to be consistent. Next
week I can't go out there and drop balls. We've just
got to continue to be productive. I hope I set the
foundation for this wide receiver corps."
Kurt Warner was 29-of-45 for 359 yards
with a touchdown for the Cardinals (2-7), who have
lost three straight contests. Larry Fitzgerald caught
nine passes for 141 yards with a score in the setback.
Detroit took the game's opening kickoff and marched
59 yards in seven plays before Harrington capped the
drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Williams.
The play was reviewed, but replays showed that Williams
controlled the ball and did get both feet inbounds.
The big play on the series was a 36- yard run by Jones
on 4th-and-1 from just inside midfield. The Lions
went ahead 9-0 late in the first quarter as they pinned
Arizona at the two-yard line following an excellent
punt from Nick Harris. On the next play, Obafemi Ayanbadejo
was tackled in the end zone for a safety. Williams'
second touchdown grab of the day, this one from 21
yards out, widened the gap to 16-0 with 11:13 left
in the second period. Neil Rackers' 51-yard field
goal with 5:33 left in the first half then got Arizona
on the board and made it 16-3. He has now hit a franchise-best
27 straight kicks. However, Jason Hanson kicked a
short 26-yard field goal as the first half expired
for a 19-3 edge.
The Cardinals finally got in the end
zone with 9:53 left in the third quarter as J.J. Arrington
capped a nine-play, 79-yard drive with a one-yard
TD run. Arizona then went for two points and got it
to pull within 19-11. It marked the first rushing
touchdown by a Cardinal player this season. Detroit,
though, had a quick answer as Harrington found Williams
for a 29-yard score to widen the gap to 26-11 with
6:03 remaining in the third. Arizona again used a
Rackers field goal, this one from 28 yards, to pull
within 26-14 with 14:09 remaining. However, Hanson's
20-yarder moments later restored the 15-point edge.
The Cards were not done yet, though, as Warner orchestrated
a quick six-play, 62-yard drive before capping it
with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Fitzgerald to
pull Arizona within 29-21 with 2:24 remaining. The
onside kick then failed, but after a defensive stop,
the Cardinals got the ball back with 1:01 remaining.
Warner, though, failed to move the team downfield
and Arizona eventually turned it over on downs with
13 seconds left. "It was obviously good to see
everybody fight in the second half and put ourselves
in a position to win," Warner said. "But
I guess when you spot someone 30 minutes it's tough
to battle back in this league, no matter who you're
playing."
Game Notes
Detroit head coach Steve Mariucci improved
to 7-0 all-time versus the Cardinals...Warner fell
to 27-6 all-time in domes...Fitzgerald has 61 catches
this season.
Week 10 REVIEW - Final Score: Jacksonville
30, Baltimore 3
Jacksonville,
FL - (MySportsbook.com)
- Greg Jones ran for 106 yards
and a touchdown to lead the Jacksonville Jaguars to
a 30-3 win over the Baltimore Ravens at ALLTEL Stadium.
Jones carried the ball 25 times in place of
starting running back Fred Taylor, who missed the
game with a right ankle injury. Byron Leftwich completed
16 of his 30 attempts for 211 yards and a touchdown
for the Jags (6-3), who have won two straight and
four of their last five games. "I'll do whatever
the team needs me to do to win," Jones said.
"It felt real good getting over 100 (yards) today."
Rookie wide receiver Matt Jones finished with 117
yards and a score on five receptions in the win --
Jacksonville's first in seven meetings with the Ravens.
The Jaguars will travel to Tennessee next Sunday.
Quarterback Kyle Boller returned to
Baltimore's starting lineup Sunday after being out
since Week 1 with a case of turf toe, but his return
produced the same results. Boller was 19-of-33 for
142 yards and three interceptions, including a pick
returned for a score, as the Ravens (2-7) suffered
their fourth straight loss. Baltimore will try to
halt its losing skid versus Pittsburgh next Sunday.
