Baltimore, MD (My
Sportsbook) - Matt Stover tied a career high
with five field goals and the Baltimore defense
forced six turnovers as the Ravens sent the
St. Louis Rams to their worst start in 45 years
with a 22-3 throttling at M&T
Bank Stadium. Kyle Boller was hardly spectacular
filling in for the injured Steve McNair, but
completed 18-of-30 passes for 184 yards and limited
his mistakes to just two turnovers. Willis McGahee
rushed 25 times for 61 yards and a touchdown,
and Derrick Mason caught five passes for 79 yards.
Baltimore (4-2) was powered by a ball-hawking
defensive unit that intercepted Rams quarterback
Gus Frerotte a franchise-record five times, forced
a fumble, and generally made life miserable for
the veteran signal- caller, who had been 6-1
in his past seven starts. Frerotte finished the
day 19-for-36 through the air for 208 yards,
but his six turnovers consistently provided the
Ravens with prime field position and scoring
opportunities. Travis Minor rushed seven times
for 40 yards, while Marques Hagans had five catches
for 74 yards to lead a depleted receiving corps
that got even thinner when Drew Bennett left
the game in the second quarter with a hamstring
injury. The Rams (0-6) equaled their worst start
since 1962, and will head to Seattle next Sunday
still seeking that icebreaking win.
Final Score: Minnesota 34, Chicago 31
Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - Ryan Longwell
booted a career-long 55-yard field goal as time
expired to lift Minnesota over Chicago, 34-31,
in a thriller at Soldier Field. Brian Griese
finished an improbable Bears (2-4) comeback moments
earlier when he found the dynamic Devin Hester
behind the Vikings defense for an 81-yard touchdown
pass with just 1:38 left in the game. But, the
Vikings' (2-3) Adrian Peterson, who ran for a
franchise-record 224 yards and three touchdowns
in the game, returned the ensuing kickoff 53
yards to the Chicago 38-yard line. The Vikings
offense was only able to gain one more yard but
that didn't matter to Longwell. The veteran kicker
stepped on the field and drilled the game-winner
just over the crossbar to stun the defending
NFC champions. Peterson, who amassed his yardage
on just 20 carries, broke the team record of
Chuck Foreman, who ran for 200 yards against
the Philadelphia Eagles on October 24, 1976.
Chester Taylor added 83 yards rushing on 22 carries
for the Vikings, who rushed for 311 yards in
the game and snapped a six-game skid against
the Bears in Illinois. Tarvaris Jackson completed
just 9-of-23 passes for 136 yards and a TD but
stayed away from the big turnover. Griese connected
on 26-of-45 passes for 381 yards with three touchdowns
and two interceptions for the Bears, who fell
into last place in the NFC North. Cedric Benson
had 67 yards rushing on 18 carries.
Final Score: Cleveland 41, Miami 31
Cleveland, OH (My Sportsbook) - Derek Anderson
threw three touchdown passes to Braylon Edwards,
lifting the Cleveland Browns to a 41-31 victory
over the winless Miami Dolphins. Anderson completed
18-of-25 passes for 245 yards and added a touchdown
on the ground for the Browns (3-3), who bounced
back from last week's setback at New England
and have yet to lose consecutive games this season.
Cleveland, which has a bye next week, was last
3-3 in 2004, but went on to lose nine straight
games before ending the season with a win to
finish 4-12. Edwards wound up with five catches
for 67 yards and tight end Kellen Winslow hauled
in five passes for 90 yards in the victory. Cleo
Lemon got his second NFL start at quarterback
for the Dolphins in place of the injured Trent
Green, who sustained a major concussion last
week against Houston. Lemon, who also started
the regular-season finale last year against Indianapolis,
completed 24-of-43 passes for 256 yards with
two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also
ran for a pair of scores, as Miami tried to make
a game of it in the third quarter after falling
behind by as many as 21 points. Ronnie Brown
had another banner day in defeat. He ran for
101 yards on 19 carries to notch his fourth straight
100-yard game and also caught nine passes for
69 yards. The Dolphins (0-6), however, matched
a team record for worst start to a season and
set a club record with their ninth consecutive
loss dating back to last year. The 2004 squad
also went 0-6 on the way to a dismal 4-12 mark.
It doesn't get any easier, as Miami hosts New
England next week.
Final Score: Green Bay 17, Washington 14
Green Bay, WI (My Sportsbook) - Charles Woodson's
57-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the
third quarter put Green Bay in front and the
Packers held on for a 17-14 victory over the
Washington Redskins at Lambeau Field. Brett Favre
completed 19-of-37 passes for 188 yards with
two interceptions for the Packers (5-1), who
rebounded from their first loss of the season
last week against Chicago. Favre's first interception
of the game in the third quarter was the 278th
of his career, moving him past George Blanda
for most all-time in league history. DeShawn
Wynn rushed for 37 yards and a touchdown in the
victory, while Donald Lee had 75 yards receiving
on just three catches. Jason Campbell threw for
217 yards on 21-of-37 passing with a touchdown
and interception for the Redskins (3-2), who
have two losses over their last three games.
