NFL Week Review
Final
Score: Pittsburgh 34, New England 20
Pittsburgh, PA (Wager On Football.com)- Pittsburgh
quarterback Ben Roethlisberger kept his personal streak
intact and helped end one of the most impressive runs in
sports, as the Steelers halted New England's NFL-record
21-game winning streak with a 34-20 victory at Heinz Field.
The defending Super Bowl champion Patriots had won 18 consecutive
regular- season contests and a franchise-best seven in a
row on the road. New England also chalked up a loss for
the first time since September 28, 2003 (399 days), a 20-17
setback to the Washington Redskins. Roethlisberger, who
threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns, has won his first
five starts and is one triumph away for most consecutive
victories to start a rookie's career. Mike Kruczek of the
Steelers was 6-0 in 1976. The Steelers (6-1) have won five
straight since their only loss of the season to Baltimore
on September 19.Tom Brady threw a pair of touchdown passes
to David Givens and finished with 271 yards on 25-of-43
passing for New England (6-1). Brady was intercepted twice
and the Patriots committed four costly turnovers.
Final
Score: Philadelphia 15, Baltimore 10
Philadelphia, PA (Wager On Football.com)- Terrell
Owens caught eight balls for 101 yards and a touchdown to
lead the Philadelphia Eagles over the Baltimore Ravens,
15-10, in a much-anticipated matchup at Lincoln Financial
Field. The Eagles and Ravens engaged in a highly-publicized
offseason struggle regarding Owens, who was traded to Baltimore
from San Francisco after his agent failed to file the proper
paperwork to make Owens a free agent. The wideout protested
the trade, expressing his desire to become a free agent
and play for the Eagles, and the Ravens begrudgingly granted
the request after the NFL Players' Union filed a grievance
on his behalf. Donovan McNabb completed 18-of-33 passes
for 219 yards and score for the Eagles (7-0), who are off
to their best start in franchise history. Philadelphia is
the only remaining unbeaten team in the NFL, this after
New England stumbled to a loss in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Kyle Boller was 24-of-38 passing for 223 yards with a touchdown
and an interception for the Ravens (4-3), who had a two-game
win streak snapped.
Final
Score: Kansas City 45, Indianapolis 35
Kansas City, MO (Wager On Football.com)- Trent
Green threw for 389 yards with three touchdowns and Priest
Holmes ran for 143 yards with three scores, leading the
Kansas City Chiefs to a 45-35 victory over the Indianapolis
Colts in another shootout at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs
(3-4) gained a measure of revenge for last year's 38-31
playoff loss to Indianapolis at Arrowhead and won their
second straight game with a dominating offensive performance.
Last week, Kansas City scored eight rushing touchdowns in
a 56-10 rout of Atlanta. This Sunday, the Chiefs finished
with 387 passing yards and 203 on the ground for a total
of 590, as the balanced attack helped keep Indianapolis
quarterback Peyton Manning off the field -- to an extent.
Manning threw for a career-high 472 yards and five touchdowns
on 25-of-44 passing, but his last-ditch comeback attempt
ended with an interception in the end zone in the closing
minutes. Edgerrin James, who ran for 125 yards and two scores
in last year's playoff game, was a non-factor on the ground
with just 34 yards on 10 carries for the Colts (4-3), who
have lost consecutive games for the first time since dropping
three straight from October 21 through November 3 of 2002.
Final
Score: Buffalo 38, Arizona 14
Orchard Park, NY (Wager On Football.com)- Willis
McGahee picked up his first two career NFL touchdowns and
Terrence McGee returned a kickoff for an 87-yard score,
leading Buffalo to a 38-14 rout over Arizona at a windy
Ralph Wilson Stadium. McGahee rushed 30 times for 102 yards
and Drew Bledsoe fired touchdown passes to Eric Moulds and
Tim Euhus. Bledsoe ended just 8- of-17 for 81 yards while
Rian Lindell booted a 25-yard field goal for Buffalo (2-5),
which has won two of three after a four-game slide to start
the season. Cardinals quarterback Josh McCown struggled
on the day as he completed only 9- of-24 passes for 101
yards. He did throw a touchdown pass to Bryant Johnson while
Obafemi Ayanbadejo ran for a score for Arizona (2-5), which
has dropped three of four and 17 straight on the road dating
back to 2002.