Anthony Weaver's stuff of Greg Jones on fourth down
early in the game led to Matt Stover's 41-yard field
goal for a 3-0 Ravens lead. Stover's boot capped a
12-play drive that covered 39 yards. It turned into
a defensive struggle until Leftwich fired a 32-yard
TD strike to Matt Jones with 6:46 to go in the first
half, giving Jacksonville a 7-3 edge. Leftwich was
3-of-4 passing for 59 yards during the seven-play,
78-yard march. The Jaguars grabbed a 10-3 halftime
cushion courtesy of Josh Scobee's 48-yard field goal
as time expired in the second quarter.
Terry Cousin intercepted a pass intended
for Todd Heap and the Jags drove 92 yards in 13 plays,
resulting in Jones' one-yard touchdown run. The score
made it 17-3 with less than three minutes to go in
the third quarter. Scobee nailed a 33-yard field goal
at the 11:27 mark of the fourth quarter to give Jacksonville
a commanding 20-3 lead. He later added a 26-yard boot
to make it a 20-point advantage. Mike Peterson's 26-yard
interception return for a touchdown just before the
two-minute warning completed the scoring. Peterson
finished the game with 10 tackles and a sack. "It
was a good, solid, complete team effort. We executed
at a high level," Jaguars head coach Jack Del
Rio said after the game.
Game Notes
Leftwich is 3-0 against the AFC
North this season...Jimmy Smith ended with 43 yards
on three catches in the win...Jacksonville racked
up 338 yards of offense to 163 yards for Baltimore...Derrick
Mason added 63 yards on four catches for the Ravens...Jamal
Lewis was held to 44 yards on 14 rushes in the loss...Heap
contributed 58 yards on five receptions...Jacksonville
halted its NFL-record, 58-game streak of not scoring
at least 30 points.

Week 10 Review - Final Score: Indianapolis 31, Houston
17
Indianapolis, IN -
(MySportsbook.com)
- Peyton Manning threw for 297
yards and three touchdowns, as the Indianapolis Colts
remained undefeated with a 31-17 victory over the
Houston Texans at the RCA Dome. Edgerrin James
added 122 yards with a touchdown on 26 carries for
the Colts (9-0), who are the lone unbeaten team in
the NFL. Marvin Harrison finished with seven catches
for 108 yards and a score in the victory. David Carr
threw for a touchdown and Jonathan Wells ran for a
score, as the Texans (1-8) lost their second straight
and fell to 0-8 all-time against the Colts. Manning
completed 26-of-35 passes and was not intercepted
in the victory, as the Colts became the 11th team
since 1970 to start a season with nine straight wins.
Only the 1972 Miami Dolphins went on to complete a
season undefeated and the Colts will have a pair of
tough tests the next two weeks with a visit to Cincinnati
followed by a Monday night home game against Pittsburgh.
"Two games in six days takes something out of
you no matter how it goes," said Colts head coach
Tony Dungy in reference to Monday's 40-21 victory
over New England. "But we were able to get this
win and we will be able to move on and get ready for
Cincinnati."
After the teams traded punts to start
the game, the Colts scored on three straight possessions
to take control. Indy's second series started with
a four-yard loss by James on first down, but Manning
twice converted third down with completions and finished
the 10-play, 70-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown
pass to Dallas Clark late in the first quarter. Manning
then directed a 12-play, 86-yard march for another
score. A Houston penalty for offside on 4th-and-1
prolonged the series and James did most of the work
with six carries for 36 yards, including a five-yard
scoring run for a 14-0 lead with 11:14 remaining in
the opening half. The Colts followed a Houston punt
with a nine-play, 71-yard drive for another touchdown.
Manning hit Reggie Wayne with a 17-yard pass on 3rd-and-3
to keep it alive, then finished the march with a 21-yard
scoring toss to Brandon Stokley to make it 21-0. "I
thought we were able to spread the ball around pretty
well," Manning said. "In this offense it
can be anybody on any given Sunday. I think you see
on film that we do spread it around and you can hit
them with Marvin, Reggie, Stokley, Dallas and Edgerrin
out of the backfield. It can put the defense in a
bind as far as who to double team."
