Fantasy Quarterback rankings and
statistical projections from VIPsports Edge's fantasy
draft guide.
1) Peyton Manning - Indianapolis
4,200 Pass YD, 30 Pass TD, 13 INT, 40 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 321 Points.
Manning’s 3,747 passing yards last year were
the lowest since 1998. His attempts were also a career
low of 453. With Edgerrin James departing, Manning’s
attempts will go back up, and so will his passing
yards. He is a unanimous choice as the number one
fantasy quarterback.
2) Tom Brady - New England
4,000 Pass YD, 27 Pass TD, 14 INT, 50 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 305 Points.
Brady is not only known as a three-time Super Bowl
winning quarterback, but as a fantasy stalwart as
well. Brady was tops in the NFL in passing yardage
last year and third in touchdowns thrown. He will
be expected to carry much of the offensive load again
this season.
3) Eli Manning – NY
Giants
3,900 Pass YD, 25 Pass TD, 16 INT, 50 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 290 Points.
2005 was Manning’s first full season, and his
3,762 passing yards and 24 touchdowns were both top
five in the NFL. Manning needs to lower his 17 interceptions
and not implode in the playoffs like he did against
Carolina, but he is still an upper-echelon fantasy
quarterback.
4) Matt Hasselbeck - Seattle
3,500 Pass YD, 24 Pass TD, 12 INT, 100 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 275 Points.
Hasselbeck had his best overall year in 2005 with
3,459 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and just nine interceptions.
It wasn’t a career high in passing yardage,
but with Shaun Alexander having an MVP year, his attempts
were lessened. Expect another solid year in 2006.
5) Michael Vick - Atlanta
2,600 Pass YD, 16 Pass TD, 12 INT, 600 Rush YD, 5
Rush TD, 272 Points.
Vick was one of the top fantasy players in the entire
NFL in 2002, but it hasn’t worked out that way
since. In fact, he was just the 10th ranked fantasy
quarterback in 2005. An improved maturity on his part,
and a better receiving core, will give him a bump
up this season.
6) Drew Bledsoe - Dallas
3,800 Pass YD, 23 Pass TD, 17 INT, 30 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 268 Points.
Bledsoe is entering his 14th season in the NFL, and
while he does not appear to be any closer to a championship
level quarterback, he can put up good passing numbers.
Bledsoe will be helped by having Terrell Owens this
year, and what should be an improved running game.
7) Donovan McNabb - Philadelphia
3,500 Pass YD, 20 Pass TD, 12 INT, 125 Rush YD, 2
Rush TD, 268 Points.
McNabb missed the last seven games in 2005 with a
sports hernia and the Eagles plummeted without him.
Philadelphia needs to develop a consistent running
game so McNabb is not forced to do it all. Losing
wide receiver, Terrell Owens helps him personally,
but not professionally.
8) Marc Bulger - St. Louis
3,650 Pass YD, 22 Pass TD, 15 INT, 50 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 267 Points.
Bulger had a tough 2005, missing eight starts with
a shoulder injury. The prior two seasons, he averaged
more than 3,900 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. Bulger’s
shoulder is healthy now and he is a very good fantasy
quarterback if he stays upright for all 16 games.
9) Jake Delhomme - Carolina
3,500 Pass YD, 24 Pass TD, 16 INT, 35 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 265 Points.
Delhomme is a big game quarterback who has proved
to be a legitimate fantasy starter as well. Unfortunately
for Delhomme, he had a terrible NFC Championship against
Seattle, although that will not be held against him
here. Expect more good things to come in 2006.
10) Trent Green - Kansas
City
3,800 Pass YD, 19 Pass TD, 12 INT, 80 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 262 Points.
Green threw for 4,014 yards last year, down from
4,591 in 2004. One fantasy concern is that his touchdown
passes dropped from 27 to 17. Green’s passing
attempts should decrease slightly this year as Larry
Johnson is featured more, but he is still a worthy
fantasy pick.
11) Jake Plummer - Denver
3,400 Pass YD, 18 Pass TD, 10 INT, 150 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 262 Points.
Plummer had a solid 2005 regular season with 3,366
yards passing yards, 18 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions.
Plummer was awful in the AFC title game, and Denver
drafted Jay Cutler in the first round. Still, this
is his team as Cutler will not be ready until at least
2007.