Final
Score: Houston 20, Jacksonville 6
Houston, TX (Wager On Football.com)- David Carr
passed for 276 yards with a touchdown and Demarcus Faggins
sealed the win with a 43-yard interception return for a
score late in the fourth quarter, as Houston defeated Jacksonville,
20-6, at Reliant Stadium. Carr, who left briefly in the
third quarter with an ankle injury, ended 26- of-34 for
the Texans (4-3), who have won four of their last five games.
Jabar Gaffney caught five passes for 88 yards and Corey
Bradford added 52 receiving yards and a touchdown for Houston,
which is over .500 after seven games in a season for the
first time in the franchise's history. Byron Leftwich completed
25-of-40 passes for 227 yards, but threw two costly interceptions
for the Jaguars (5-3), who had their two- game winning streak
halted.
Final Score: NY Giants 34, Minnesota 13
Minneapolis, MN (Wager On Football.com)- Tiki Barber
ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns and the New York Giants
took advantage of three Minnesota turnovers to post a 34-13
victory at the Metrodome. Mike Cloud also rushed for a pair
of scores for the Giants (5-2), who rebounded from last
week's disappointing home defeat to Detroit with an authoritative
win over the NFC North-leading Vikings. Daunte Culpepper
threw for 231 yards on 24-of-42 passing along with a touchdown
for Minnesota (5-2), which played the second half without
star wide receiver Randy Moss and saw a four-game win streak
come to an end. However, the Pro Bowl quarterback also threw
two interceptions in New York territory and was charged
with a fumble which led to New York's first points.
Final
Score: Tennessee 27, Cincinnati 20
Nashville, TN (Wager On Football.com)- Chris Brown
ran for 147 yards and a touchdown on a sore foot to lead
the Tennessee Titans over the Cincinnati Bengals, 27-20,
at The Coliseum. In his second start of the season, Billy
Volek completed 21-of-32 passes for 210 yards with two touchdowns
and an interception for the Titans (3-5), who snapped a
two-game losing streak despite the absence last year's co-MVP.
Tennessee starting quarterback Steve McNair did not play
as he continues to recover from a bruised sternum. The Titans
are idle next week and the bye will give McNair an extra
week to heal. Carson Palmer was 20-of-36 for 247 yards with
no touchdowns and an interception for the Bengals (2-5),
who have dropped three of their last four.
Final
Score: Dallas 31, Detroit 21
Irving, TX (Wager On Football.com)- Vinny Testaverde
threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score to
lead the Dallas Cowboys past the Detroit Lions, 31-21, at
Texas Stadium. Keyshawn Johnson was at the receiving end
of two Testaverde scores to help the Cowboys (3-4) snap
a three-game losing streak. Eddie George rushed for a season-high
99 yards on 31 carries while Jason Witten had nine receptions
for 84 yards and a touchdown. Testaverde finished 19-of-24
for 235 yards despite three interceptions. He was working
with a relatively inexperienced group of receivers with
Terry Glenn and Quincy Morgan both injured. Joey Harrington
completed 19-of-32 attempts for 255 yards and a pair of
touchdowns for the Lions (4-3), who were looking to win
their fourth straight road game for the first time since
1956.
Final Score: Green Bay 28, Washington 14
Landover, MD (Wager On Football.com)- Ahman Green
accounted for 143 yards from scrimmage and ran for two touchdowns
to lead Green Bay to a 28-14 win over Washington at FedEx
Field. Green ran for 70 yards on 24 carries and also caught
four passes for 73 yards for the Packers (4-4), who have
won three straight on the heels of a four-game losing streak.