Houston managed just 51 yards on 15
plays during its first four possessions, then caught
a break when the Colts muffed a punt with just 2:55
left in the half. Carr needed just three plays to
put his team in the end zone, as he threw passes of
14 and six yards before Wells raced 14 yards for a
touchdown on the first play after the two-minute warning.
he Texans had just four first downs and 84 total yards
in the first half, compared to 16 first downs and
231 yards for the Colts. Houston then took the opening
kickoff of the second half and drove 60 yards in 11
plays for another touchdown. Carr completed each of
his four passes during the series, including a 13-yard
scoring strike to Jabar Gaffney to make it a seven-point
game. It didn't take long for the Colts to answer
as Manning finished a five-play, 75-yard march with
a 30-yard touchdown pass to Harrison.
Another special teams mistake cost
the Colts when a Houston punt hit the helmet of Indy's
Jason David and the Texans recovered at the Indianapolis
30. It led to a 24-yard field goal by Kris Brown,
pulling Houston within 28-17 in the final minute of
the third quarter. The Colts extended the lead back
to 14 with a 45-yard field goal by Mike Vanderjagt
early in the fourth quarter. Houston followed with
a drive to the Indianapolis 27, but a fourth-down
pass from Carr fell incomplete with 7:06 left to end
the last real Texans threat. "We weren't consistent
enough," said Texans head coach Dom Capers. "We
played better in the second half."
Game Notes
Manning and Harrison became the first
quarterback/receiver duo to reach 10,000 career yards...James
reached the 100-yard plateau for the 47th time in
his career, tying Franco Harris for eighth-most in
NFL history. The Colts improved to 41-6 when he reaches
the century mark, including 7-0 this season. He also
went over 1,000 yards in a season for the fifth time
in his career...Indy defensive end Robert Mathis did
not have a sack, ending his string of eight straight
games with at least one...The Texans were without
running back Domanick Davis, who sat out his second
straight game with a knee injury...Houston's Jason
Simmons injured his hamstring on the first punt of
the game in the first quarter and Texans offensive
tackle Todd Wade left in the fourth quarter with a
sprained right knee.
Week 10 Review - Final Score: Buffalo
14, Kansas City 3
Orchard
Park, NY - (MySportsbook.com)
- J.P. Losman relieved an injured
Kelly Holcomb and threw a pair of touchdown passes,
as Buffalo defeated Kansas City, 14-3, at Ralph Wilson
Stadium. Losman came in early in the second
quarter after Holcomb left with a head injury. Holcomb,
who was sacked by Jared Allen and fumbled the ball,
had his head bounce off the ground before exiting
the game on his own power. The 24-year-old Losman
ended 9-of-16 for 137 yards while Lee Evans was the
recipient of both touchdown passes for the Bills (4-5),
who put an end to a two-game losing streak. "It
was a little bit of a comeback for me," said
Losman, who lost his starting job in Week 5. "I
feel like it was a comeback. Whether I play good or
bad, I loved the way I focused. I loved the way I
was concentrating. I love that anger, I love it."
Evans had three catches for 66 yards while Willis
McGahee, who briefly left with a hand injury, rushed
for 66 yards on 20 carries in the win. Holcomb was
4-of-6 for only 25 yards.
Trent Green had a miserable afternoon,
going 23-of-40 for 220 yards with three interceptions
and a fumble for the Chiefs (5-4), who failed to follow
up their last-second Week 9 win over Oakland. "That's
just part of the game," Green said of the interceptions.
"I could have made some decisions differently.
I could have tried putting the ball in different places.
You just can't turn the ball over, especially on the
road when your defense is playing so well." Larry
Johnson, who is the now the team's full-time starter
after Priest Holmes was placed on injured reserve
with a neck injury, ran the ball 27 times for 132
yards in the KC setback. Tony Gonzalez made eight
catches for 81 yards for Kansas City. After a series
of punts to begin the game, Kansas City got on the
board as Lawrence Tynes booted a 35-yard field goal
with 1:17 left in the first quarter. The seven-play,
45-yard drive was aided by Johnson's 24-yard run.