Chris Cooley caught nine passes for a career-high
105 yards and a touchdown, while Clinton Portis
had 64 yards on the ground with a fumble in defeat.
Final Score: Jacksonville 37, Houston 17
Jacksonville, FL (My Sportsbook) - David Garrard
threw two touchdown passes and Maurice Jones-Drew
finished with 184 yards from scrimmage as the
Jacksonville Jaguars routed the Houston Texans,
37-17, at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Jones-Drew
did the majority of his damage on the ground,
rushing for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 12
carries. He also caught four passes for a team-high
59 yards. Garrard went 22-of-34 for 221 yards
for Jacksonville (4-1), which has won four in
a row since a 13-10 season-opening loss to Tennessee.
Matt Schaub finished 19-of-31 for 259 yards and
Kevin Walter caught 12 passes for 160 yards for
Houston (2-4), which has lost three of its last
four. The Jags defense again stood strong against
the run, limiting the Texans to 61 yards. Jacksonville,
which gave up 282 yards rushing in the season-opener
against the Titans, has not allowed more than
61 yards rushing in any of its last four games.
Final Score: Kansas City 27, Cincinnati 20
Kansas City, MO (My Sportsbook) - Tony Gonzalez
caught nine passes for 102 yards with two touchdowns
and Larry Johnson rushed for 119 yards and another
score as the Kansas City Chiefs held on to defeat
the Cincinnati Bengals, 27-20, at Arrowhead Stadium.
Gonzalez's first touchdown of the contest in
the late stages of the first quarter was his
63rd career receiving score, which surpassed
Shannon Sharpe for most by a tight end in NFL
history. Damon Huard finished 25-of-35 passing
for 264 yards with two touchdowns for Kansas
City (3-3), which rebounded from a 17-7 loss
to Jacksonville last week. The Chiefs have won
three of their last four contests. Jeff Webb
grabbed seven passes for 78 yards and Jared Allen
chipped in with 2 1/2 sacks for KC. Carson Palmer
was 26-of-43 passing for 320 yards with two touchdowns
and a pair of interceptions for the Bengals (1-4),
who have dropped four in a row since beating
Baltimore in the first game of the season. T.J.
Houshmandzadeh pulled in eight passes for 145
yards and two touchdowns, while Chad Johnson
had eight grabs for 83 yards. Kenny Watson, making
his first start for the Bengals in place of an
injured Rudi Johnson, rushed for 68 yards on
13 carries.
Final Score: Philadelphia 16, NY Jets 9
East Rutherford, NJ (My Sportsbook) - Donovan
McNabb threw for 278 yards and the Eagles defense
came up huge in the fourth quarter as Philadelphia
hung on to beat the New York Jets, 16-9. McNabb
finished 22-of-35 with a touchdown and an interception,
and the Eagles (2-3) were bolstered by the return
of several key players, including Brian Westbrook.
The versatile back, who missed the last game
with an abdominal injury, carried 20 times for
120 yards. Kevin Curtis led all receivers with
five catches for 121 yards and a TD as the Eagles
improved to 8-0 all-time versus the Jets. David
Akers also converted on a pair of critical field
goals in the second half after missing a pair
early on. He ended 3-for-5, making him just 8-of-16
on field goal attempts lifetime at Giants Stadium.
Chad Pennington logged another forgetful performance
for the Jets (1-5), completing just 11-of-21
passes for 128 yards. He failed to throw a touchdown
pass and was intercepted once. Thomas Jones ran
for 130 yards on 24 carries, while Mike Nugent
kicked three field goals for New York.
Final Score: Tampa Bay 13, Tennessee 10
Tampa, FL (My Sportsbook) - Matt Bryant's 43-yard
field goal with 11 seconds remaining lifted Tampa
Bay past Tennessee, 13-10, at Raymond James Stadium.
The Titans (3-2), who were hampered by the loss
of star quarterback Vince Young with a right
quadriceps injury in the third quarter, tied
the game moments earlier when LenDale White capped
an 86-yard, 13-play drive by plunging in from
two yards out with 1:17 to go. But, Jeff Garcia
calmly led the Buccaneers (4-2) down the field
for Bryant's game-winner. The veteran found Joey
Galloway for a 14-yard gain to the Tennessee
35-yard line with 22 seconds left, and followed
that by slipping the ball to Ike Hilliard on
the right side for a 10-yard gain. Bryant then
trotted onto the field and nailed the field goal
for the win. Garcia completed 20-of-31 passes
for 274 yards and a touchdown for the Buccaneers,
who beat Tennessee for just the second time in
franchise history. Galloway caught four passes
for 97 yards and a touchdown while Hilliard added
four receptions for 59 yards. Young was 11-of-14
for 120 yards and an interception before leaving
for the Titans, who lost for the first time in
12 tries against NFC South opponents. Backup
Kerry Collins replaced Young and went 10-of-20
for 125 yards. White chipped in with 64 yards
rushing and the touchdown on 25 carries, and
Eric Moulds caught six balls for 49 yards.
