Sunday Notes I Scribbled
Down
There's been a flood of other
guys who weren't on the fantasy map, even as a late-round
backup pick, who all of a sudden put up huge numbers
and sending fantasy owners scrambling wildly to
fill such a huge hole in the lineup.
This week, Carolina's Nick Goings is the latest
to join the club. The Panthers actually had two
potential stud running backs to start the season
in veteran Stephen Davis and the rising Foster,
but both suffered season-ending injuries. That forced
them to shuffle through fullbacks, deep reserves
and castoffs like Brad Hoover, Joey Harris and Brandon
Bennett. But they finally hit paydirt with Goings,
who has had a couple of so-so starts with the Panthers
in his four-year career. He nearly doubled his 2004
total with his 121 yards, and it was only 76 yards
off his season-best total from 2001. Who knew he
had this in him?
Then again, who knew Reuben Droughns, Denver's
top fullback out of camp, would have five 100-yard
games this season? Or that Derrick Blaylock could
rush for four TDs in a game and approach 200 yards
in another? How about Minnesota's fourth-string
running back Mewelde Moore gaining 537 total yards
in just three weeks? Did you think former "sleeper"
picks like Jonathan Wells, Amos Zereoue and Anthony
Thomas would actually wake up, if just for a week?
It's nice if you can have a stud running back who
can stay consistently productive and healthy all
year, but even if you can't, just remember that
there's another big game lurking around the corner.
Week 11 Fantasy Football
Studs
1. Nick Goings, RB, Panthers (22 carries, 121
yards, 3 TDs; 3 catches, 21 yards): I guess we finally
have a starting back in Carolina. With Brad Hoover
out, Goings assumed the starting role and ran with
it in a big way, scoring three times. It took way
too long for the Panthers to figure out the replacement
for Stephen Davis and DeShaun Foster.
2. Edgerrin James, RB, Colts (23 carries, 204 yards,
1 TD; 1 catch, 11 yards): He's been running well
in recent weeks but never seemed to find the end
zone. Well, he topped himself and then some as Indy
ran the ball a little more in the second half after
racing out to a big lead.
3. Donovan McNabb, QB, Eagles (18-26, 222 yards,
4 TDs, 1 INT; 5 carries, 34 yards; 1 lost fumble):
He's heating up again after a couple of down games,
and he did it in crunch time for Philadelphia, firing
three TD passes in the second half, including two
to Brian Westbrook, who showed his receiving chops
again. And he put up those numbers despite completing
just two passes to Terrell Owens, although one was
a TD.
4. Peyton Manning, QB, Colts (17-28, 211 yards,
4 TDs, 1 INT; 1 carry, 5 yards): The same old, same
old big-TD game from Manning, who continues to be
on pace to shatter Dan Marino's TD record. What's
he going to do on the Thanksgiving stage against
the Lions?
5. Reuben Droughns, RB, Broncos (28 carries, 166
yards, 1 TD; 2 catches, 25 yards): This year's biggest
sleeper of them all continued his breakout season
against a porous Saints defense. Droughns has five
100-yard outings in his past six games.
6. Muhsin Muhammad, WR, Panthers (6 catches, 118
yards, 2 TDs; 1 carry, 13 yards): He's the hottest
receiver in the league right now, putting up 241
yards and five TDs the past two weeks. We'll see
if that continues against a desperate Bucs defense
next week.
7. Mark Campbell, TE, Bills (4 catches, 37 yards,
3 TDs): He more than doubled his TD output in one
game as he all of a sudden became the second coming
of Ben Coates, Drew Bledsoe's favorite tight end
target in New England.
8. Reggie Wayne, WR, Colts (6 catches, 106 yards,
2 TDs): Is he becoming the No. 1 guy ahead of Marvin
Harrison now? He has six TDs in his past four games.
9. Michael Pittman, RB, Buccaneers (21 carries,
106 yards, 2 TDs): He continues to reward fantasy
owners for waiting a few weeks to stick with him.
Pittman is definitely the man in Tampa Bay and scoring
touchdowns to prove that point.
10. LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, Chargers (37 carries,
164 yards, 1 TD; 1 catch, 9 yards): Seems like old
times for Tomlinson, who has a knack for running
over the Raiders. With Drew Brees emerging (not
to mention a nagging groin injury), Tomlinson's
carries had tailed off slightly, but this time he
got the bulk of the offense.