Early in the second, Buffalo then went
for it on 4th-and-inches from its own territory, but
Holcomb botched the play on what appeared to be a
quarterback sneak, and it gave the Chiefs excellent
field position. However, Green fumbled shortly after
and Jeff Posey picked up the ball for the Bills and
ran it back all the way to the Kansas City 12. Buffalo,
though, could not capitalize as Holcomb was hit on
3rd-and-5 and fumbled the ball where Carlos Hall recovered
for the Chiefs. The hit put on by Allen also knocked
Holcomb out of the game, as he exited with the head
injury. Kansas City tried to take advantage of the
turnover as it drove down the field, but it also could
not score as Tynes missed a 44-yard kick. Tynes had
made 14 straight field goals prior to the miss. The
Bills then took the field with Losman under center
and the second-year pro provided a much-needed spark.
Losman orchestrated a seven-play, 66-yard drive before
finishing it off with a 33-yard touchdown pass to
Evans. Losman passed for 65 yards on the series, which
also included a 28-yard strike to Josh Reed.
Green was then intercepted on the ensuing
drive, but the turnover was not costly as Rian Lindell
missed a 28-yard field goal. Buffalo took advantage
of Green's second interception of the game as it scored
a touchdown midway through the third period. After
beginning inside the Chiefs 30-yard line courtesy
of Rashad Baker's interception, Losman hooked up again
with Evans, this time from 29 yards away, to make
it 14-3. "We knew they could present some problems
for us and we just couldn't get it solved completely,"
said Kansas City head coach Dick Vermeil. "I
thought the defense did a lot of good things and kept
the game close enough, other than the two big plays
they gave up. We would have had to shut them out to
beat them 3-0."
|
Tynes missed a
43-yard kick early in the fourth quarter, and
Green then threw another pick later in the period,
but it did not hurt the Chiefs as Lindell missed
another short field goal. Kansas City, though,
could not mount any comebacks this week and
failed to get in the end zone for the first
time since a 24-0 loss at Oakland on December
28, 2002.

Game
Notes
McGahee fumbled late in
the fourth quarter, the first ball he coughed
up in a span of 240 touches...Buffalo is 11-2

receiving yards, surpassing the previous mark
held by Otis Taylor (7,306)...Green, who was
also sacked six times, entered the game having
not thrown an interception in 145 attempts.
He was intercepted on his 15th pass of the game...Tynes,
who was 1-for-3, has made at least one field
goal in 12 straight games, which ties Pete Stoyanovich

Jan Stenerud made a FG in 16 straight contests
from 1969-70...Vermeil lost for the first time
in five career games against Buffalo (4-1)...Kansas
City All-Pro guard Will Shields started his

Week 10 Review - Final Score: Minnesota 24, NY Giants
21
East Rutherford,
NJ - (MySportsbook.com)
- Paul Edinger missed his first
two field-goal attempts, but nailed a 48-yarder with
10 seconds remaining in the game to lift Minnesota
past the New York Giants, 24-21. Edinger's
clutch field goal gave Minnesota (4-5) its first win
on the road this season. The Vikings were 0-4 outside
the Metrodome before Sunday's matchup at Giants Stadium.
Darren Sharper intercepted three passes and returned
one for a 92-yard touchdown for the Vikings, who won
for the second straight week and ended a three-game
slide to the Giants. Minnesota, which will face Green
Bay next Monday night at Lambeau Field, became the
first team in NFL history to return a kickoff, a punt
and an interception for a touchdown in the same game.
Koren Robinson had an 86-yard kickoff
return for a score, while Mewelde Moore took a punt
back for a 71-yard touchdown. The Vikings had their
worst offensive performance of the season with 137
total yards and produced just six yards in the first
half. Eli Manning finished 23-of-48 for 290 yards
with a touchdown and four interceptions in his worst
outing for the Giants (6-3), who had their three-
game winning streak halted despite having 405 total
yards. "That was not anywhere near close to the
football that we teach or talk about," said Giants
head coach Tom Coughlin. "We turned the ball
over like it was a non-issue."