12) Carson Palmer –
Cincinnati
3,150 Pass YD, 24 Pass TD, 11 INT, 25 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 245 Points.
Palmer had an MVP caliber 2005 regular season, but
suffered a devastating knee injury in their playoff
game against Pittsburgh. Palmer is projected to be
ready for the season opener, but that still seems
overly optimistic, and Palmer is a risky pick at this
current juncture.
13) Brett Favre - Green Bay
3,600 Pass YD, 20 Pass TD, 22 INT, 40 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 242 Points.
Favre decided to play another season, and he is still
a pretty good fantasy quarterback. The bad news regarding
Favre is that he threw 29 interceptions last year
versus 20 touchdowns. He seems uninterested in playing
for a poor team, but he will still put up some numbers.
14) Byron Leftwich –
Jacksonville
3,050 Pass YD, 19 Pass TD, 9 INT, 100 Rush YD, 2
Rush TD, 242 Points.
Leftwich is one of the ultimate warriors at the quarterback
position, but he has never been healthy enough to
start all 16 games in his first three years. His numbers
project to a 3,000 yard passing season with close
to 20 touchdowns if healthy, but there is some risk
there.
15) Aaron Brooks - Oakland
3,100 Pass YD, 19 Pass TD, 17 INT, 175 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 238 Points.
Brooks arrives as a free agent from New Orleans with
perhaps his last chance to earn a starting job in
the NFL. If Brooks starts all 16 games, he is capable
of above average fantasy numbers, but he also has
a good chance of being pulled sometime this season.
16) David Carr - Houston
3,000 Pass YD, 16 Pass TD, 13 INT, 250 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 232 Points.
Carr was the top pick in the 2002 draft, but he hasn’t
lived up to his billing, especially in 2005. Last
year, Carr was hurt by a poor offensive line and mediocre
receivers. The line is still a big question mark,
but new coach, Gary Kubiak and receiver Eric Moulds
are good additions.
17) Steve McNair - Baltimore
3,100 Pass YD, 18 Pass TD, 12 INT, 100 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 231 Points.
McNair comes over from Tennessee after an acrimonious
divorce. He is a former co-MVP of the league, but
he has never been a great fantasy quarterback due
to injuries and being in conservative offenses. McNair
will improve Baltimore’s win total, but not
put up huge numbers.
18) Drew Brees - New Orleans
3,000 Pass YD, 20 Pass TD, 13 INT, 50 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 228 Points.
Brees developed into a very good quarterback the
last two years in San Diego. The question is, how
will Brees respond to a new offensive system and being
on a worse team? Brees is also dealing with shoulder
issues, but he is expected to start the season at
close to 100%.
19) Mark Brunell - Washington
3,000 Pass YD, 20 Pass TD, 12 INT, 60 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 224 Points.
Brunell had a very good season last year, throwing
for over 3,000 yards for the first time since 2001.
He also threw for 23 touchdowns versus just 10 interceptions.
2005 first round pick, Jason Campbell is lurking in
the shadows, but Brunell will hold him off another
year.
20) Daunte Culpepper - Miami
2,850 Pass YD, 18 Pass TD, 11 INT, 125 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 222 Points.
Culpepper is recovering from a severe knee injury
suffered last year in Minnesota. The latest news projects
him to be ready for opening day, but that is not a
definite. Culpepper will also have issues early on
in the season adjusting to a new offense and new teammates.
21) Kurt Warner - Arizona
3,250 Pass YD, 16 Pass TD, 12 INT, 30 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 218 Points.
Warner is a very good fantasy quarterback in this
offense when healthy, but he hasn’t played more
than 10 games since 2001. Warner signed a three year
contract in February, but there is a great chance
that Matt Leinart will be starting sooner than later
due to another injury.
22) Jon Kitna - Detroit
3,100 Pass YD, 18 Pass TD, 15 INT, 25 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 215 Points.
Kitna comes over from Cincinnati where he was one
of the best backups in the NFL the last two years.
For the five seasons before that, he was mostly a
starter with Cincinnati and Seattle. Look for Kitna
to be the starter here, and he should do well in Mike
Martz’s system.
