Brady Quinn
The Notre Dame
quarterback is the favorite to win the award for
a number of reasons. First, he plays the most
glamorous position on the field. Five of the last
six Heisman winners were quarterbacks, and three
of them, Eric Crouch, Danny Wuerffel and Jason
White, had no where near the talent level of Quinn.
Two, Quinn plays for Charlie
Weis, one of the finest offensive minds in College
Football. Weis coached perhaps the best quarterback
in the NFL in Tom Brady, and helped lead them
to multiple Super Bowls. Weis was able to outmaneuver
some of best defensive coordinators in the NFL,
making his job that much easier in college.
Quinn plays for the most
prestigious football power in the nation, at least
according to the Notre Dame fans and alumni. The
Irish may have lost some of their panache since
the days of Lou Holtz, but no other program has
their own national television contract. Quinn
is trying to become the first Notre Dame quarterback
to win the award since John Huarte in 1964.
Quinn started off his Heisman
run with 246 yards passing in a 14-10 win over
Georgia Tech. He had no touchdowns and no interceptions.
Adrian Peterson
Peterson burst onto the scene
in 2004, rushing for 1,925 yards as a freshman.
If he was an upperclassman, he might have won
the award. Last year, he had 1,108 yards, but
still managed to rush for 5 yards per carry.
Peterson’s chances
of winning this year decreased somewhat when quarterback,
Rhett Bomar was dismissed from the team. With
the dangerous Bomar behind center, opposing defenses
would not be able to key on Peterson nearly as
much. Another worrying factor is that the offensive
line of the Sooners only returns one starter.
Peterson is trying to become
the first Oklahoma running back to win the award
since Billy Sims in 1978. This past Saturday,
Peterson rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown
in a 24-17 win against UAB.
The Field
Quinn and Peterson are the
heavy favorites, but there are a number of others
to keep an eye out on. Ohio State quarterback,
Troy Smith didn’t throw for close the yardage
that Quinn did last year, but out-rushed him by
over 500 yards for 661 yards total. Smith also
led his team to a convincing Fiesta Bowl win over
Notre Dame.
Others to keep an eye out
on are Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm, Auburn
running back Kenny Irons, West Virginia running
back Steve Slaton and California running back
Marshawn Lynch. Slaton was a standout in Week
One with 203 yards rushing against Marshall.