Tiki Barber did all he could for New
York, racking up 95 yards rushing with a score and
a career-high 111 yards receiving. Amani Toomer chipped
in 61 yards and a touchdown on six receptions in the
loss. The Giants will battle NFC East-rival Philadelphia
next Sunday. After the Vikings had a touchdown negated
on an offensive pass interference call against Travis
Taylor, Minnesota was forced to punt. The Giants went
three-and-out, however, and Moore made them pay with
a 71-yard punt return for a TD with less than six
minutes to go in the third quarter to give Minnesota
a 21-13 lead. Barber then had a touchdown nullified
with less than five minutes to go in the game after
a New York lineman was whistled for being downfield.
Manning was then intercepted by Sharper for the third
time, tying a Minnesota record. The Vikings couldn't
produce anything offensively and punted the ball back
to New York, which put together a game-tying drive.
Consecutive 11-yard passes by Manning
put the Giants in Minnesota territory and a defensive
holding penalty later in the drive set the offense
up at the 21-yard line. Barber then hauled in an 18-yard
pass and reached the end zone on a three-yard run
to make it a two-point game. Barber got the call again
on the two-point conversion and busted up the middle
from three yards away for a 21-21 score with 1:21
remaining in the game. Brad Johnson, who was 17-of-30
for 144 yards, drove the Vikings 42 yards in eight
plays and completed four passes in the march to set
up Edinger, who booted a 48-yard field goal with 10
seconds left. "You get in a two-minute mode and
you have to stay relaxed, stay with your game, stay
with your calls that you practice and practice and
that's what we did," said Johnson about the winning
drive. "We got a few completions, we didn't panic
on the sack on the very first play."
Edinger then squibbed the ensuing kickoff
out of bounds, giving the Giants the ball at their
own 40-yard line. However, Tim Carter was tackled
after taking a lateral pass from Barber at midfield.
Willie Ponder fumbled the opening kickoff, but the
Giants dodged a bullet when Edinger was wide right
on a 40-yard field goal try. Sharper's first interception
later in the first quarter was wasted when Edinger
had his field-goal attempt blocked by Damane Duckett.
New York was putting together a decent drive towards
the end of the first quarter and Jeremy Shockey's
12-yard catch set up the offense inside the Minnesota
20-yard line. Barber got four yards on first down,
but Sharper stepped in front of a pass intended for
Plaxico Burress and raced 92 yards for a 7-0 Vikings
lead at the 14:43 mark of the second quarter. "I
saw a three-step drop by Eli and just basically took
off to the rout," said Sharper. "He threw
it and I just was happy I held onto it and then I
was just clear sailing."
Jay Feely got the Giants on the board
with a 35-yard field goal minutes later and then made
it a 7-6 contest on a 48-yarder with 3:39 to go before
the half. Minnesota opened the second half on a good
note as Robinson took the kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown,
extending Minnesota's lead to 14-6 just 11 seconds
into the period. "This is an awesome team performance,
especially the way the defense came through,"
said Johnson. "Special teams were awesome."
Manning then orchestrated a quick 85-yard drive and
pulled the Giants to within one on a 23-yard TD pass
to Toomer at 11:46. The good field position was keyed
by a defensive pass interference penalty against Antoine
Winfield.
Game Notes
Vikings head coach Mike Tice
hurt his knee when he was taken out along the sideline
during a return...Robinson led all Vikings receivers
with 44 yards on one catch...Minnesota running back
Michael Bennett was limited to 16 yards on 19 touches...Shockey
had 55 yards on five catches, while Burress recorded
50 yards on three receptions...The Giants were seeking
their third 7-2 start since 1990...Manning has fired
a TD pass in 10 straight games -- the longest current
streak in the NFL.