Other top performances: Michael Vick, QB, Falcons
(12-20, 115 yards, 2 TDs; 15 carries, 104 yards);
Brian Westbrook, RB, Eagles (12 carries, 63 yards;
5 catches, 42 yards, 2 TDs); Daunte Culpepper, QB,
Vikings (22-32, 233 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INTs; 11 carries,
35 yards); Donte' Stallworth, WR, Saints (10 catches,
122 yards, 1 TD); Drew Bledsoe, QB, Bills (15-24,
185 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT); Kyle Boller, QB, Ravens
(23-34, 232 yards, 2 TDs; 3 carries, 9 yards); Joe
Jurevicius, WR, Buccaneers (5 catches, 82 yards,
2 TDs); Brett Favre, QB, Packers (33-50, 383 yards,
1 TD, 2 INTs; 2 carries, 16 yards); Donald Driver,
WR, Packers (10 catches, 148 yards, 1 TD); Aaron
Brooks, QB, Saints (34-60, 377 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs;
1 carry, 7 yards); Shaun King, QB, Cardinals (28-52,
343 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs; 6 carries, 22 yards).
Duds
Marshall Faulk, RB, Rams (13 carries, 6 yards;
4 catches, 13 yards): Buffalo has a stout run defense,
but this is ridiculous for someone of Faulk's caliber.
Santana Moss, WR, Jets (2 catches, 25 yards): So
much for the revival not too long ago. Justin McCareins
(6 catches, 71 yards, 1 TD) made the big catches
for the Jets against the Browns.
Brandon Stokley, WR, Colts (1 catch, 7 yards):
Sometimes he'll have huge weeks, sometimes it'll
be like this. That's the problem of being a No.
3 receiver, even on a team like Indy.
Emmitt Smith, RB, Cardinals (11 carries, 26 yards):
The old man can't be big every week. Arizona was
down big early, forcing Shaun King to throw the
ball a lot (52 attempts).
Eddie George, RB, Cowboys (3 catches, 5 yards):
If you still had George in the starting lineup,
bench him now. Rookie Julius Jones made his first
NFL start, carrying the ball a whopping 30 times
for a not so impressive 81 yards against a solid
Ravens defense. Jones should be the man on Thanksgiving
against a Bears team that was torched for more than
200 yards by Edgerrin James.
Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins (17 carries, 37 yards;
1 catch, -4 yards): The offense never got going
with Patrick Ramsey under center, and shutting down
Portis was part of it.
Tim Rattay, QB, 49ers (15-31, 147 yards, 1 INT;
2 carries, 6 yards, 1 lost fumble): The Bucs defense
put the clamps down on the erratic Rattay. What's
worse is that key targets Eric Johnson, Brandon
Lloyd and Cedrick Wilson combined for three catches
and 24 yards.
Roy Williams, WR, Lions (2 catches, 19 yards):
It didn't help that Joey Harrington only passed
for 91 yards, but the rookie has tailed off badly
after a huge start to the season.
Jimmy Smith, WR, Jaguars (2 catches, 29 yards):
He's quietly had a solid fantasy season, but he
was just quiet on Sunday as David Garrard couldn't
match the same magic as last week.
Peerless Price, WR, Falcons (0 catches, 0 yards):
We know that Alge Crumpler is Michael Vick's favorite
target, but no catches for Price? Yikes.
Waiver Wire Wonders
Nick Goings, RB, Panthers
(22 carries, 121 yards, 3 TDs; 3 catches, 21 yards):
So much for Brad Hoover, Joey Harris, Jamal Robertson
and Brandon Bennett.
Antowain Smith, RB, Titans (24 carries, 95 yards,
1 TD): The veteran didn't miss a beat in stepping
in for the injured Chris Brown. He's at least a
good insurance policy for Brown down the stretch.
Eli Manning, QB, Giants (17-37, 162 yards, 1 TD,
2 INTs): He had an up-and-down debut, and was hurt
by some key drops by Jeremy Shockey. But there's
still some promise, although it's hard to recommend
him right now.
Now get back to work!!!
