NFL Football – The Furious
7 After Week 5

1. New England (5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS)
Even with Laurence Maroney nursing an injury,
the Patriots were able to happily hand the ball
off to Sammy Morris, who rumbled for 102 yards
on 21 carries. The Patriots became the fourth
team in history to win their first four games
with a margin of at least 17 points and Tom Brady
threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns against
a good secondary (again).
This team can do
everything and it’s almost
scary. They can pass with almost unnerving ease.
They can run the ball with anybody at tailback.
Meanwhile, their defense can stop both the run
and the pass. Next game: New England (-4) vs.
Dallas Cowboys
2. Indianapolis Colts (5-0 SU, 3-2 ATS)
The Colts held
the ball for 38:15 during their dismantling
of the vaunted Tampa Bay Bucs. Even if Michael
Pittman hadn’t been lost in
the second quarter, the Colts never gave the
Bucs a chance showing just how wide the gap between
the AFC and NFC really is. In fact, their punter
only came on to the field once, while Vinatieri
made good on his two chances.
If they can hold onto
the ball for that long against any team in the
NFL (including the Patriots), the NFL is in big
trouble. The scary thing about this is that they
did all this without five key starters, including
Marvin Harrison, Joseph Addai and Bob Sanders.
They have a bye week to lick their wounds. Next
game: BYE WEEK
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS)
Turns out that all that inside information the
Cardinals had on the Steelers was the difference
maker. Big Ben was efficient again as he posted
206 yards and a score. But the Steelers returned
to their ground dominance with Fast Willie gaining
102 yards on the ground and Najeh Davenport hustling
in two touchdowns on 58 yards.
But the big news for
Steel Town is that they shutout the Seattle Seahawks
21-0 without their top two receivers. The defense
was well rested, but mostly because the offense
was on the field for 40:45. The Steelers will
continue to benefit their NFL betting investors
with an offense that simply controls the game
and a defense that suffocates their opponents.
Next game: BYE WEEK
4. Dallas Cowboys (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS)
The Buffalo Bills
defense absolutely owned Tony Romo right up
until the final twenty seconds of the game.
And that’s all he needed.
Of course it didn’t help that the Bills
offense couldn’t score at all, but the
Cowboys were able to overcome six turnovers (all
by Romo).
The strange part
was Terrell Owens dark side began to brew on
the sidelines and he dropped several key passes
including a twenty yard bullet that would’ve
put the Cowboys on the Buffalo 25 with a second
on the clock. Owens better put his sulking
ways behind him because Moss and the Patriots
come to Dallas next week. Next game: New England
(-4) vs. Dallas Cowboys
5. Green Bay Packers (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS)
Can we talk about
Brett Favre’s disgusting
interception straight to Brian Urlacher? Why
does he get away with this stuff? It was the
turning point of the game! He could’ve
thrown the ball away. Instead he practically
gave it to the star player on the opposing team
on their own 19-yard line. Terrific. Glad he’s
having so much fun out there.
The Packers did
not need this. They did not need to give their
only divisional threat any momentum, nor give
themselves a kick in the face. But it’s
hard to overcome five turnovers (unless you’re
playing the Bills or the Falcons apparently).
Brett needs to get back to mistake-free football
because the Redskins defense only allows 268
total yards and ranks third overall on defense.
Next game: Washington vs. Green Bay (-3)
6. Tennessee Titans (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS)
The 20-13 score
doesn’t reflect how poorly
the Titans played, or how bad the Falcons actually
are. Deangelo Hall opened up the scoring with
a 56 yard fumble returned for a score in the
first quarter, but after that Joey Harrington
couldn’t get the Dirty Birds in to the
endzone.
The oddsmakers
assumptions of the Titans however, were spot
on. They had been underdogs, or tight favorites,
up until this point and we’re
a betting investors best friend heading in to
this game. Vince Young threw three costly picks
and the running game only managed 92 yards.
Their tilt against the
Bucs is a tough call because the Titans are one
more game away from being called a streaky team,
but the betting faithful of the Titans have every
reason to believe that the game against the Falcons
was nothing more than a hiccup. Next game: Tennessee
vs. Tampa Bay (-3)
7. San Diego Chargers (2-3 SU, 2-3 ATS)
I’m buying and I’m
buying hard. The Denver Broncos are a terrible
football team, but anytime a team can post
41 points and 484 yards on anybody is a big
deal. And they did it with LaDanian Tomlinson
being grounded to 67 yards and zero touchdowns.
There is a lot
to be said against Norv Turner, but it usually
takes a team a while to gel under a new head
coach. The Chiefs and Broncos are in the gutter,
so the Chargers can conceivably win this division
with a 9-7 or 10-6 record. Their only threat
is the Raiders – who
are 10.5 point underdogs. Who would you bet on
to win the AFC West? Exactly. Next game: Oakland
vs. San Diego (-10.5)