Brett Favre completed 20- of-33 passes for 289 yards and
one touchdown with three interceptions for Green Bay, which
nearly squandered a 17-0 lead. He also extended his NFL
record of consecutive starts to 197 and passed John Elway
(4,123) for second place on the all-time completions list
Mark Brunell -- who threw for 218 yards on 25-of-44 passing
-- completed a pair of 12-yard touchdown tosses to Rod Gardner
for the Redskins (2-5), who have lost five of their last
six. Shawn Springs set up both scores with two interceptions.
Final
Score: Seattle 23, Carolina 17
Seattle, WA (Wager On Football.com)- Shaun Alexander
scored two touchdowns and ran for 195 yards on 32 carries
to lead Seattle to a 23-17 win over Carolina at Qwest Field.
Matt Hasselbeck completed 21-of-30 passes for 201 yards
and a touchdown for the Seahawks (4-3), who took an early
14-0 lead and snapped a three-game losing steak. Darrell
Jackson caught six passes for 71 yards and Josh Brown kicked
three field goals. Jake Delhomme threw for 248 yards and
two touchdowns on 19-of-36 passes for the Panthers (1-6),
who have lost five straight. Muhsin Muhammad pulled in eight
catches for 106 yards and two scores.
Final Score: Atlanta 41, Denver 28
Denver, CO (Wager On Football.com)- Michael Vick
completed 18-of-24 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns
to go with 115 yards on the ground, as the Atlanta Falcons
defeated the Denver Broncos, 41-28, at Invesco Field. Vick,
who has struggled in the newly-installed West Coast offense
for most of the season, finally demonstrated the ability
that makes him one of the game's most feared playmakers.
He ran the ball 12 times, keeping the Denver defense on
its heels throughout. Peerless Price had only two catches,
but both resulted in touchdowns for the Falcons, who rebounded
from a dreadful 56-10 loss in Kansas City last week to get
off their first 6-2 start since 1998.Jake Plummer was 31-of-55
passing for a career-best 499 yards and four touchdowns,
but was also intercepted three times for the Broncos (5-3),
losers of back-to-back contests.
Final
Score: San Diego 42, Oakland 14
San Diego, CA (Wager On Football.com)- Drew Brees
threw for 281 yards and a career- high five touchdowns to
lead San Diego to a 42-14 rout of AFC West-rival Oakland
at Qualcomm Stadium. Brees and the Charger offense were
nearly flawless as San Diego (5-3) registered its fourth
victory in five games and surpassed its entire win total
of 2003 at the midway point of this season. The fourth-year
pro completed 22- of-25 passes and directed touchdowns on
six of the Chargers' first seven possessions. Antonio Gates
had five catches for 63 yards and two scores for the Chargers,
who built a 28-7 lead at halftime. Eric Parker hauled in
six receptions for 91 yards in the triumph. Kerry Collins
finished with 263 yards on 24-of-39 passing for the Raiders
(2-6), who have dropped five straight after a 2-1 start.
He tossed one touchdown but was intercepted twice.
Final
Score: Chicago 23, San Francisco 13
Chicago, IL (Wager On Football.com)- Craig Krenzel
passed for 168 yards and a touchdown in his first career
NFL start, Nathan Vasher scored on a 71-yard interception
return, Paul Edinger kicked three field goals and the Chicago
Bears beat San Francisco, 23-13, on Sunday night. Krenzel,
who took over for an ineffective Jonathan Quinn in the second
half of last week's loss to Tampa Bay, completed 13 of his
25 passes. He connected with Bernard Berrian for a 49-yard
touchdown on his first pass of the game, giving the Bears
(2-5) an early 7-0 lead, but committed costly turnovers
on the next two Chicago possessions. The Bears snapped a
four-game losing streak and won at Soldier Field for the
first time this season. Edinger's final field goal and Vasher's
TD sealed the game in the fourth quarter. Ken Dorsey, starting
in place of the injured Tim Rattay (right forearm), was
16-of-36 for 122 yards in the loss. Dwaine Carpenter scored
on an 80-yard fumble return and Todd Peterson kicked two
field goals for the 49ers (1-6), who haven't won in Chicago
in the regular season since 1974.