Final Score: Carolina 25, Arizona 10
Glendale, AZ (My Sportsbook) - Vinny Testaverde
completed 20-of-33 passes for 206 yards and the
go-ahead touchdown in his first start of the
season as the Carolina Panthers came from behind
to knock off the Arizona Cardinals, 25-10, at
University of Phoenix Stadium. Testaverde, signed
just this week as an emergency fill-in for injured
QBs Jake Delhomme and David Carr, did not turn
the ball over and sufficiently managed the game
while getting a lot of support from the backfield
of DeAngelo Williams and DeShaun Foster. Williams
carried just 10 times, but racked up 121 yards
and the backbreaking touchdown, while Foster
rushed 17 times for 43 yards. Steve Smith had
10 catches for 136 yards and the difference-making
touchdown as the Panthers (4-2) beat Arizona
for the fourth consecutive time. Carolina kept
pace with Tampa Bay for first place in the NFC
South heading into its bye week. Tim Rattay -
also a mid-week signing - completed just 12 of
his 24 pass attempts and was intercepted three
times in relief of Cardinals starter Kurt Warner,
who left in the first quarter with a sprained
elbow after taking a hit from Panthers defensive
end Julius Peppers and fumbling. Edgerrin James
carried 22 times for 80 yards and the lone Cardinals
touchdown, while Larry Fitzgerald had six catches
for 97 yards. Arizona (3-3) had a two- game win
streak halted, and will head to Washington next
Sunday to take on the Redskins.
Final Score: New England 48, Dallas 27
Irving, TX (My Sportsbook) - Tom Brady threw
for a career-high five touchdowns to keep New
England undefeated with a 48-27 victory over
Dallas in a highly-anticipated matchup at Texas
Stadium. Brady, who completed 31- of-46 passes
for 388 yards, became the first quarterback in
NFL history to throw at least three touchdowns
in each of the first six games of a season. Wes
Welker hauled in 11 passes for a career-high
124 yards with a pair of touchdowns for the Patriots
(6-0), who are unbeaten after six games for the
first time since 2004. Donte' Stallworth grabbed
seven passes for 136 yards and score while Randy
Moss had six catches for 59 yards and a touchdown
in the aerial attack for New England, which racked
up 448 yards of total offense. The victory also
marked the first for the Patriots in team history
against the Cowboys in Dallas. Tony Romo threw
for 199 yards with two touchdowns and an interception
on 18-of-29 passing for the Cowboys (5-1), who
were handed their first loss of the season and
were looking to start the campaign 6-0 for the
first time since 1983. Terrell Owens finished
with 66 yards and a touchdown on six catches
in the loss.
Final Score: San Diego 28, Oakland 14
San Diego, CA (My Sportsbook) - LaDainian Tomlinson
had four rushing touchdowns as the San Diego
Chargers defeated the Oakland Raiders, 28-14,
at Qualcomm Stadium. Tomlinson, who had just
329 yards and two touchdowns on the season coming
into the game, totaled 198 yards on 24 carries
for the Chargers (3-3), who have won their last
two games after dropping three straight. With
the four rushing touchdowns, Tomlinson now has
106 on the ground and moved past John Riggins
for fifth all-time in that category. Also, Tomlinson
moved past Riggins for 10th all-time in overall
touchdowns with 118. In 13 career games against
the Raiders, Tomlinson has 1,653 yards on the
ground. Philip Rivers went 14-for-21 with 156
yards and an interception while Antonio Gates
had three catches for 58 yards for San Diego,
which has won its last eight games against Oakland.
Daunte Culpepper went 24-for-37 with 230 yards
and a touchdown and two interceptions while Ronald
Curry had six catches for 73 yards for the Raiders
(2-3), who had a two-game winning streak stopped.
Final Score: New Orleans 28, Seattle 17
Seattle, WA (My Sportsbook) - Drew Brees and
the Saints offense awoke from their season-long
slumber, as Brees completed 25-of-36 passes for
246 yards and two scores, and New Orleans earned
it's first win, 28-17, over the Seattle Seahawks.
David Patten gained 113 yards on eight catches,
and Reggie Bush rushed for 97 yards on 19 carries
and added 44 yards on six catches for the Saints
(1-4). Josh Bullocks blocked a field goal and
picked off a Matt Hasselbeck pass for New Orleans,
which also scored on a fumbled punt snap by Seattle
that Pierre Thomas recovered and ran into the
end zone. Hasselbeck completed 26-of-43 passes
for 362 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception
for Seattle (3-3), which has dropped two in a
row. Shaun Alexander gained only 35 yards on
14 carries for the Seahawks, who got 120 yards
receiving on nine grabs by Bobby Engram.