23) Phillip Rivers - San
Diego
3,000 Pass YD, 17 Pass TD, 14 INT, 50 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 209 Points.
Rivers was a 2004 first round pick, but the question
remains whether he is closer to fellow draftee Ben
Roethlisberger, or J.P. Losman. Rivers had two years
to sit and learn under Drew Brees, and he has a lot
of offensive weapons. Now, all he has to do is deliver
the goods.
24) Brad Johnson - Minnesota
2,900 Pass YD, 18 Pass TD, 12 INT, 30 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 208 Points.
Johnson is a hard guy to peg for 2006. He did a great
job filling in for an injured Daunte Culpepper last
year, winning seven of nine games in his starts. The
bad news is that he had just one game of over 250
yards passing, making him a below average fantasy
quarterback.
25) Billy Volek - Tennessee
3,000 Pass YD, 17 Pass TD, 13 INT, 25 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 208 Points.
With Steve McNair gone to Baltimore and rookie Vince
Young not ready yet, Volek will be the starting quarterback.
Volek is 30 years-old, but has only really played
in three NFL seasons. With a career quarterback rating
of 86.9, Volek is a sleeper to watch out for.
26) Ben Roethlisberger -
Pittsburgh
2,600 Pass YD, 17 Pass TD, 10 INT, 50 Rush YD, 2
Rush TD, 205 Points.
Roethlisberger became the youngest quarterback ever
to win the Super Bowl last year, but fantasy owners
would be happy just to see him throw 3,000 yards in
a season. Roethlisberger recently suffered a horrific
motorcycle accident and his playing status is not
fully known yet.
27) Chris Simms - Tampa Bay
3,000 Pass YD, 15 Pass TD, 10 INT, 30 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 203 Points.
Simms is the undisputed starter with Brian Griese
gone, and that is good news for his psyche. Simms
needs to continue to work on his decision making and
he is improving overall as he enters his 4th NFL season.
The jury is still out on whether he is a Super Bowl
level quarterback.
28) Charlie Frye –
Cleveland
2,750 Pass YD, 15 Pass TD, 15 INT, 100 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 199 Points.
Frye will get the starting nod after averaging 189
yards passing in his five starts last season. He also
had a respectable 72.8 quarterback rating overall.
Frye is an interesting long term prospect, but this
year will be a learning process and that limits his
fantasy value.
29) J.P. Losman - Buffalo
2,600 Pass YD, 14 Pass TD, 15 INT, 200 Rush YD, 1
Rush TD, 197 Points.
Losman is a former first round pick in the same year
as Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger. In eight starts
last year, Losman threw for over 200 yards just once.
He is currently competing with Kelly Holcomb and Craig
Nall for the Bills’ starting assignment.
30) Chad Pennington - NY
Jets
2,600 Pass YD, 15 Pass TD, 9 INT, 30 Rush YD, 0 Rush
TD, 184 Points.
Pennington was once a very good NFL quarterback,
but he has never stayed healthy for 16 games, and
he has never been a great “fantasy” quarterback.
Pennington says his balky shoulder is now healed,
but he is still not guaranteed to be the starter this
year.
31) Alex Smith - San Francisco
2,500 Pass YD, 9 Pass TD, 14 INT, 100 Rush YD, 0
Rush TD, 157 Points.
Smith was the first pick in the 2005 draft out of
Utah, and he was forced into starting seven games
as a rookie. The results were not pretty, with one
touchdown thrown versus 11 interceptions. Even with
a lot of improvement, Smith is not a backup fantasy
option.
32) Rex Grossman - Chicago
1,800 Pass YD, 12 Pass TD, 8 INT, 50 Rush YD, 0 Rush
TD, 135 Points.
Grossman is entering his 4th year in the league and
has started a grand total of just seven games. Most
of the reason has been devastating injuries, as he
looks promising when he is healthy. The team brought
in Brian Griese for insurance as you can’t count
on Grossman.
33) Brian Griese –
Chicago
800 Pass YD, 6 Pass TD, 4 INT, 15 Rush YD, 0 Rush
TD, 62 Points.
Griese is no stranger to quarterback controversies
having just come from one in Tampa Bay with Chris
Simms. Simms was eventually the team’s choice,
and now Griese will likely make Rex Grossman uncomfortable
as his backup.
